Purple, White and Green

1   I had occasion to wear my Suffragette scarf today to honour an old friend. When I wear it, it’s also in honour of my Great Granny.

2   I mentioned last week the Suffragette garden I’m planting. Here is the purple clematis, The President, which has only one flower at the moment. Purple was chosen by the Suffagette Movement to represent dignity.

3   We have the white and the green in the Japanese Anenome, particularly beautiful this evening in the dusky light. White stood for purity and green for hope.

Migrating Geese, Godrevy and Another Simple Supper

1   We took P, my brother-in-law, to the car-boot sale this morning and I found the next size up, but still very small and delightful, wet-suit for Jake but the highlight of our morning was the flocks of migrating geese, dozens of them, honking their way overhead. This is but a few of those who flew by.

2    After the boot sale we went along the coast at Godrevy, blown to bits by a crazy warm wind and came back feeling exhilarated and exhausted by the effort of battling the wind!

We did heed the warnings!

3   Made a fabulously delicious simple supper of Leek Risotto with Chestnuts!

Leek and Chestnut Risotto

I’ll put the recipe up if anyone fancies it – truly scrumptious!

Just been watching the closing ceremony of the Paralympics and want to say how inspirational the athletes are. I hate, though, the hypocrisy of our politicians who at one moment praise the athletes and in another make polices that result in hurting so many of our disabled people.

Cricket, Crinodendron and Creativity

Redruth Cricket Club

1   My Brother-in-law, who lives in Warsaw, is staying with us for a couple of weeks and had a wish to see an English Cricket match. We were lucky that the last match of the season was being played at home on the Cricket ground only minutes away from us. It was very relaxing watching the slow progress and pleasing to catch some of the action.

2   On the way home is a whole hedge of the beautiful Crinodendron Hookerianum. Our little bush is doing well but is still only a year old.   Crinodendron Hookerianum is a fascinating shrub that has on it buds, flowers and seed pods at all stages all at once.

Three Haiku – Raindrops, Mist and Onions

I have a number of blogging friends who write very pleasing poetry, some serious, some funny and some haiku. I thought I’d have fun with haiku today so here goes.

Rainbow raindrops, taken very early in the morning and I don’t know how I did it!

Rainbows in raindrops,

a magic misty morning,

Autumnal delights.

Early morning mist and horses, taken at the same time of day

Mist in the morning,

Two inquisitive horses,

One oblivious.

Onions and shallots

Our onions and shallots,

Golden and grown by us,

Plaited together.

These are for you, LouAnn and Meme and Brian and, of course, all my lovely readers, followers, likers and commenters – all really appreciated – thank you!

Brimstone Moth, Choir Babies and Purple Passion

1   I found a beautiful yellow moth on the bedroom door frame this morning. It seems it is a Brimstone Moth Opisthograptis Luteolata.

2   The Choir-babies were a delight this morning, beginning to take an interest in each  other. T loved the bubbles!

3    I called into the Nursery on the way home looking for a purple clematis in flower now to add to our Suffragette Garden which is nearly planted up. I didn’t find one but did find this amazingly beautiful Purple Passion Flower.

Family Heirloom, Weddings and Something Borrowed

1   The Weekly Writing Challenge this week is too good for me to pass up! It requires us to write about our favourite things and since every day, I write about beautiful things, today I’m also writing about one of my very special and favourite things The Family Locket.   This has been in the family, on my Mother’s side for at least 152 years and is now entrusted to my care.

My Great Granny’s Locket

We know very little about my Great Grandmother apart from the fact that she was Spanish and we think the locket probably is too. The front of the locket is particularly beautiful, the silver being inlaid with a black stone, maybe jet.The back is covered in very delicate engraving. My Mum attributed the fact that her hair never went grey to her Spanish genes!

The front of the locket

Inside the locket are two tiny photographs, one of my Great Grandmother and the other of my Great Grandfather, the only photo we have of him.

Inside the locket

My Spanish Great Grandmother and her Husband

In the photograph, taken we assume sometime around 1860, she is wearing the locket and just look at his wonderful moustache!  We treasure her studio portrait in its original card frame.

2    I am told that my Granny, whom I knew well – she taught me to knit, to crochet and to play cards, but never on a Sunday! – wore the locket at her wedding on 27th April 1882 but I don’t have a photograph of that wedding.  I do have a photograph of Granny and sometimes, when I pass a mirror, I fleetingly catch her image. I remember her as always smiling and I’m told I do that too!

