Wise Words, A Poem and A Flower

1   A good friend sent this on Facebook. Well said!

Dust if you must! from Shelagh

‘Dust if you must’ from Shelagh, thank you – a woman after my own heart!

2   One of my favourite books is Poem for the Day and the poem for today, 30th September, is one I particularly like.

The Road Not Taken

“Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.”

– Robert Frost

Truro Cathedral, Outside and Inside

I grew up in Truro, Cornwall, and always loved the Cathedral. It seems to grow out of the centre of the city and dominates the skyline. On my birthday, New Year’s Eve, as quite a little girl,  I was allowed to stay up to hear the Cathedral bells to ring in the New Year and we used to stand on the doorstep in the dark and listen to the chimes. I just loved this – so much so that when I was exiled in Yorkshire and after all our children had left home, we came to Truro for several New Year holidays just so that I could hear the bells. And now, happily, we have moved back home to Cornwall…..    Click on any photo to see more detail.

Global Love Letters, Fallen Leaves and Spring

Global Love Letters come to Redruth

Global Love Letters come to Redruth

1  Today I discovered Global Love Letters, a beautiful movement to share love. I visited a small gallery in Redruth with an exhibition all about writing and sharing the words, writing your own message and sharing it, writing love letters anonymously to strangers and sharing the good feelings generated – and spreading this around the world. It is well worth looking at the website, http://globalloveletters.com/ and watching the videos. I sat at the desk and wrote my letter and left it behind to be found by a stranger. If you are local, the exhibition is worth a visit.

2   It has been very windy and leaves are already lying thick on the ground. Our Autumn colours are quite subdued but for the Virginia Creeper which I found in all its glory climbing up a wall in the side road near the gallery.

3   We’ve had a very productive afternoon clearing the vegetable boxes and planting shallots and garlic, trimming the Pittosporum hedge and mowing the lawn but my favourite job was planting another 40 bulbs in the walled garden outside the kitchen for colour next Spring.

Today and everyday, my posts are my love letters to you all, my lovely readers.

Clematis, Dahlia and Othello

1   There is just one flower on the clematis, a final fling before the winter comes along.

3   The National Theatre occasionally sends live feeds of stage plays to cinemas all over the country and tonight we have been privileged to be in the audience for one of my favourite Shakespeare plays, Othello, just down the road at our local cinema. It was brilliant – the whole audience left the theatre still with bated breath.  It was a truly thrilling production – so like being right there in the theatre that the cinema audience applauded along with those actually at The National! Set in modern dress and with the war in the desert, the timelessness of the themes (and the words) of Shakespeare’s plays strikes the audience anew.

The following is taken from the publicity material.

“The National Theatre presents a major new production of William Shakespeare’s celebrated play about the destructive power of jealousy.Olivier Award-winning actor Adrian Lester (Henry V at the National Theatre, BBC’sHustle) takes the title role.Playing opposite him as the duplicitous Iago is fellow Olivier Award-winner Rory Kinnear (The Last of the Haussmans, James Bond: Skyfall), who is reunited with director Nicholas Hytner (Timon of AthensOne ManTwo Guvnors) following their acclaimed collaboration on the National Theatre’s recent production of Hamlet. Othello, newly married to Desdemona – who is half his age – is appointed leader of a major military operation. Iago, passed over for promotion by Othello in favour of the young Cassio, persuades Othello that Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair.”

Street Flowers, Convolvulus and Monochrome Grasses

1   There are so many beautiful hanging baskets in our small town, adding colour up and down the streets. The flowers inside and outside the opticians caught my eye.

3    On the way up from town I liked the way the grasses were backlit by the sky. I took this photo in colour but the rather lovely effect is almost monochrome.

Carrots, Furniss Island and A New Wool Shop

1   Bright orange carrots with their frothy, green foliage always look so lovely on the Greengrocer’s stall.

2   On this beautifully warm Autumn day, we took our lunch to a little park we are fond of in Truro. We hadn’t been for some time and were delighted to discover a real treat. The Friends of Furniss Island had been busy planting a vegetable patch for the use of anyone who would like to harvest a few beans or courgettes or herbs or, as in our case, some baby tomatoes which we ate straight from the vine with our sandwiches! What a beautiful and generous idea.

3   Another discovery today was a new wool shop! Oh, joy! Just look at this delightful sign all knitted up and such a range of wonderful wools to choose from. I have several projects underway at the moment but will be back!

Fungi, Feather and Singing

1   I caught sight of these fungi in a neighbour’s drive on the walk up from town. I wonder which creature finds them so tasty. They seem to take quite big chunks.

Gladioli, Beach Walk and An Engine House

1   Last night, the friends who came to dinner brought us some beautiful Gladioli in purple, white and green as they know what these colours mean to me. Thank you P&A!

2  It’s officially the first day of Autumn today and in temperatures of 22C, we walked from Porthtowan along the beach at low tide  to Chapelporth.   Surfers surfed, children played, dogs paddled, girls rode by on their horses and people, like us, walked the length of the beach in the Autumn sunshine. I love the sound of the waves breaking on the beach. It’s a sound I grew up with and  I relish every moment I can be by the sea and listen to the soughing of the waves onto the beach………

3    Seeing Towanroath Shaft Pumping Engine House at Wheal Coates from the beach shows just how much on the edge of the cliff the mine was. I posted two photos of the engine house from the top of the cliffs here if you missed them. One is mine of sunset at the engine house and the other, by Tim Martindale, is of the Milky Way behind the engine house and is just awesome!

We are getting very excited about our New England in the Fall holiday!
