Summer Rain, Rainy Garden and Dissenters’ Burial Ground

I follow a blog called A Poem a Day which gives me great pleasure. Now I share one of Siobahn’s choices which seems most appropriate today as warm summer rain falls all day here.

The Self-playing Instrument of Water – Alice Oswald

It is the story of the falling rain
To turn into a leaf and fall again

It is the secret of a summer shower
To steal the light and hide it in a flower

And every flower a tiny tributary
That from the ground flows green and momentary

Is one of water’s wishes and this tale
Hangs in a seed head smaller than my thumbnail

If only I a passerby could pass
As clear as water through a plume of grass

To find the sunlight hidden at the tip
Turning to seed a kind of lifting raindrip

Then I might know like water how to balance
The weight of hope against the light of patience

Water which is so raw so earthy-strong
And lurks in cast iron tanks and leaks along

Drawn under gravity towards my tongue
To cool and fill the pipe-work of this song

Which is the story of the falling rain
That rises to the light and falls again.

2     Here is the view through our back window of the rain in the back garden, helping to keep everything lush.

3   We dressed up in proper rain gear this afternoon as we wanted to visit The Dissenters’ Burial Ground in Falmouth which only opens three times a year. It was utterly fascinating and is maintained by two young men, Robert Nunn and Tom Weller, who discovered it, cleared it of its 5′ weeds, researched the history and who now share it with anyone interested. Please visit their website to find out so much more. Click on any photo in the gallery for a caption or more detail. We will have to go back to discover more. It was lovely to meet two people so passionate about their project.

Canary Creeper, Cherry Tomatoes and Agapanthus

My Mum loved the joke of growing Canary Creeper,Tropaeolum peregrinum, in this old bird cage. For the first time in I don’t know how many years, I have been successful in growing the little yellow bird-like flowers in Mum’s bird cage.

3   I think the shape of this nearly open blue Agapanthus is quite remarkable and very beautiful.  I’ll show you again when it opens right up.

Window, Door and Plaque

This window is one of many on the Acorn Theatre building in Penzance where we have spent the evening being entertained by Tony Hawkes as part of the Penzance Literary Festival.

Walking through some mews we noticed this lovely door with a beautiful little wooden porch.

Choir-Babies, Gallery and Bookshop

It was a super singing session today where we worked on the songs that will be sung at a Humanist Wedding Ceremony that I am conducting later this month. We had four delightful choir-babies with us today.

2    Truro for a bit of shopping was our destination for the afternoon – just a couple of beauties from the Lemon Street Gallery today – a plate with two very sweet owls and a wonderful piece from the candle parade from last November, a huge crow in the middle of all the ferns – very dramatic.

Paul’s Peace Walk From Rome to Jerusalem

At the end of July, our friend Paul Haines will be walking from Rome to Jerusalem with the focus on Peace and Reconciliation in the world. He will be wearing the peace dove symbol, carrying a book for people to sign, and asking for Messages of Peace that he can take with him as he walks, planning to be in Jerusalem sometime in December.

Paul would like to engage with as many people as possible, before, during and after his walk, hoping to help raise the profile and awareness of peace and in some way, hopes his walk will have some effect.

He started long-distance walking five years ago. Last year he walked from London to Rome in aid of two charities that are involved with health, dementia and music. He talked to many people as he walked for three months, and tried to help raise the awareness of the issues connected with dementia and the benefits of music for health.

Paul is linking up with two charities, “Children of Peace” a UK based charity that offers a non-partisan approach to conflict resolution in the Middle East and “Postcards for Peace” a UK based charity that provided the dove symbol with the word Peace in so many languages.  If you would like to, you can support Children of Peace with a contribution via Paul’s  Just Giving page.

He asks that people follow him on his website, Peacewalk 2015 and leave messages of peace. If you have a look at the messages of peace he has already collected, you will see that these include messages from several Archbishops, the Queen, Tim Smit, Abbot Phra Rachabhavanavimol, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sachs,  us and many more friends.   I have visitors from 100 countries visiting my site. How wonderful it would be if Paul got messages from all over the world from my own Dear Readers…….

The choirs I sing with, The Ingleheart Singers and The Suitcase Singers, have both recorded songs of peace for Paul to take with him. Here is one and I will share the others in posts to come.

Feel free to Re-blog/re-tweet this post. Please help to spread the word.

Goodbyes, July Flowers and A Poem

1    We saw our Best Beloveds off on the train this morning. As my lovely wise friend, Nicky, said, “Goodbyes aren’t always easy;  the gift for me is knowing that the feelings of sadness are a mirror to the love I feel.” That is exactly it.

2   Our garden continues to bloom.

3   This poem was on a blog I read recently and it encapsulates my philosophy of finding the beautiful in the everyday where “the world offers itself to your imagination.”   Thank you, Kath. The poet, Mary Oliver is new to me and I shall look for more of her work.

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
― Mary Oliver

Pistol Loop, Chandelier and St Michael’s Mount

Godolphin House is only open one week each month and we went there today on our last day with our Best Beloveds who leave tomorrow. Here are some highlights of the day.

Afterwards we drove to Marazion and had lunch in Godolphin Arms overlooking St Michael’s Mount. The photo was taken through a rain spattered window and the people are waiting for the tide to go out just a bit more so that they can walk over the causeway to the Mount. Some people are paddling across!

Last Day with the Family

All our lovely  kids have gone with their Little Live-wires and despite the Best Beloveds still being here, it is rather quiet. After the rain of the morning, we all went for Brunch at the Blue Bar in Porthtowan and then had a quiet afternoon with a lovely walk down to St Uny Churchyard.

4th July Party

Our Best Beloveds suggested we have a party for Independence Day so I ordered bunting and a tablecloth and we prepared sliders, totally new to us and very delicious, made hot dogs, various salads and a Cheesecake and had a brilliant time.
