A Posy and A Poem

We took our first three daffodils as a posy for our dear friend today and she loved them.

We always enjoys poetry together, ‘Warning’ by Jenny Joseph, ‘The Path Less Travelled’ by Robert Frost , ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’ by Edward Lear and others that raise smiles of recognition and discussion of rhyme, rhythm and the scene conjured up.  This one, ”Silver’ by Walter de la Mare, was new to us and we all enjoyed it. At the time of an almost full moon, the slivery effect on the garden is gorgeous and captured perfectly here..

Silver

Slowly, silently, now the moon
Walks the night in her silver shoon;
This way, and that, she peers, and sees
Silver fruit upon silver trees;
One by one the casements catch
Her beams beneath the silvery thatch;
Couched in his kennel, like a log,
With paws of silver sleeps the dog;
From their shadowy cote the white breasts peep
Of doves in silver feathered sleep
A harvest mouse goes scampering by,
With silver claws, and silver eye;
And moveless fish in the water gleam,
By silver reeds in a silver stream.

A Posy and Two Poems

 One of the joys of visiting our Dear Friend Ti, is sharing favourite poems and remembering lines together of poems that we both learned by heart many years ago.  It will be her 104th birthday in a couple of weeks and she remembers more of the lines than I do.    Here is the garden posy that we took for her today and two of the poems we shared and talked about.

Sea Fever by John Masefield

I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking,
And a gray mist on the sea’s face, and a gray dawn breaking.

I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull’s way and the whale’s way, where the wind’s like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick’s over.

I love this poem and when living in South Yorkshire, has a lovely poster of the poem and the sea in my office.

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

The Woodman, Robert Frost and News

1   No photos today as I haven’t left the house, being full of cold. Something arrived across the ether though to cheer me up and that is this beautiful painting by the Mother of a young friend of mine. I love the detail, the ordinariness of the woodman bending over to tie his shoelaces and the colour in the trees. It really is very beautiful and Lorraine’s Mum a very talented artist.

2  Another friend commented that the painting reminded him of a Robert Frost poem ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’. Even though there is no snow, I can see why.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark, and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

3    I have the date for my Total Hip Replacement. It may surprise you that I find that a beautiful thing but it is because it is on 29th December 2014 so I can start the New Year with my new hip and in no time at all will be all-singing and dancing again!  Watch this space!

Peace, Robert Frost Poem and Winter Solstice

1   This delightful card arrived this morning from my cousin, S. It was designed by a primary school child and spreads the message beautifully.  I wish you all and all your loved ones a happy, peaceful and love-filled festive season and New Year.

2   One of my favourite poets, Robert Frost, wrote this poem, ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening’.  Until today, I had always thought he must have written it on 21st December, the darkest day of the year. Here, you can hear the poet reading his own poem and hear the story of how he was inspired to write it one mid-summer day!

3   Today we have celebrated the Winter Solstice. From tomorrow the days will start getting longer. I took a photo at dawn and another at sunset to mark the day and we went to our friends’ new woodland where they are creating a stone circle to start a new tradition. G had placed the first stone at sunrise and he and the lovely Mr S set the sunset stone in place and we all sang ‘May this stone be filled with love and harmony’, new words to this song with which we started our concert in Truro Cathedral last week.  Click on any image for a bigger picture.

and just come in from a young friend, Natalie – “Tonight’s triple whammy! At the exact time as winter solstice, the #iss passes over the UK while the astronauts do a space walk!”  Brilliant! Thanks, Natalie.

Wise Words, A Poem and A Flower

1   A good friend sent this on Facebook. Well said!

Dust if you must! from Shelagh

‘Dust if you must’ from Shelagh, thank you – a woman after my own heart!

2   One of my favourite books is Poem for the Day and the poem for today, 30th September, is one I particularly like.

Raindrops, Truro Leats and Shopping (and Robert Frost)

1   Raindrop like diamonds on a spider’s web.

Raindrops

2   Since I was a little girl, I’ve loved the leats in Truro, the gutters where the river flows through the city and today, in the rain, they were really flowing.

3   Shopping! I love shopping and went to my favourite shops –  the kitchen shop, the wool shop and, unusually for me , a clothes shop and  today I bought a scarf! I love scarves!

Beautiful cup cake papers

Multi-coloured wool with which to knit Sally-boots

Tiny birds on my new scarf- a woodpecker, a thrush and others I’m not sure of but it is beautiful!

and for good measure, this beautiful poem which I have been talking to another blogger,  Don, about this afternoon.

The Road Not Taken

And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could

And, finally, a message to some lovely likers – I love to visit the blogs of those who have been kind enough to read and like one of my posts but sometimes the Gravatar leads nowhere. I learned from another blogger about the importance of putting your blog address on as a link otherwise you can’t be found so please, if you want to be liked back, do put your link up. Thank you!
