Garden Wall, Baking and Meeting the Neighbours

1   At last it stopped raining and we were able to give the garden wall its first coat – on its way to becoming beautiful.

Before

After

2  This afternoon I made the Lime and Ginger Cheesecake and put it in the freezer ready for the family reunion in July.

3   More cooking this evening as I went across the road to a Pampered Chef Party where two super dishes were demonstrated but the highlight of the evening was meeting so many of the lovely people in our road whom I had never met before. The Chef showed us how to make this fabulous Mediterranean Vegetable Ring (which I shall be making and putting onto the Recipe pages before too long) and then we were able to eat it! Delicious!

Batch Baking Day, Neighbours Return and Mini Digger

1   Little sun until this afternoon so a batch baking day ready for a family visit next week. Made some delicious Lemony Pork and Chicken Meatballs (will be on my Recipe page soon) , a big panful of Ragu, and a Chicken,Lentil and Mushroom Casserole. I also made some beautiful Choc Chip Mini Muffins (on the recipe page) to try out a new recipe to bake with Jake (3 years old) when he’s here next week. Like his Mum, he loves baking too.

2   Our lovely neighbours are home after 7 weeks away with Babel in London. It’s so good to have them home!

3   I think this mini digger is very beautiful – and when the work is finished our drive will be beautiful too!

Some bonus flower pictures, micro photographs, taken this evening, with advice from another blogger, kyle78234 Thank you!

Lily of the Valley, Copper Sculpture and ‘The Giant’

1    The Lily-of-the -Valley that I planted last week in Kath’s memory are putting up shoots already. If you look really closely top right of the photo, you can even see tiny flower buds.

2   I love this small copper sculpture, ‘The Lost Ball’,  made by the very talented artist Jeremy Beswick.    It is one of several of his that we have and I love them all.

3    I went next door with some Nutella meringues (they were so light, the wind nearly blew them off the plate!) and in exchange had ‘The Giant’ signed by the sculptors who just happen to be our lovely neighbours.

Learning Wolof, Our Czech Painter and Singing with the Inglehearts

1  Last night Daniel gave us our first few phrases of Wolof to learn and we’ve been practising. I particularly like the greeting, ‘Yangui si jam?’ (Are you at peace?) and the reply, ‘Waw, mangui si jam.” (Yes, I am peaceful.) We will need some Wolof as well as French for our trip to Senegal in April.

2  Veronika, our Czech painter (of ColourGirlz) has been here today painting the woodwork in our hall. She is a meticulous worker and is so appreciative of my home baking.  I had made her some of my Mum’s Mocha Crispies.

Mum's Mocha Crispies Recipe

3  Singing with Claire and the Inglehearts has as usual lifted my spirits even when I didn’t realise they had any lifting to do! We sang a beautiful new piece composed by Claire which was moving enough in its initial learning and will be amazing when we have learned it all. I am so happy that we moved where we did so that our lovely neighbours could introduce me to Claire!

Flowers in our Garden at Christmas, Bird Watching and Just the Best Neighbours

1  So much colour still and it’s really quite mild.

2  Lucy spotted a Goldcrest at the fat balls on the window feeder – such a beautiful little bird. We were able to watch for quite a long time.

3  Our lovely neighbours have taken in a third batch of washing for us since our machine broke down completely a few days ago, just when we had a houseful including a toddler and a baby! Despite Mr S’s best efforts, it can’t be mended and a new one can’t be delivered until January 3rd. Thanks S!

Stuffings, Carols and Mr and Mrs Rice

1  I spent another happy morning cooking! I’ve made three stuffings, one with lemon and cranberry along with the sausage meat base for chicken no 1, the next with leeks, chives and garlic for chicken no 2 and a fat free one  for Mr S whose gall bladder op is on 29th December so he has to eat very low fat until then – hard  for him at Christmas.

2  I listened as always, to the 9 lessons and carols, as I always did with my Mum and Dad. Cheers to them and other absent friends this Christmas.

3  Mr Rice is a star. He takes over the cooking on Christmas Eve – smoked salmon and cream cheese for lunch and a wonderful baked ham for dinner leaving me free and ready for the morrow! The lovely KJ has sorted all the veg and any minute now we are in for a feast!

4  Our lovely neighbours called in at 4.30 for what is becoming a tradition. Happy times.  And a Happy Christmas to all my readers – doubt I’ll be writing tomorrow!

5  I just have to add – the joy of seeing a 3 year old putting out the mince pie for Father Christmas and oats for his reindeer. An early morning awaits us I think!

Tuesday 8th November

1  Came down early this morning to find a little blue-tit on the window feeder and he didn’t fly off as I arrived.

2  I’ve been rearranging lots of our paintings so that we notice them again. We finally hung our three African embroideries  in the dining room and they look brilliant, changed the feel of the room in some way.

3  Had our lovely neighbours B&S and two  long standing friends, R&R, in for supper –  an evening full of warmth and humour – just the thing. The casserole and the cheesecake were enjoyed by all.

Friday 4th November

1 Had my first piano lesson for 8 weeks! Hadn’t been able to practise much but it wasn’t a disaster.

2 I had thought it would be impossible to bring the 4 new (very heavy) bookcases upstairs ourselves and was all for calling in help from our lovely neighbours but with Mr Smith’s usual ingenuity, we got them all up without too much effort and they fit!

3 Went to the Hall for Cornwall to see comedy stand ups, very funny but the best thing was meeting a friend I hadn’t seen for a couple of months and being able to catch up.
