A Good Story, Polish Spirit and Kashmir Lilies

1   No photo for this but a heart warming story for you.  The 19 year old son of one of our choir members has been travelling in Europe and lost his iPhone when in Berlin.  His mother received a call from a Turkish man, also travelling, saying, ‘ I am ringing the number of Mum to tell you I have found a phone.’ He explained that he was leaving Berlin the next day but could arrange to meet the son that evening. His Mum had no way to contact him so this couldn’t happen.  The lovely Turkish man asked for the UK address, took the phone home with him and then posted it to England! Now, isn’t that a beautiful thing?

2   As P has left for Poland I have collected a Clematis that we had on order for my purple, white and green garden and the lovely Mr S has planted it this afternoon. It is called Polish Spirit.

3   The Kashmir Lilies in the garden are in bloom and there should be flowers throughout the Autumn and into Winter. They are very beautiful.

If you have read any of yesterday’s comments, you’ll see I was admonished for my portrayal of a Cornish Cream Tea! The cream goes on top of the jam in Cornwall; the other way is done in Devon! My excuse is that the freezer jam had gone very runny and the cream wouldn’t stay on top so I did it this way. Here is the proper thing and I hope I am forgiven!

A scone done the proper Cornish way!

Please forgive too me for not having visited fellow bloggers much recently. As you know we’ve been busy with family and tomorrow we go to visit D&A in Barcelona. I’ll try to post each day and will be back soon to visit you all!  🙂

Windy Day, Cornish Cream Tea on the Cliffs and A Meal Out

1. Delightful walk along the beach at Perranporth, lots of windsurfers and hangliders and one little chap with his Dad flying a kite.

2. On to Chapelporth for a cream tea. It’s P’s last day and he hasn’t had a cream tea yet so I made scones this morning and packed up a picnic of scones, strawberry freezer jam and Rodda’s Clotted Cream. We bought our teas from the cafe and took our goodies up the cliff walk.

3. P is taking us out for a special meal tonight as a thank you for his ‘brilliant’ stay with us.

Barbara Hepworth, Graffiti Grannies and Driftwood Dragon

1   St Ives was our destination today, by train along one of the most beautiful coastlines. St Ives itself is very beautiful and one of the highlights for me is always our visit to the Barbara Hepworth Studio and Garden.

From the train from Lelant to St Ives, one of the best train rides ever

2   By the time we went back along to catch the train home, some Graffiti Grannies had been busy yarn bombing the rails!

3   Two sculptures for you, one, on St Ives railway station by David Kemp who made the Tinners Hounds in Redruth town centre and this driftwood one which I’ve posted before but in case you missed it, here it is again, St George and the Dragon. I love it!

I just want to show you this extra photo from yesterday which delighted me. It was taken near the Lizard Lighthouse.

Bird on a bramble

If you have read this far, a question for you….  I’ve decided I don’t really like the Gallery way of presenting a series of photos as they cannot be enlarged as much to see detail. What do you think?

One from yesterday that I don’t think was served well by putting it into a Gallery.

The Lizard, Ann’s Pasties and Kynance Cove

We’ve had another day of showing P some more of Cornwall’s treasures. I’m going to tell the story and show you all the beautiful things of the day through a Gallery. Just click on any photo and it will enlarge and you can move on to the next one.

The day was rounded off with choir practice and learning a beautiful Lebanese song from a Lebanese friend of Claire’s who is visiting Cornwall.

Different Birthdays for Twins, Fuchsia with Bee and Vegetable Ring

1   Our twins were born 35 years ago, Daniel on 16th September and Lucy on 17th September. It was always my plan that they should have their own birthdays and I managed it! Daniel arrived a few minutes before midnight on his Great Granny’s birthday which delighted me and my Mum; Lucy just nine minutes later.   We Skyped this morning with Daniel and Ami in Barcelona to sing Happy Birthday!

