A Family, Monkeys, A Special Meal and A Recipe

On our walk today, we were overtaken by a young family that we know, all out on their bikes, the littles one being towed. They were off to do the whole Great Flat Lode. We walk just a small section. It isn’t flat, by the way. This section is quite a steep hill.

In between showers, we have managed to plant up the Monkey planter and it looks lovely against the newly painted wall, which is cream rather than white but looks white in the photo. A local artist, Jeremy Beswick, made this precious basket for me many years ago.

We are ‘going out’ for dinner again tonight, collecting a Confit Duck meal from The Royal Oak in Perranwell. Here is this week’s menu.

I have put the recipe for Strawberry Freezer Jam on my recipe pages today.  It’s very easy and totally scrumptious.

Castle, Monkeys and John Clare

Walking home from town today, we suddenly caught an unusual view of Carn Brea Castle from just near our house.

Carn Brea Castle

Our Three Wise Monkeys are now in charge of a floriferous Begonia which was yellow when we bought it, changed to pink soon after and is now this lovely peachy colour.

Begonia

This morning on Radio 4, I heard this beautiful poem by John Clare being read but I missed the introduction so don’t know why it was chosen.  The summer has not been ‘beaming forth’ today as temperatures have plunged from 30C to 15C and the skies have stayed grey though the last many weeks past, we have had the most glorious sunshine.

Sonnet by John Clare

I love to see the summer beaming forth
And white wool sack clouds sailing to the north
I love to see the wild flowers come again
And mare blobs stain with gold the meadow drain
And water lillies whiten on the floods
Where reed clumps rustle like a wind shook wood
Where from her hiding place the Moor Hen pushes
And seeks her flag nest floating in bull rushes
I like the willow leaning half way o’er
The clear deep lake to stand upon its shore
I love the hay grass when the flower head swings
To summer winds and insects happy wings
That sport about the meadow the bright day
And see bright beetles in the clear lake play

Looking it up, I discovered that ‘mare blobs’ are marigolds – what a delightful name!

Autumn Dawn, Painting and Scrumping

Waking up too early, I was lucky enough to catch a lovely dawn sky.

I have painted the small wall near the kitchen over the last couple of days and today we have put back the Three Wise Monkeys which I planted up with little Spring flowers the other day. I tried to clean the copper monkeys to make them shine again. As you can see, neither the copper cleaner nor the lemon juice worked bit we rather like the effect that has been left.

My lovely neighbour and I did a little scrumping today! Now I can make an almost free Blackberry and Apple crumble, having gathered the blackberries the other day.

Everything is too quiet now that our lovely Live-wires have gone home. Happily, they will be back for Easter.

I came across this photo of Truro (I showed you the Cathedral yesterday) which was taken by a drone. I love how the Cathedral seems to grow right out of the middle of the city. Sorry, I don’t know whom to credit for the photo.

Clover, Colour and Clouds

1   Walking through the park into town this morning, the honey scent of the clover was quite heady.

As I’m writing this I’m looking out of the window into the field at the back and there’s a young fox chasing magpies, rabbits and his own tail!

Clock, Three Wise Monkeys and Hungry Caterpillar

1   When I was doing the aforementioned Spring cleaning yesterday, I polished up this very old and lovely clock of my Granny’s. It just sits on the shelf in the kitchen stuck at 7.20. But, a beautiful thing happened yesterday. I tried winding it and reset the hands and it is working again!    It’s been going for 24 hours and is still ticking!

2   The miniature daffodils in my Wise Monkey planter are blooming even though crows and sparrows alike are stealing the coconut liner material for their nests!

Three Wise Monkeys, Othello and Bubbles

1   My Three Wise Monkeys sculpture, made in copper especially for me by the artist, Jeremy Beswick, some years ago, has today been put up on the wall by Mr S.  I grew up with three carved wooden monkeys but they didn’t end up with me so I had some made!  The Three Wise Monkeys “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil”

2   What a treat! Shakespeare’s Othello has been on BBC Radio 4 this afternoon and I’ve been planting up my monkey sculpture with the radio close by. Lenny Henry was brilliant as Othello in this Northern Broadsides production.

3   Beautiful bubbles have been blowing over the fence from next door’s 5 year old having fun. 🙂  Click on the photo to enlarge and see the bubbles clearly.

Bubbles, caught on camera!
