Snowfall, Snowdrops and Thaw (Look Beyond – Weekly Photo Challenge)

First snow

First snow in the garden and in the fields beyond

1   We have snow. Our bit of Cornwall has had a beautiful light dusting of snow, just enough to make footprints in and to create that magical hush that descends with the snowflakes.

2   A walk around the garden gave us the lovely snowdrops in the snow and some delightful bird footprints.

Sunshine, Ice, Green Stuffs and Beyond (Weekly Photo Challenge)

1    There was sunshine for a while today and it made a reflection of our little Bluebird glass etching. I had to be quick! When I tried to take a second photo it had disappeared.

2    We had a brief walk along The Great Flat Lode and the lovely Mr S spotted these icicles made of sap! The tree had been severely cut back and was weeping and its tears had frozen into beautiful icicles.

There were some lovely patterns in the puddles too.

3    So much green stuff is flourishing despite the freezing temperatures – mosses, lichen, gorse…

Winter Walk Around Trelissick Gardens, Cook Books and A Gig

1   We thought of driving up to England to see the snow but decided instead to walk around Trelissick Gardens. The gallery which follows takes you on our walk. Click on any image to get a full screen photo.

2   I’ve been looking at my collection of Ambrose Heath cook books inherited from my Mum and with recipes that we still use. (See the Rhubarb one on my Recipe pages)  Some of the books are illustrated with delightfully quirky Edward Borden woodcuts.

3   We’re off out tonight to a gig by The Old Tire Swingers. We’re told they are “another great bluegress act all the way from the U S of A Influenced by the Appalachian string bands as well as their own Central California country roots, they play a style that’s somewhere between old time, bluegrass, and country.”

Piano Tricks, Just So Science and Beyond the Agapanthus (Weekly Photo Challenge)

1   I loved my piano lesson today! Between us, my teacher and I have come up with a trick that is really helping me to learn. G started me on some simple duets and they were fun in the lessons but hard to practise as my part sounded odd on its own so I started to record her part and to play along to it. Hey presto! My timing improved and things sounded good!  So, now I record G playing each new piece three times, firstly at the right speed so I know what I’m aiming for, then each hand at a learning speed so I can pick it up, getting the timing and the notes right.    Then I can play each hand, with the recording playing the other hand, then I can move to both hands together and then play along with the right speed and, finally, I hope, play the whole thing independently! They are all simple tunes but I am having such fun learning!

2   BBC Radio 4 has all week had a fabulous series running called Just So Science. It is excerpts from Rudyard Kipling’s delightful ‘Just So Stories’ interspersed with scientific information about the animal in question. Today it was ‘The Cat Who Walked By Himself’, one of my many favourites. Just read this and feel the beautiful language, the alliteration, the rhythm, the repetition and the humour. I just love it. My Dad used to read all these stories to me so I hear his voice when I read the words. Now that is truly beautiful.

“One evening Bat said, ‘There is a Baby in the Cave. He is new and pink and fat and small, and the Woman is very fond of him.’

‘Ah,’ said the Cat, listening, ‘but what is the Baby fond of?’

‘He is fond of things that are soft and tickle,’ said the Bat. ‘He is fond of warm things to hold in his arms when he goes to sleep. He is fond of being played with. He is fond of all those things.’

‘Ah,’ said the Cat, listening, ‘then my time has come.’

Next night Cat walked through the Wet Wild Woods and hid very near the Cave till morning-time, and Man and Dog and Horse went hunting. The Woman was busy cooking that morning, and the Baby cried and interrupted. So she carried him outside the Cave and gave him a handful of pebbles to play with. But still the Baby cried.

Then the Cat put out his paddy paw and patted the Baby on the cheek, and it cooed; and the Cat rubbed against its fat knees and tickled it under its fat chin with his tail. And the Baby laughed; and the Woman heard him and smiled.”

3     Don wrote about Agapanthus recently and reminded me of this beautiful picture taken in St Mawes last July when we had our brilliant family reunion. Look beyond the Agapanthus to see the St Mawes Regatta on the water and beyond that to St Anthony Head which is on our favourite coastal walk.