2   The fuchsias in the garden are really beautiful just now. I sent this photo to Ami as she loves the colour (as you will have seen from her Wedding dress if you’ve been following long) If you would like to see photos of the wedding in Senegal and the very beautiful Ami in her fuchsia wedding dress, have a look here

3   We have been eating vegetarian meals since P arrived for his holiday. Tonight I made the Vegetable Ring as on my Recipe page. I added fried onions to the mixture as I said I would but it made the mixture rather damp and it splatted in the baking. It tasted even better though!

When I sent the photo of our supper to Ami, she asked that I teach her how to make it when we visit them in Barcelona next weekend. It will be my pleasure! I hope I’ll learn how to make Lakh, a Senegalese dish we enjoyed when in Dakar for the wedding.

St Just to St Mawes, Blackberry Dessert and Driftwood

1   Over the King Harry Ferry to St Just and then a five mile walk along the coastal path to St Mawes, again showing Cornwall off to P.

There had been a recent wedding in St Just Church

2   The best dessert in the world has to be blackberries warmed by the sun and straight from the hedgerows.

Warm blackberries

And while I was picking blackberries I spotted this spider very busily spinning her web.

3   On the small stretch of beach that you can walk along on this walk we found lots of fantastical driftwood and this delightful resting place!

White Glow, Winter Coat and “You can shed tears..”

1   I love the white flowers in our garden at this time of year as the sunlight is lower and they gain a kind of glow which is very beautiful.

White Borage, Blue Sky

Sweet Pea

Dahlia

Viburnum

2   The nights are becoming noticeably colder and one of ‘our’ beautiful horses has been given his winter coat already.

3   This very beautiful poem by David Harkins, poet and painter, was read at Monday’s funeral for a very special lady. We both found the words very touching.

“You can shed tears that she is gone,
or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back,
or you can open your eyes and see all she’s left.
Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her,
or you can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her only that she is gone,
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind,
be empty and turn your back.
Or you can do what she’d want:
smile, open your eyes, love and go on.”

It’s a poem I shall be putting into my ‘When I’ve gone’ drawer.

Just a little extra – Linda identified yesterday’s flower for me. Thank you so much. Fascinating info to be found here   http://www.strangewonderfulthings.com/181.htm

Near and Far, Startling Beauty and Falmouth Art Gallery

1  After a super singing session, I met Mr S and P and we went to Falmouth, quite delightful in the sunshine.

Near and Far – from Pendennis Point over to St Mawes

2   Near Gylly Beach are these amazing flowers! I have never seen anything like them and don’t know what they are. Does anyone?

Whatever is this beautiful flower?

Lots of them

3   The Art Gallery in Falmouth is free and houses one of my favourite paintings –

Study for The Lady of Shalott by John William Waterhouse 1894

The gallery hosts lots of workshops for children and families. The resulting paintings are professionally framed and hung which absolutely delights me – respect for all art whoever has created it.

The Land’s End Cat, Macbeth at The Minack and A Patch of Blue Sky

1    We did the touristy thing today and showed P, my BIL from Poland, just a few of Cornwall’s treasures. We started at  Land’s End.

Near and Far – Land’s End with America across the water!

Beautiful Lichen at Land’s End

On our way to Porthcurno and The Minack Theatre, an amazing amphitheatre cut into the cliffs, we went through a little village with this sign at each end.

Take care – deaf cat in this village

2    There was a production of Macbeth going on so we could only watch from the top. What a magnificent backdrop for any play!

Macbeth at The Minack

Just on the other side of the theatre is the beach of Porthcurno which must be one of the most beautiful and unspoiled anywhere.

3 Our next stop was the best ice-creams ever at Mount’s Bay overlooking St Michael’s Mount. On a day that had been mostly grey weather-wise (but lots of fun) this patch of blue sky appeared – magic!

Near and Far, Signs of Autumn and Fabulous Fabrics

1  Sweet smelling mustard seed flowers in the foreground, our house in the middle and The Atlantic Ocean, just visible along the horizon. You’ll probably have to click to enlarge to see it as it was rather a grey day.
