Sea View, First Beans and Iris Siberica

1   A new beach for us today, Praa Sands, an enormous stretch of lovely soft sand. It looks like a good place to bring the Grandchildren.

2    We have harvested our first Broad Beans and Pak Choi and ate them within twenty minutes of picking! I love that feeling of satisfaction with growing , picking and then eating your own veggies that I share with Heidi of Lightly Crunchy

Planting Broad Beans, Baking for Pudsey and Romanesque

1   Following the advice in Sunday’s paper, Mr S has today sown Broad beans to over-winter in the hope of an early crop. I love broad beans; one of my favourite vegetables.

2   Meanwhile I baked thirty-six delicious Spiced Toffee Apple Buns for selling on Thursday morning at choir in aid of Children in Need.  I’ll put the recipe up on my Recipe pages soon.

3   We had a delicious Chicken and Mixed Vegetable stir fry for supper tonight. This Romanesque is just remarkable and beautiful in a rather strange way and it worked well in the stir fry.

Harvest, Olive Tree and Montbretia with Cornflowers

1   We have harvested the last of our broad beans today – that feels both good and a bit sad. It means that Summer is almost over ……..  They were delicious and I have frozen some for later.

2   I pruned the Olive tree at the start of the summer (as advised) but was too hard on it and thought I’d killed it. Imagine my delight when I found these beautiful little shoots today! There are thirteen all together so it’s alive!

Pillow Case, Customer Service and First Broad Beans

1   KJ and the children are coming again tomorrow to spend the last few days with P&V and I’ve been getting the bedding ready. I love this pillow case that was my Mum’s.

2   We popped into Truro today and in one of my favourite shops there were these drinks available. What a lovely thing to do for your customers on a very hot day.

Vegetation, Exploration and Experimentation

1    We’re trying companion planting this year, Limnanthus, the Poached Egg Plant, with the Broad Beans and I love how it’s looking. The beautiful theory is that the Limnanthus will attract the aphids so they won’t attack the beans. I’m looking forward to seeing the flowers. My Mum loved the yellow and white of these little treasures.

2  Tabitha, wearing a cardigan I knitted, was a delight opening cupboard doors and exploring but pretending that she wasn’t really interested.

I’m not really trying to open the cupboard!

3    Our oldest daughter, Mikki, visited from Exeter today and spent the afternoon building an airport with Jake and then showed him some magic. Jake’s face was a picture as he did the ‘raisins in lemonade’ experiment. He loved the way the raisins sank to the bottom then came to the top covered in bubbles only to go down yet again.

P.S.  I’ve posted the recipe for the delicious Tunisian Almond and Orange Cake on my Recipe page. Hover over the Recipe header to see the menu of recipes.

Honeysuckle, Broad Beans and Grandbabies

1 The honeysuckle is looking beautiful and the bees are appreciating the blooms too.

Bumble bee on the honeysuckle

2 There was a Bumble bee on the honeysuckle but my biologist daughter tells me that this bee on the broad beans is a Honey bee. I’m not sure why, but that pleases me!

3    The children came home and Tabitha raided the cupboard for the beautiful colourful cup-cake cups and Jake had fun with Lucy.

and a question for my fellow bloggers who are gardeners – My Sprouting Broccoli is sprouting! I thought it was supposed to do this in the Winter and the Spring. Should I pinch out the tops or what? Please advise!

The Vegetable Patch, Clematis and Mark Steel

1   The broad beans are up about 3″ and I’ve planted Limnanthus (Poached egg plant) between the rows to attract the hover flies which are supposed to eat the aphids! I planted the leeks today in their deep holes in one raised bed and had some left over so I’ve put them in the salad bed quite close together so we can have some baby leeks earlier than the others.

2   All the time I was working in the vegetable garden, wafts of Clematis scent came drifting across – quite delightful.

3   Mark Steek was in town tonight, well, in Falmouth. Both before and after the show, we walked along the sea front and heard the sea breaking on the shore. From 8 until 11.30, Mark Steel kept the packed theatre laughing!

It was so sad to smell the smoke and see the tortured remains of the Falmouth Beach Hotel which had such a terrible fire on 30th April. Fortunately all missing people have now been traced but so many lives and jobs will have been affected.
