Strawberry Jam, Church Noticeboard and Lettuces

When our lovely friend brought some scones and Cornish cream the other day, we assumed we had some strawberry jam in the freezer but no! We had to use bought jam. 🙂      In our delivery yesterday we bought some beautiful English strawberries and today I have started making the no-cook freezer jam which tastes so fresh and delicious.

We went to visit Gwennap Churchyard in a very heavy rainstorm this afternoon as we have a plan which I shall tell you about if it comes to fruition. On the noticeboard just outside the Churchyard, there is reference to the gravestone that was the inspiration for one of my Dad’s books, The Fate of Jeremy Visick.

Just nearby was a little stall selling beautiful fresh homegrown produce.Loved the ‘living lettuce’ but left it there as we have so much growing at home.

Freezer Jam, Fishing Boat and Flowers

1    After 24 hours the jam was ready to freeze – 9 small tubs now frozen away.

3   I became aware of a campaign today to remember the children killed in Palestine. We are invited to choose a name of a child whose life has been taken, to make a small bunch of flowers and put them somewhere where others will see with the words, ‘ I remember name aged ? who died in Palestine‘     Here is the link if you would like to join in this beautiful gesture.

Yesterday, Dying Day Lily and Strawberry Jam

1   I’m still reeling from yesterday’s wonderfully moving production. Tomorrow, I promise, the photos of the event. For now,  – war has just been declared and recruitment has begun.

Who is going to volunteer?

3   We’ve been so busy recently that I thought I’d missed finding strawberries to make the best jam in the world! Today we found some reduced English strawberries and so have started off the freezer jam. Because it isn’t cooked, it retains the truly delicious taste of just picked strawberries………  I’ll put the very easy recipe up the days after tomorrow when it is finished.

Hanging Basket, Strawberries and Shortcake

1   Driving home today, I was stopped at the lights and just managed to get this photo of the hanging basket at the junction. The town is full of these baskets this year and they are really beautiful.

2   We went to a local farm today and picked strawberries and raspberries and I spent the afternoon making Strawberry Freezer Jam (no cooking required) and prepared Strawberry jam which will need boiling tomorrow. The freezer jam is the best ever! Because it isn’t cooked, it tastes really fresh and keeps for ages in the freezer. It’s good on scones with cream, on ice-cream or swirled into ice-cream and is perfect in a Victoria sponge!  I would make only that kind of jam but there isn’t room in the freezer!

3   I also made a delicious Strawberry shortcake to take to a barbecue this evening using my Mum’s failsafe recipe. It pleases me enormously to make things in the way my Mum did.

Waterbirds, Comfort Food and A Present

1    After choir, I was catching a quiet moment by the side of the river when I saw a fat, gingery looking bird with enormous webbed feet perched on a rusty buoy.  Though it had something of the Cormorant about it, I didn’t really recognise it and only discovered that it was a very young Cormorant when I checked it online.

2    There are times when only comfort food will do! My CF of choice this lunchtime was Semolina with Jam, proper nursery food and made in a moment and with Strawberry Freezer Jam at the ready in the freezer.  I was enchanted by the ice-crystals on the jam so had to wait to have my pudding until I had taken this photo!

3    Our Christmas present arrived form America this afternoon having had some contretemps with the Customs Office for some unfathomable reason. It is a beautiful bread basket with a clay insert which you heat in the oven and then it keeps the bread warm as long as necessary. It is both beautiful and useful thus satisfying the words of  William Morris –

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”.
