The birds have been loving the sunflower seeds from the head we brought back. I decorated the Cheesecake I made yesterday with our last three Violas and it went down a storm at the party.

Confit Duck, Lentils and Cheesecake
Because the lovely Mr S will be in hospital on his birthday next week (getting the best ever birthday present of a new knee) we have celebrated his birthday today with a croissant breakfast (family tradition), cards, presents and phone calls from family and a special dinner this evening. We first met Confit Duck with Lentils in a tiny restaurant in Tournon D’Agenais where we had rented a gite. It has become our go-to meal for celebrations.
The confit duck comes in a tin and just needs reheating and today I added a marmalade sauce and served it with Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Lentils, a Raymond Blanc recipe that I found in this week’s Radio Times. Delicious!
Our dessert is our favourite, Lime and Ginger Cheesecake, recipe to be found here.
Birthday – Presents, Pud and Pottery
The lovely Mr S has had a good day despite everything. Family phone calls and videos, cards and presents have made the day fun and we have ended with a favourite feast of Confit Duck and then the Lime and Ginger Cheesecake. To top it all (what a strange thing!) he has booked for his vaccine tomorrow!
I am trying to track down the maker of this pottery, initials JC. Just a call out in case anyone local might know. We know the potter is in Cornwall and was potting in the late1970s/early 1980s.
For those of you following my friend’s icy water exploits, she has added a comment to yesterday’s post. 🙂
Truro Cathedral, Cheesecake and Shoes
A busy day – Truro early in the rain and then to St Euny Church to meet with the Welsh Choir for our concert and a pot luck shared meal. More in tomorrow’s post.
Visiting Feline, Ginger Grater and Cheesecake
For the last two mornings a beautiful cat has visited. It’s the one we saw in a stand-off with Zorro a few weeks ago. I don’t know where it lives but it is really very beautiful with such lovely colours and symmetrical markings.
Ginger is one of my favourite ingredients (and for eating as crystallised pieces!) and I needed some grated for a delicious recipe from my new cookery book, The Art of Eating Well by Hemsley and Hemsley,Teriyaki Sea Bream. This little wooden tool is very efficient for grating ginger root.
I spent a happy morning making the first and last courses for the lovely Mr Smith’s birthday – Curried Cheese Ramekins to start and Lime and Ginger Cheesecake for dessert. I have attempted to make it in a ring mould as I am only cooking for two and we don’t need the whole recipe. I’ll let you know if it turns out properly! I put the crumbs on top of the ginger and now it is in the freezer.
Found Photos, Antique Painted Chest and Limes
1 My favourite camera, a Canon S100, is broken! (The lens won’t move and, it turns out, this is a common fault) However, I got out my less favoured Fujifilm X10 and discovered some photos that I have never downloaded so here, on a wet and cold December day is a photo of our back garden last May with rabbits and a magpie in the back field.
2 Another picture I found was of a beautiful painted chest from 1879 that was at the end of our bed in one of the places we stayed in in New England.
3 The Lime and Ginger Cheesecake for the big party is now in the freezer. What a beautiful colour the grated rind is against the cheese mixture.
Garden Wall, Baking and Meeting the Neighbours
1 At last it stopped raining and we were able to give the garden wall its first coat – on its way to becoming beautiful.
2 This afternoon I made the Lime and Ginger Cheesecake and put it in the freezer ready for the family reunion in July.
3 More cooking this evening as I went across the road to a Pampered Chef Party where two super dishes were demonstrated but the highlight of the evening was meeting so many of the lovely people in our road whom I had never met before. The Chef showed us how to make this fabulous Mediterranean Vegetable Ring (which I shall be making and putting onto the Recipe pages before too long) and then we were able to eat it! Delicious!
Penryn River, Miss Peapod’s Cafe and Guest Posting
1 I go to Penryn every week to sing with The Suitcases and this beautiful view never fails to move me! We are so lucky to be living in this most beautiful county.
2 An artist (whose name I must find out) has been working on these mosaics around the door and the windows of Miss Peapod’s Cafe which is where we all gather after singing for coffee, delicious homemade cakes, perhaps Poached Egg with Spinach on Toasted Ciabatta or even, as this morning for Claire and Mandy, a full English breakfast!
3 One of the blogs I read is by a 16 year old in Australia who is the most amazing cook. She is in Year 11 and has exams coming up so has to give her time to study. She has invited Guest Bloggers to blog on her space Go Bake Yourself during this time and I am absolutely delighted to have been chosen by her! I now have to choose between Chocolate Torte and Lime and Ginger Cheesecake, both of which I am making soon for our Family reunion party in July.
