My birthday treat was to go to St Ives on the train, one of the loveliest train journeys ever, to be by the sea, to visit the Hepworth sculptures in her garden, to go to the Tate and to have lunch out. We had not realised that New Year’s Eve means 20,000 people descend on the town for the New Year celebrations! The town was as busy as on the sunniest of summer days. Happily, we know our way around the little back streets (We had our honeymoon here in 1967) and managed to visit everywhere we had in mind, just skipping out on the lunch. Join us for a magical day.

Pink Kiss, Garden and Cake
Before I was up this morning, my lovely Mr S took this photo of vapour trails lit up by the rising sun.
He also took an early morning photo of our back garden showing the light tree and the bauble tree.
I made a fruity Heligan Pineapple Cake today topped with the delightful Snowman and Snowdog to serve as my birthday cake tomorrow. Click the red link for the recipe.
Welcome, Hat and Jolabokaflod
We’ve put up the welcome wreath on the front door just in time.
Our neighbours came round for mince pies, both wearing delightful Christmas hats.
My book from the ShelterBox book club arrived in the post yesterday so I decided to keep it for today, it being Jolabokaflod today (“Jolabokaflod, translating to “Christmas Book Flood,” is a unique and cherished tradition in Iceland, celebrated on Christmas Eve. This tradition involves giving and receiving new books, but its essence lies in the joy of reading them together.)”. We’ve been doing this for the last few years and love it. A lovely Christmas card was included in the package.
The book is The Other Americans by Laila Lalami and I’m about to get stuck into it………
Happy Christmas to all my Dear Readers and especially to my cousins in Australia!
Silver, Mince Pies and Parmesan Stars
We discovered a beautiful little shop today, that has been in Hayle for many years! I’ll show you on Christmas Day what was bought there today.
This afternoon I have made many mince pies for our traditional visit from our neighbours tomorrow afternoon, after the BBC’s Nine Lessons and Carols on Radio 4.
With the leftovers of pastry, I made lots of parmesan stars, so tasty and tiny that they are nearly all gone already!
Wild Seas, Baubles and Christmas Trees
Our lovely Daughter No 1 has been with us today and we went down to the Blue Bar for lunch. Sadly, there was a power cut just after we arrived so after a wild blow for a few moments of watching the waves and the sea foam we came home.
Our neighbours have some crazy bell baubles in their tree that are keeping us amused as they are buffeted by the winds.
Last night at the Pavilions there was the annual Christmas tree display , all decorated by local schools and other groups.
