Beetle With Bike, Birds and Double Bass

1. Driving to Norfolk today we passed a lovely black VW Beetle ( my favourite car – mine is duck egg blue) with a bicycle on the back. Oh, yes!

2. The mist covered each valley and when we stopped to change drivers, I caught some black birds in a misty tree.

3. We took a break in John Lewis in Bristol but it was totally packed! There was a three piece band playing as we arrived but they were due for a break. I love the scroll at the top of this resting instrument.

Bright Lights, Use This Day Well and A Rainy Day

1   It is such a grey day today so I thought some crazy bright lights might be just the thing. I took this photo in the middle of the night as we were landing in Los Angeles on our way from Maui, Hawaii to Atlanta, Georgia.

2   I love this way of reminding us to use our time on this beautiful planet the best we can.

3    Day 4 of the black and white photo challenge – through a rain-lashed window to a palm tree on the side of the Penryn River, where for the first time ever, I saw white topped waves. Click on the photo and zoom in and you can see the waves on this usually calm river.

Photo Challenge 2, Knitting and Hugs Aplenty and a P.S.

1   I am enjoying the challenge of B&W photography and playing happily with both that and colour. Today’s rainbow needed colour but the horses in the misty field pleases me in monochrome, much more atmospheric.

2   I have finished the cardigan for our six year old Granddaughter in Barcelona. Compared with the baby clothes I usually knit, it seems huge!

3    This came my way today and I thought it would be good to share it with you all. Make sure you give all the hugs you can – and get them all back too!

P.S.  Philae has landed on the comet 300million miles away and it has been on its way for more than 10 years! What a wonderful achievement and the best thing of all? It is a co-operative venture.  As my  friend, Alex Autin says, ” This adventure has been 25 years in the making, 10 years in space, the combined efforts of 30 countries……. and with a lot of big time excitement yet to come!”

Photo Challenge, Buzzard and Armistice Day Poem

1   I have been challenged today to try my hand at black and white photography so today’s photos have almost all been in B&W with some interesting results. Not being able to use colour as I usually do, it became all the more important to concentrate on form and texture. I love how the Passion Flower shows all its beautiful detail in monochrome. I have been surprised! Thank you, David.

2   While I was out in the garden finding subjects to photograph, Mr S alerted me to a buzzard in the back field. I’d be very interested to know which of the two photos you prefer – colour or black and white.  Click on either for detail.

3    The poem “For the Fallen” has been used around the world today, Armistice Day, to remember those lost in war. I heard today on the radio that it is also used in Australia on Anzac Day. It is read every sunset at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

As to how it came to be written, Laurence Binyon, the poet who was on holiday in Cornwall at the time, said, “I was set down, out of doors, on a cliff in Polzeath, Cornwall. The stanza “They Shall Grow Not Old” was written first and dictated the rhythmical movement of the whole poem” – See more here

Street Flowers, Convolvulus and Monochrome Grasses

1   There are so many beautiful hanging baskets in our small town, adding colour up and down the streets. The flowers inside and outside the opticians caught my eye.

2   There are striking white flowers on the Convolvulus all along the paths.

3    On the way up from town I liked the way the grasses were backlit by the sky. I took this photo in colour but the rather lovely effect is almost monochrome.
