Thrush, Flowers and Care

A Thrush serenaded us early this morning.

A lovely neighbour has taken some parcels to the post office for me today – the masks for the Barcelona bunch and the old wings from my Fairies that need repairing. I have sent them to the artist, Samantha Bryan who made them and who has advised me on their removal. I have also sent her the feathers that I was given and she is going to make them into wings. Such excitement that my fairies are going to be able to fly again! I picked a bunch of flowers from the garden to say thank you to N.

Our decorators are brilliant, such careful preparation of the walls and windows and they care about our garden. Here they have thoughtfully covered the edible garden so that the painty bits coming off the walls don’t mess up our food.

A Visit, Eggs and Feathers

19 May

One of our very dear friends came by today now that we are allowed to meet outside. We spent a very happy couple of hours in the garden. N brought with her some wonderful gifts and a pile of beautiful story books for us to borrow to read over Skype to our three year old LiveWire twins in Barcelona.

There were freshly laid eggs, two of which which we will have for breakfast and freshly dug new potatoes which we have enjoyed this evening.

N also brought me some delicate feathers for a very special purpose. I have a wonderful collection of Samantha Bryan’s fairies (Did you know all fairies have to learn to fly?) and a couple of them have disintegrating wings! They were made of skeleton leaves which are not as long lasting as feathers which many of my fairies have. We are going to try to replace the leaves with feathers – after getting advice from the maker herself.

That was a very precious few hours as we haven’t seen each other for almost three months and at the beginning of that time, N suffered with C19 and we were so very worried. It was just wonderful to see her properly again not just on a screen even if we couldn’t hug.

Another Lane, Bluebells and Yeast Buns

We often walk along Church lane and love the big Oak Tree at the start of the lane.

Further along, just before we turn up to The Great Flat Lode, we noticed the blue in the fields below Carn Brea and realised that the farmer has mown very carefully around an enormous patch of Bluebells.

A lovely friend from choir does some top-up shopping for us and today turned up with our shopping and some delicious yeast buns that she had made this morning. We exchanged that for some Blueberry Streusel Cake that I had baked knowing that J would be here in the afternoon.

Fledgling, Flour and Flowers

A pigeon regularly sits on our sculpture, Fledgling, as a staging post for the feeders.

The doorbell rang this morning, a most unusual occurrence at the moment. There on the doorstep was a bag of strong flour and further down the drive at a socially distancing appropriate place was our good friend J from choir, shopping for various people, who thought of us and my lack of strong flour! What a treasure she is! Bread making is back on the agenda as I also sourced some fresh yeast today!

It is the third anniversary of the death of our dear friend and neighbour, Bill. We remember him with a garden posy of Rosemary, Forget-me-nots and Primroses, one here in our house and one for Sue-next-door, with much love.

Shared Supper, Shoes and Helping

Last night was The Ingleheart Singers’ Christmas dinner and we all took along a dish to share. I made the Vegetable Ring which looks good for a Christmas meal and is delicious! It was well received and every crumb went! You can find the recipe here.

I love beautiful shoes as regular readers will know. These two pairs were particularly covetable last night.

I am resolved, after the disaster of last week, to do all I can to mitigate the effects of our Tory government and to treat the world and all those in it with even more kindness. There is a new homeless person in our town this week. It was bitterly cold this morning so I bought him a pair of gloves. My gesture plus the carol singer further up the street made him weep though he then told me of the generosity of Redruth people as he had been bought a hot drink just before I went by and others had stopped by to see how they could help.

Sunset, Christmas Tree and Kindness

As I left for choir this evening, the sky was on fire.

The children at the school where we rehearse every week had been busy today decorating their Christmas tree.

I saw this the other day and loved it. I want our town to put the I into KIND on International Kindness Day next year on November 13th.

Market, Parade and Happiness

The Christmas Market went well despite the appalling weather.

It was the Lights Switch-on Parade tonight and my choirs were singing in the pouring rain but with smiles on our faces! The Parade went by in a misty blur.

It will be December tomorrow. Here is Action for Happiness’s advice for the month.

World Heart Day, Twins and Kindness

Forty two years ago yesterday, September 29th 1977, the older of our baby twins was operated on to save his life. He was 13 days old and the surgeon described his aorta as being as narrow as the inner tube of a biro. That wonderful surgeon, Mr Devereux, saved D’s life. I am reminded of this as a friend mentioned that yesterday was World Heart Day.

That lovely boy, who had to undergo two more heart operations, the second at 6 months and the final one at two and a half, is now the father of twins himself, LiveWires 5 and 6.

Altruism, Beans and A Butterfly

Action for Happiness are focussing on kindness this month.

We have our first harvest of beans – beautifully purple until they are cooked and then they are, disappointingly, just green.

We’ve been at the Ecp Park this evening for an Extinction Rebellion meeting. Beforehand we walked around and spotted a Painted Lady butterfly on the rough wall surrounding the fire pit.

A Bargain, A Project and A Poem

We met a friend at the Car-boot sale on Sunday. She is just the best bargain hunter and had discovered this delightful panel for £2. It is destined to become cupboard doors. Isn’t it delightful?
