Poem, Cream Tea, Sign and Flower Paints

A beautiful poem came my way today and in these days of terrible stories of how refugees are being treated around the world, gives us all pause for thought.  It is Red Brocade by Naomi Shihab Nye, 1952. I have shown others of her poems here and have loved each one of hers that I have read.  Thanks, P.

The Arabs used to say,
When a stranger appears at your door,
feed him for three days
before asking who he is,
where he’s come from,
where he’s headed.
That way, he’ll have strength
enough to answer.
Or, by then you’ll be
such good friends
you don’t care.

Let’s go back to that.
Rice? Pine nuts?
Here, take the red brocade pillow.
My child will serve water
to your horse.

No, I was not busy when you came!
I was not preparing to be busy.
That’s the armor everyone put on
to pretend they had a purpose
in the world.

I refuse to be claimed.
Your plate is waiting.
We will snip fresh mint
into your tea.

We took Cornish Cream Tea to our German family who are staying in Porthtowan this afternoon. It was the first time the children had had such a treat and they loved it – splits, homemade Strawberry Freezer jam and Cornish clotted cream!

This delightful sign was on the beach today. Thanks, S, for the photo.Sign on Porthtowan Beach

LiveWire No 4 came home with us for tea and bedtime to give her Mum a break. Before tea, she helped me with the deadheading, loving to collect all the colours together. She then started to add their colours to her drawing and we were all delighted with the resultant colours.

Flowers, Family and Lemon Drizzle Cake

1    We went to visit friends this morning and I made up a little bunch of garden flowers for them.

2     Our niece who lives in Munich is in Cornwall  with her family and they came this afternoon for a Cornish Cream Tea. It went down extremely well!

A Lurcher, A Woodland Walk and Sea Views

1    Friends have recently adopted a wonderful dog whose owner is off to Australia so couldn’t keep him. He’s a Lurcher and is one of the sweetest and best behaved dogs I have ever met. I’m not really a dog lover, having been seriously frightened as a child, but Duke is just delightful!

2    Our friends have a delightful cottage just by Tehidy Woods and we spent a lovely sunny afternoon walking and talking our way through the woods up to the coast and round again. Click on any photo for an enlargement.

3   The sea was many beautiful hues of blue in the sunshine.

All in all, it was a beautiful day in every way: sunshine, wonderful natural beauty, exercise and being with good friends – what more could one ask? And, I almost forgot, a delicious Cornish cream tea before our walk and a fabulous meal afterwards!

A Good Story, Polish Spirit and Kashmir Lilies

1   No photo for this but a heart warming story for you.  The 19 year old son of one of our choir members has been travelling in Europe and lost his iPhone when in Berlin.  His mother received a call from a Turkish man, also travelling, saying, ‘ I am ringing the number of Mum to tell you I have found a phone.’ He explained that he was leaving Berlin the next day but could arrange to meet the son that evening. His Mum had no way to contact him so this couldn’t happen.  The lovely Turkish man asked for the UK address, took the phone home with him and then posted it to England! Now, isn’t that a beautiful thing?

2   As P has left for Poland I have collected a Clematis that we had on order for my purple, white and green garden and the lovely Mr S has planted it this afternoon. It is called Polish Spirit.

3   The Kashmir Lilies in the garden are in bloom and there should be flowers throughout the Autumn and into Winter. They are very beautiful.

If you have read any of yesterday’s comments, you’ll see I was admonished for my portrayal of a Cornish Cream Tea! The cream goes on top of the jam in Cornwall; the other way is done in Devon! My excuse is that the freezer jam had gone very runny and the cream wouldn’t stay on top so I did it this way. Here is the proper thing and I hope I am forgiven!

A scone done the proper Cornish way!

Please forgive too me for not having visited fellow bloggers much recently. As you know we’ve been busy with family and tomorrow we go to visit D&A in Barcelona. I’ll try to post each day and will be back soon to visit you all!  🙂
