Looking out of the bedroom window this morning, the pattern in ice on the car was strikingly lovely. That’s our first real frost this year and it’s April!
It has been a gloriously bright day with unbroken blue skies – lovely and warm in the sun and still very cold in the shade.
We cooked rhubarb for the first time this year today, our favourite Different Every Time pudding.

2 I’ve been looking at my collection of Ambrose Heath cook books inherited from my Mum and with recipes that we still use. (See the Rhubarb one on my Recipe pages) Some of the books are illustrated with delightfully quirky Edward Borden woodcuts.

3 We’re off out tonight to a gig by The Old Tire Swingers. We’re told they are “another great bluegress act all the way from the U S of A Influenced by the Appalachian string bands as well as their own Central California country roots, they play a style that’s somewhere between old time, bluegrass, and country.”
1 Asked by whatshappeningatmyhouse, which charity would I give £1m if I had such a sum, I realised that ShelterBox is one of my beautiful things. Started by one man with a very big heart and a very special vision, here in Cornwall, this charity works worldwide to give shelter and dignity to those affected by disaster, be it natural (tsunami, earthquake etc) or man-made (war, civil strife etc). ShelterBox has brought these Fijian families new homes allowing them to start to rebuild their lives again whilst living in comfort and dignity.
2 My good friend, Jean, gave us a rhubarb plant at choir on Monday – and because we cannot pick any until next year, gave me a bunch of rhubarb too. Today I’ve made a very special pudding that has been cooked in our family for three generations! It’s an Ambrose Heath recipe called Rhubarb Butterscotch Pie but we don’t put it in a pie case and we call it Different-Every-Time Pudding because it is!
