A Bloom, A Book and Supper

All alone in the narrow wall border, a Fritillary bloom  has appeared, much to our delight.

I’ve just finished reading a remarkable little book, ‘Grief is the Thing with Feathers’ by Max Porter. If any of you, dear Readers, have ever lost someone, this book will touch the raw grief and will hopefully also make you smile. I think it’s brilliant. The Guardian summary is exactly right.

A quick and easy supper was called for tonight, a delicious dish of comfort food – Macaroni Cheese to which I add little cherry tomatoes. It was good.

Hitchhiker’s Guide, Rodriguez and Comfort Food

1   BBC Radio 4 has done it again! This morning it was a live version of Douglas Adams’  Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy with the original cast from the BBC radio series. As a family, we loved this and played it in the car on the long journeys from Yorkshire to Cornwall to visit my parents, resulting in knowing much of it by heart!

2    Serendipity struck happily again this week (love that word and all it means!)  Several days ago, friends shared the music of Sixto Rodriguez with me and I loved it. Then, not knowing about that, another good friend lent us the dvd, Searching for Sugarman, about two fans’ search for Sixto after he disappeared from the music scene. I know my South African readers will know this story – just want everyone else to know too!    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKYEYNX-Eug

3   I felt in need of the Ultimate Comfort Food tonight so Macaroni Cheese it was. Totally scrumptious!

Waterbirds, Comfort Food and A Present

1    After choir, I was catching a quiet moment by the side of the river when I saw a fat, gingery looking bird with enormous webbed feet perched on a rusty buoy.  Though it had something of the Cormorant about it, I didn’t really recognise it and only discovered that it was a very young Cormorant when I checked it online.

2    There are times when only comfort food will do! My CF of choice this lunchtime was Semolina with Jam, proper nursery food and made in a moment and with Strawberry Freezer Jam at the ready in the freezer.  I was enchanted by the ice-crystals on the jam so had to wait to have my pudding until I had taken this photo!

3    Our Christmas present arrived form America this afternoon having had some contretemps with the Customs Office for some unfathomable reason. It is a beautiful bread basket with a clay insert which you heat in the oven and then it keeps the bread warm as long as necessary. It is both beautiful and useful thus satisfying the words of  William Morris –

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”.
