Chris Packham, Panther Video and Fortune Cookies

1   There was a brilliant programme on BBC TV last night, Inside the Animal Mind, with Chris Packham investigating how animals think. Catch it if you can on BBC iPlayer. This photo sums up the happiness of dogs!

2   A friend sent me this video today. Find time to watch it if you can – it is a very heartwarming film of an animal whisperer calming a very unhappy panther.

3   The postman delivered a soaking wet and falling-apart parcel for me today and was relieved when I wasn’t cross. Not a bit! I was delighted that the Fortune Cookies I had ordered for Chinese New Year had arrived safely!

Peace, Next Door’s Cat and Last Night

1    This morning the BBC news programme that we listen to every day, Today, had a very interesting Guest Editor, P J Harvey, and her programme was brilliant! You could listen to clips here if you wish.  There were several poems included but this one stopped me in my tracks. What an oxymoronic thing to do – to fight for peace.

THEY FIGHT FOR PEACE

Peace they say.
Peace of mind?
Peace of earth?
Peace of what kind?

I see them talking arguing, fighting –
What kind of peace are they looking for?
Why do they kill? What are they planning?

Is it just talk? Why do they argue?
Is it so simple to kill? Is this their plan?

Yes, of course!
They talk, they argue, they kill –
They fight for peace.

Shaker Abdurraheem Aamer, Guantanamo detainee

Shaker Abdurraheem Aamer is on hunger strike in Guantamamo. He has been accused of nothing and we feel very angry that he is there at all.

2   We went next door for mince pies and met their new cats for the first time. What beautiful creatures. I am looking forward to sharing them!

3   It’s D&A’s last night with us. They leave on the 10 o’clock train in the morning to fly home to Barcelona, the last of our family to leave. Terrific storms are forecast, just like the day they arrived, so we are half expecting the trains not to be running in which case we will drive them up to Bristol and have a couple of extra hours with them!

Planting Broad Beans, Baking for Pudsey and Romanesque

1   Following the advice in Sunday’s paper, Mr S has today sown Broad beans to over-winter in the hope of an early crop. I love broad beans; one of my favourite vegetables.

2   Meanwhile I baked thirty-six delicious Spiced Toffee Apple Buns for selling on Thursday morning at choir in aid of Children in Need.  I’ll put the recipe up on my Recipe pages soon.

3   We had a delicious Chicken and Mixed Vegetable stir fry for supper tonight. This Romanesque is just remarkable and beautiful in a rather strange way and it worked well in the stir fry.

Three Wise Monkeys, Othello and Bubbles

1   My Three Wise Monkeys sculpture, made in copper especially for me by the artist, Jeremy Beswick, some years ago, has today been put up on the wall by Mr S.  I grew up with three carved wooden monkeys but they didn’t end up with me so I had some made!  The Three Wise Monkeys “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”

2   What a treat! Shakespeare’s Othello has been on BBC Radio 4 this afternoon and I’ve been planting up my monkey sculpture with the radio close by. Lenny Henry was brilliant as Othello in this Northern Broadsides production.

3   Beautiful bubbles have been blowing over the fence from next door’s 5 year old having fun. 🙂  Click on the photo to enlarge and see the bubbles clearly.

Bubbles, caught on camera!

Poetry, Sunshine and British Summer Time

1   As I came into the kitchen this morning I heard, on BBC Radio 4, one of my favourite lines of poetry –                ” Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.”  The whole beautiful poem follows:

“Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.”   W. B. Yeats

2   A fabulous singing session this evening with Claire Ingleheart, the last before she goes off to London to work with Wildworks as M.D. on their new production, ‘Babel’. We ended with ‘You are my sunshine’ which seemed kind of appropriate.

The Ingleheart Singers.

3   It was delightful to drive home from singing in daylight, with lots of glimpses of the sea, for the first time for months as we are now back on British Summer Time.
