A Good Future, Sourdough and A Special Pie

Another piece of timely wisdom from Thich Nhat Hanh came my way today – the beautiful artwork is Evening Swim by Maja Lindberg.

Our lovely neighbour made a Sourdough loaf and gave us half. We had some of it toasted with our lunch of last year’s Christmas Soup. Christmas Soup is a family favourite of turkey stock made from the bones and then everything ‘leftover’ ( potatoes, carrots, parsnips, chestnuts, sausages, stuffing, bread sauce, gravy, turkey meat and everything else but the sprouts) whizzed up to make a thick meal in a bowl. This year we had a duck, there being only two of us but I had frozen and hidden(!) two pint pots of this special treat.

I made a pie tonight – Duck and Lentil – and it was delicious! Many years ago we were on holiday in France, in a gite in a Penne D’Agenais, a fortified medieval hilltop town on the banks of the Lot River and in a little restaurant there had some amazing Duck and Lentil pie. This is the first time I have tried to replicate it and it was a great success, setting off lots of lovely memories.

Shared Supper, Shoes and Helping

Last night was The Ingleheart Singers’ Christmas dinner and we all took along a dish to share. I made the Vegetable Ring which looks good for a Christmas meal and is delicious! It was well received and every crumb went! You can find the recipe here.

I love beautiful shoes as regular readers will know. These two pairs were particularly covetable last night.

I am resolved, after the disaster of last week, to do all I can to mitigate the effects of our Tory government and to treat the world and all those in it with even more kindness. There is a new homeless person in our town this week. It was bitterly cold this morning so I bought him a pair of gloves. My gesture plus the carol singer further up the street made him weep though he then told me of the generosity of Redruth people as he had been bought a hot drink just before I went by and others had stopped by to see how they could help.

Space-Hopper, Rabbit and Quotation No 3

The Space-hopper we keep for the Grandkids moves around the garden… Today I spotted it sitting on the bench looking somewhat pleased with itself!

Driving home from singing tonight, a little rabbit was waiting to cross the road. I could only stop for a moment and the focus is not good but he was very sweet, crossed the road and ran off.

The following quotation applies to absolutely everyone everywhere:

“Because of your smile, you make life more beautiful”

Thanks to my blogging friend Ute Smile for nominating me for the 3 day Quote challenge!   I am very happy to take part in this challenge and for Day Three, the above quotation from Thich Nhat Hanh is my choice.    I am supposed to nominate three others to take part but I invite any of you to join me in this lovely Challenge, in the comments or in your own blog. These are the “Rules”

  • Post one quotation a day for three days (they can be from other sources or one of your own).
  • Nominate 3 other bloggers to participate per post.
  • Thank the blogger who nominated you.

P.S. I have been told by Sylvia that Jude might like this post for her bench series so here you are Jude. I hope it fits your brief.

Home Again, Coincidences and Thich Nhat Hanh

1   It’s always good to be home but this time tinged with sadness as we don’t know when we’ll be seeing D,A and Grandbaby N again. Getting a Visa to visit the UK seems to be a nigh on impossible task. Even though our son is British, born here in the UK, bringing in his Senegalese wife and daughter just for a holiday takes months to organise as they jump through innumerable hoops, provide masses of paperwork in triplicate and have to have us as sponsors.

2   There was an enormous pile of post waiting for us, mostly routine but with one delightful letter, our first from the child in Senegal whom we have just started sponsoring through Plan. Such a strange coincidence – her name is A as our daughter-in-law and N like our new Grandbaby!  Steven, our first sponsored child who has now reached 18, shared a family name too and had the same birthday as my Dad – something serendipitous happening here!

3   I heard yesterday that Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh is very ill at this time. Please join me in sending healing energy to this humble global spiritual leader, poet and peace activist, revered throughout the world for his powerful teachings on mindfulness and peace.

On a lighter note, I am pleased to report that my recipes are getting a lot of traffic and my recipe for Runner Bean Soup has had a remarkable 2,407 hits in the last month and comes top when you Google Runner Bean Soup! There have been some pleasing comments too!

First Shoes, Dilip’s Blog and Angry Birds

1  Delightful shopping for first shoes for Tabitha, one next week and Jake needed some too. Interesting that she was only offered pink ones and the ones for Jake were brown and green.

New Shoes

2  On one of the blogs I follow, I found the following beautiful thoughts from a Vietnamese philosopher, Thich Nhat Hanh:   “When we walk slowly, in a relaxed way, keeping a light smile on our lips, we feel deeply at ease and can feel our sorrows and anxieties drop away and peace fill our hearts. Anyone can do it. It only takes a little mindfulness and the wish to be happy.”  Thank you, Dilip. My dear Kath would have been so pleased to know of this new link with Vietnam and would have loved these thoughts.

3 Jake, 3, helped me buy and then taught me how to play a new version of Angry Birds on my iPad! The computer facility that little people have continues to amaze me!

Bonus pleasing thing for today, just found on the publish page:   ” I love words. I love to sing them and speak them and even now, I must admit, I have fallen into the joy of writing them.Anne Rice   Me too!
