A Birthday, A Bluebell and Finishing Touches

This time last year we were celebrating a 100th birthday on the beach. This year has been a quieter affair for Ti as we are all held at home and the weather has been very wet. We sent along some highly scented flowers and were happy to know that they were very well received by our Dear and precious friend.

There has been a downpour all night and most of the day. Catching raindrops in photos is one of my favourite things.

I have put the finishing touches to the scrub caps and they have been collected today. A lovely neighbour brought some Weleda hand cream sachets to go in with the caps this morning and last night I sewed in the ‘Homemade with love’ labels.

Another Lane, Bluebells and Yeast Buns

We often walk along Church lane and love the big Oak Tree at the start of the lane.

Further along, just before we turn up to The Great Flat Lode, we noticed the blue in the fields below Carn Brea and realised that the farmer has mown very carefully around an enormous patch of  Bluebells.

A lovely friend from choir does some top-up shopping for us and today turned up with our shopping and some delicious yeast buns that she had made this morning. We exchanged that for some Blueberry Streusel Cake that I had baked knowing that J would be here in the afternoon.

Bluebell, Weather Vane and Supper

The lanes we take on our walk are becoming clouds of blue with English Bluebells.

We passed this weather vane in someone’s garden today. Just behind, you can see Carn Brea with the Castle and Bassett Monument.

We enjoyed a  delicious supper tonight of Mushroom, Feta and Tomato Baked Peppers, a Hairy Bikers’ recipe.

Being Granny, A Poem and Wise Words

Our LiveWires have gone home and it is very quiet today. They had a good time as did we and I was very touched when T, LiveWire no 3 said, “I really want to be a Granny when I’m old enough. It’s fun being a Granny!” Yes, it is!

Climbing on Carn Brea

Swinging at Heartlands

This poem came my way today and touched a chord. I have a favourite walk that I take my mind on when I can’t sleep, around St Anthony Head. Happily, I need this less than when I was working and now , of course, we are close enough to do the walk for real. Then I was in South Yorkshire.

Association by Franz Wright

Dawns when I can’t sleep I walk,
in thought, all the way
around Walden.

My father loved Thoreau, I wish
he could have walked there
with me once,

my hungover Virgil. Lying in bed
with a big ax
lodged in my head, I still hear him

as if from the next room
bumping into things and cursing.
Give us this day, he mutters,

our daily stone. Nice.
Can’t blame him, though. This morning
can’t sleep for missing him.

It’s two years since our lovely neighbour, Bill Mitchell, died and he is missed and remembered with great love by so many. This description of grief from a child whose Grandfather had died, I found very touching.

Wisdom of a child

For newer readers, here is the post I wrote about Bill two years ago.

Castle, Monkeys and John Clare

Walking home from town today, we suddenly caught an unusual view of Carn Brea Castle from just near our house.

Carn Brea Castle

Our Three Wise Monkeys are now in charge of a floriferous Begonia which was yellow when we bought it, changed to pink soon after and is now this lovely peachy colour.

Begonia

This morning on Radio 4, I heard this beautiful poem by John Clare being read but I missed the introduction so don’t know why it was chosen.  The summer has not been ‘beaming forth’ today as temperatures have plunged from 30C to 15C and the skies have stayed grey though the last many weeks past, we have had the most glorious sunshine.

Sonnet by John Clare

I love to see the summer beaming forth
And white wool sack clouds sailing to the north
I love to see the wild flowers come again
And mare blobs stain with gold the meadow drain
And water lillies whiten on the floods
Where reed clumps rustle like a wind shook wood
Where from her hiding place the Moor Hen pushes
And seeks her flag nest floating in bull rushes
I like the willow leaning half way o’er
The clear deep lake to stand upon its shore
I love the hay grass when the flower head swings
To summer winds and insects happy wings
That sport about the meadow the bright day
And see bright beetles in the clear lake play

Looking it up, I discovered that ‘mare blobs’ are marigolds – what a delightful name!

Sunset

First photo driving home from Truro and catching the view of Carn Brea from Station Hill,  Redruth, just as the sun slipped below the horizon, on a long zoom:

Then as the sky turned pink, from the back bedroom window:

Blue Sky, Shadow and Carn Brea

On my two mile walk back from delivering our car to the garage early this morning, I was, as always, keeping a lookout for lovely things and I found them!

A couple of autumn coloured leaves against a cerulean sky

Heart shaped shadow

Carn Brea through skeleton trees and russet leaves

Carn Brea, Sky Kiss and Two Gifts

We had a windy walk around Carn Brea today, away from everything, to allow my brain to settle down! St Euny Church can be seen among the trees from our vantage point at the top. On a clear day the sea can be seen on the North and the South coasts but not today. As well as the views and the flowers  I found a little heart in the dust.

Then we spotted the Sky-kiss left by vapour trails in the sky.

Friends have been so kind and loving over this whole Until the Day Break period. On the first night I was given, by J&M, a lovely bunch of purple, white and green flowers which are still going strong and on the last night, a magnet depicting the strong women we had been representing in the graveyard with our March of the Women song( from D&R) Thank you all.
