Mosaic, Choir-Baby and Arizona Boots

While I have been away from singing, some new mosaics have been added to the building. This colourful fishy and boaty one is outside the pre-school room near to where we sing.

One of our choir members occasionally brings her Granddaughter to choir. Here she has stopped her colouring in and is gazing at the singers.

I love my hand-made Arizona boots, made to order for me many years ago by an artist friend of my sister who used to live in Prescott. I wore them to choir today. They always cheer me up should I need it. i didn’t today but they made lots of singers smile!

Singing, The Penryn River and KniTZTanzania

It was another fabulous session at choir today, as always enhanced by our beautiful Choir-babies.

The weather was again crisp and bright and I just managed to get these photos before the tide went out too far.

One of my choir friends has been knitting for KniTZTanzania as well and brought three beautiful sets to choir to be posted along with mine today. They have gone in the post this afternoon, 11 sets all bagged up with a message of love on each bag along with the name of the knitter – that’s Jen, Pauline, Ti and me.  It is lovely to think that our little outfits will be protecting babies in Tanzania from hypothermia.

Carol Ann Duffy, Singing and Pastor Niemoeller

Today is National Poetry Day in the UK and the BBC have been celebrating with poems throughout the day. One of the first poems I heard this morning on the BBC was this favourite, much loved  by all those who have been 10 years old and by all those who recognise a 10 year old that they have known – a delightful evocation of that final year of primary school and the transition to being just a bit more grown up – and maybe learning things you weren’t really sure that you wanted to know. It reminded me so much, not only of my own top year in Primary School at Bosvigo in Truro but also of the six years I taught the top class, the 10-11 year olds, at Plover Primary School in Doncaster.  Those were such happy days full of fond memories.

In Mrs Tilscher’s Class

You could travel up the Blue Nile
with your finger, tracing the route
while Mrs Tilscher chanted the scenery.
Tana. Ethiopia. Khartoum. Aswan.
That for an hour, then a skittle of milk
and the chalky Pyramids rubbed into dust.
A window opened with a long pole.
The laugh of a bell swung by a running child.
This was better than home. Enthralling books.
The classroom glowed like a sweetshop.
Sugar paper. Coloured shapes. Brady and Hindley
faded, like the faint, uneasy smudge of a mistake.
Mrs Tilscher loved you. Some mornings, you found
she’d left a gold star by your name.
The scent of a pencil slowly, carefully, shaved.
A xylophone’s nonsense heard from another form.
Over the Easter term the inky tadpoles changed
from commas into exclamation marks. Three frogs
hopped in the playground, freed by a dunce,
followed by a line of kids, jumping and croaking
away from the lunch queue. A rough boy
told you how you were born. You kicked him, but stared at your
parents, appalled, when you got back home.
That feverish July, the air tasted of electricity.
A tangible alarm made you always untidy, hot,
fractious under the heavy, sexy sky. You asked her
how you were born and Mrs Tilscher smiled,
then turned away. Reports were handed out.
You ran through the gates, impatient to be grown,
as the sky split open into a thunderstorm.

Today was my first time back at singing with The Suitcase Singers and it was just wonderful. How one’s spirits can be lifted by singing in harmony with other voices! Our lovely Choir-babies were there being very busy and a new baby has arrived while I’ve been away. Welcome, little one.

I asked the lovely Mr Smith for a poem for today that he would like me to include in today’s blog. Fern Hill by Dylan Thomas was one considered but he came to this one after lots of discussion and thought. We have had this postcard on our noticeboard in the kitchen for years.

Choir-Babies, Gallery and Bookshop

It was a super singing session today where we worked on the songs that will be sung at a Humanist Wedding Ceremony that I am conducting later this month. We had four delightful choir-babies with us today.

2    Truro for a bit of shopping was our destination for the afternoon – just a couple of beauties from the Lemon Street Gallery today – a plate with two very sweet owls and a wonderful piece from the candle parade from last November, a huge crow in the middle of all the ferns – very dramatic.

Window, Singing and A Poem

1   Getting held up in the traffic on the way to singing in Penryn this morning allowed me to get a photo of this lovely old window in Ponsanooth.

2   L, who moved to Glasgow, visited choir this morning with her lovely boys. We sang the little one to sleep in M’s arms.

3   With all the daffodils that we see as we drive around Cornwall at the moment and that I have been showing you, I thought this poem a good one to share.

To Daffodils

By Robert Herrick

Fair Daffodils, we weep to see
         You haste away so soon;
As yet the early-rising sun
         Has not attain’d his noon.
                        Stay, stay,
                Until the hasting day
                        Has run
                But to the even-song;
And, having pray’d together, we
Will go with you along.
We have short time to stay, as you,
         We have as short a spring;
As quick a growth to meet decay,
         As you, or anything.
                        We die
As your hours do, and dry
                        Away,
                Like to the summer’s rain;
Or as the pearls of morning’s dew,
Ne’er to be found again.

Singing, Tea-pots and Kindness

1 I went back to sing with The Suitcases this morning, only for an hour but, oh my, it did me good, though I was very tired by the end of the session. It was lovely to be so warmly welcomed back by my singing friends and a delight to see our choir babies again.

2 Outside Miss Peapod’s Cafe we noticed this delightful use of teapots, all beautifully planted.

Singing, Felting and Carol Singing

1   We had three Choir-babies with us today though W is far from being a baby! It is such a delight to have youngsters growing up with singing and then singing with us.

2   Tonight we sang carols in Falmouth finishing at The Poly where there was a craft fair. Just look at this beautiful felted work and pottery done by my lovely friend, N. It was a delightful evening.

3   I have driven past an antique shop in Penryn week after week and longed for a beautiful old Dovecot which he puts outside every day. Today I noticed that the owner is having a half price sale as he is retiring and I just couldn’t drive past!  Dear readers, I bought it!

Isn't it beautiful?

Singing, Choir Baby and Kedgeree

1   What a joy to be back at singing again this morning. I couldn’t join in everything but enjoyed watching our beautiful Choir baby, playing, dancing and singing.

2   Choir baby E has grown up so much in the weeks I have been away. Our last song today was the rousing Bella Ciao and our choir leader gave E her own copy of the words. She held them very seriously and sang along with fervour with the rest of us.

For a special treat, watch this short video, not very good quality but a treat nevertheless, listening to Choir-baby E singing Bella Ciao, backed by The Suitcase Singers.

3    A quick and easy supper was called for so Kedgeree (of a sort) was our choice.