My Granny

My Mum, married on 2nd September 1939, by her Father, The Very Reverend William Richards, the day before the Second World War was declared, wore the locket at her wedding but their honeymoon, planned to be in Paris, was a few snatched days in Blackpool instead.   The photo isn’t very clear but the chain and shape can just be made out in this photo.

I, too, wore the locket at my wedding in Truro, Cornwall almost 30 years later in 1967.

I wore it at our Wedding August 1967

KJ, our second daughter, wore the locket at her wedding in London July 2006.

Our daughter, KJ wore it for her Wedding 2006

KJ also has Granny’s grin!

3    When my Brother and Sister-in-law were married in June 1993 in the Chapel at Truro School, the locket was V’s borrowed and old item. I know from the wedding in Senegal that not everyone knows the saying – ‘Something old, something new, Something borrowed, something blue’ to bring good luck to the newly wedded couple.

There is something very special about being able to lend such a precious item to someone you love. My Mum had died only three weeks before the wedding so this is a particularly poignant memory. She would have been so pleased that the locket was there again, at another family wedding and welcoming another daughter into the family.

My Brother, my Sister-in-law and my Dad

So, my three beautiful things today are all linked and all depend on the very precious and very beautiful Family Locket.

Cornish Mists, Precious Books and Pressed Flowers

1   We are promised four days of Summer starting tomorrow but today is a typical Autumn day, full  “of mists and mellow fruitfulness”  (From John Keats’ poem, To Autumn, 1820:)

Mist droplets on a web

Horses in the mist and a rabbit running away

2   I spent this damp day doing more sorting. If you’ve been following long, you’ll know that constant but gradual ‘de-cluttering’ of things I inherited is happening at our house!  Today it was a bookshelf where I found some beautiful books which have gone straight back onto the shelves! Just look at these…..

The Fern World, published 1877.

Just look at that beautiful lettering!

I travelled on some of those branch lines, pre Beeching.

I’m saving another treasure for another day. It is so lovely to handle these books knowing they were also loved by my Mum and Dad.

3   Pressed in a Diary and long forgotten, I discovered some beautiful pressed flowers. I picked all these in our garden the day we moved back to Cornwall mid January 2008. I am thrilled by the retention of colour in the primrose, the crocus, the snowdrop, the tiny blue flower and the greenery.

Snail, Elephant and Megruli Nana

1   Somehow a snail found his way into our sun room. I love the little white dashes on his neck but was concerned to see that his shell seems to be cracked. I helped him out into the back field.

Visiting snail

2   My beloved wooden elephant got a polish today. I fell for him many years ago in a flea market, paid rather too much for him and had to go home to fetch Mr S to carry him home as he’s far too heavy for me.

3   The school where we normally meet for choir being closed, we met in Treslothnan Church and had a brilliant sing. The acoustics are lovely. The beautiful thing was one piece especially that we are learning, Megruli Nana, a lullaby from Samagreto, West Georgia and it is absolutely stunning. Listen to this version I have found on Youtube…..Megruli nana  It will be brilliant when we’ve finished learning it.

Guest Post, Horses Having Fun and Raindrops

1   I am thrilled today to have had my Guest Post published on Choc Chip Uru’s blog. I have also posted the recipe for Chocolate Amaretti Torte, which is delicious, on my recipe pages too.

2   The horses were having fun rolling around this morning before the rain started.

Hic Bibitur, Fabrics and Skype to Barcelona

1    I walked past this house sign in Penryn and was glad of my schooldays’ Latin! Hic Bibitur – Here they drink! The owner came by as I was taking the photo and asked if I knew what it meant, saying it was a most appropriate name as the house is rented out to students!

I love this!

2    I was in my favourite shop this afternoon, buying buttons for the little hoodies that I’ve nearly finished knitting (they are taking forever!) and took photos of these beautiful fabrics.

3   Daniel and Ami called from Barcelona and we Skyped for ages. They are so blissfully happy!

And I am delighted to tell you that my Guest Post for Choc Chip Uru has been posted today. Please check it out here              http://gobakeyourself.wordpress.com/2012/09/01/guest-post-3-chocolate-amaretti-torte/