Waterbirds, Comfort Food and A Present

1    After choir, I was catching a quiet moment by the side of the river when I saw a fat, gingery looking bird with enormous webbed feet perched on a rusty buoy.  Though it had something of the Cormorant about it, I didn’t really recognise it and only discovered that it was a very young Cormorant when I checked it online.

2    There are times when only comfort food will do! My CF of choice this lunchtime was Semolina with Jam, proper nursery food and made in a moment and with Strawberry Freezer Jam at the ready in the freezer.  I was enchanted by the ice-crystals on the jam so had to wait to have my pudding until I had taken this photo!

3    Our Christmas present arrived form America this afternoon having had some contretemps with the Customs Office for some unfathomable reason. It is a beautiful bread basket with a clay insert which you heat in the oven and then it keeps the bread warm as long as necessary. It is both beautiful and useful thus satisfying the words of  William Morris –

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”.

3     I was inspired by Yvonne to show you some of my collection of perfume bottles. There are four generations of bottles here and none is taller than 6″.

The beautiful blue glass one with the silver top was my Granny’s. I’m told that when she let me hold it when I was about 18 months old,  I bit the top! You can see how the shape is spoilt by my tiny new teeth!

Old Flower, Old Shop and New JCB

1    I love the way hydrangea flowers fade so prettily.

2   The Redruth Drapery Stores was the place to be in the past! People from all around came to get their suits, their best outfits and their hats. The beautiful frontage is still here but the store no longer.

3    Walking past the coal store this afternoon on my way back from buying tickets to see ‘The Old Tyre Swingers’, this brand- new JCB caught my eye. The contrast of its pristine newness contrasted so much with the grime of where it was working.

Mysterious Gate, Pasty Sign and Very Young Moon

1    Today’s walk took us past the mysterious gate again. This time I looked more closely and held my camera over the top to where I couldn’t see and discovered a path but I still don’t know where it goes. I shall have to ask some older people who’ve lived here much longer than we have. I did see the label this time – Marygate. I wonder who she was…….

3   Setting out for choir tonight (first sing in three weeks!) the moon had just risen. It was new on January 11th so is only three nights old and is very beautiful.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Illumination – Daybreak, Midday and Evening

1    I’d been contemplating the Weekly Photo Challenge and then woke to the beautiful illumination of first the sky by the sun, then of the chimneys opposite and the cottage, and then of the painting in the study.

2   We had a walk in the bright chill along the low cliffs at Godrevy, the only sound that of the sea, and the midday sun continued its illuminations of everything around me. I just love how the sun beams through the empty snail shell.

3   The last photo is of our new fence lit up last June by the evening sun.

PS Would you believe I missed this spectacular sunset?    I’ve been given permission to show you this one by Paul Hoskin.

Birthday Breakfast, Penryn and Potato Crop

1   The lovely Mr S made me my Birthday Breakfast today.  ( I know my birthday was nearly two weeks ago but, truth to tell, I have been unwell since before Christmas and not up to celebrating much at all. Yesterday I felt ‘normal’ for the first time in three weeks. My blog only allows for Beautiful Things! )

Birthday breakfast in our house is Bucks Fizz and croissants with cream cheese and avocado! This was my treat when we lived in Yorkshire and used to drive to York early in the morning on my birthday to have breakfast in Betty’s, a fabulous old fashioned cafe with wonderful food.  We often returned for lunch after a lovely wander around the alleyways of York and a visit to the Minster, to have their famous Rosti for lunch and then bought some of their coffee and a cake or two to take home. Thanks to Freefoto for the photograph.

2   The Clock Tower in Penryn still had some Christmas lights around it and from the car-park , I could see this Church which I think may be St Gluvias Church. I plan to go back to have a good look around sometime.

3   We’re having a birthday dinner tonight too and some of our new potatoes are on the menu. These are more than half of the whole crop……..!
