Making, Roses and A Poem

Oldest LiveWire and I have spent much of the day making one of her Christmas presents, a wooden jewellery box that needed construction and painting. It is a present from her Aunt, Uncle and Cousin in Norfolk.  N is remarkably careful and attentive to detail and all the construction is done. Tomorrow she will paint and decorate it when all the glue is thoroughly dry.

It is lovely to see yellow roses blooming.

New Year Resolve  by May Sarton

The time has come

To stop allowing the clutter

To clutter my mind

Like dirty snow,

Shove it off and find

Clear time, clear water.
Time for a change,

Let silence in like a cat

Who has sat at my door

Neither wild nor strange

Hoping for food from my store

And shivering on the mat.
Let silence in.

She will rarely mew,

She will sleep on my bed

And all I have ever been

Either false or true

Will live again in my head.
For it is now or not

As old age silts the stream,

To shove away the clutter,

To untie every knot,

To take the time to dream,

To come back to still water.

I really  do need to clear the clutter!

Sculpture, Leaving Barcelona and Polyphant

Home again tonight. Here are  a charming sculpture, the take off and a sign to the village in Cornwall, Polyphant,  the name of which made us laugh as children. I must take the turning some day and see what the village is really like.

Day Out in Barcelona – Now with Photos

What a wonderful day we have had today! Into Barcelona on the train and down La Rambla with all the crowds and such a buzz! We went into another amazing market,  Mercat de Sant Josep, where the displays of fruit were so beautiful, each fig wrapped in a leaf before being put on display, small bunches of cherries likewise and Star fruit and Papaya displayed cut in half and looking irresistible. Click on any photo for a larger picture.

We discovered a Miro mosaic on the pavement, a dragon in the air and parrots in the palm trees in Placa Reial – magic. We had delicious tapas for lunch in the same square and then wandered the alleys of the old town coming across very talented buskers giving much pleasure to so many passersby.

Our next treat for the senses was Palau de la Musica Catalana, the only concert hall in Europe lit by natural light and completed in 1908. The stained glass dome of the sun surrounded by singers is breathtakingly beautiful, the mosaics fabulous and a worthy Catalan celebration of musicians of all types and from all over the world. We were treated to a short organ recital while we sat in the gallery surrounded by beauty. Look for the photos to be posted when we return home. WordPress for iPad won’t let me post pictures but now I’m home and can show you a bit of the beauty of Barcelona.

and two more shots of Barcelona.

Canovelles Sunday Market in Pictures

We spent the morning at the best market I have ever seen, in Canovelles – fabulous range of goods, huge numbers of shoppers and delightful smells from all sort of stalls all squeezed  into the streets between the buildings and going on for street after street. La Diada Nacional de Catalunya, Castellers and Arrival – Now With Video and Photos

1.  September 11th was a very special day for Catalunya, the tri-centenary of 1714,  so the streets were full of people in red or yellow t- shirts as they prepared for the huge demonstration for independence in Barcelona.

2.  We went by train to the small town of Llinars de Valles to watch the Castellers, the human towers, which were breathtaking and scary as tiny tots climbed the human tower to the very top and gave a wave. There will be photos, I promise!

3.  Grandbaby N arrived here with her Mum after a very long series of planes and trains from Senegal and all is well.

15/9/2014
Here is a link to my You tube video of the human tower. Watching the tiny tots scramble to the top was a sweaty-hands experience and I love how they slither back down again.  Just look at how they tuck their toes anywhere to get leverage and watch the faces of the little ones as they reach the bottom!  The chap who goes to join the base at the last minute and walks towards the camera at the end is Tino whose English was brilliant as he explained the whole process to me. Each team took the centre stage in turn and made the tower and  I loved how all the others came together to strengthen the base so that everybody was part of this human endeavour, all in it together. True community.

Family Outing, Book Buying and Remembering

1.   Walking into Granollers this morning with our beautiful new Grandbaby between us holding our hands must be one of my special joys this year.I felt so proud and just a bit tearful with happiness!

2.  The bookshop was a delight as we started N’s little library of simple books in Catalan to help her as she starts learning Catalan. Her mother tongue  is Wolof but she has been learning in French at school in Senegal and is beginning to speak English at home. She already understands a lot of what we say. It will be very sad to leave her tomorrow, so soon. If only the Visa had been granted as expected a month ago we would have had this whole week with her. As it is, our one day has been a beautiful day.   One of the books is ‘The Three Little Pigs’ or in Catalan, ‘Els Tres Porquets’.  Funnily enough, I have been finding that my French has been useful in communicating here.

3.  We have placed three tributes to children killed in Gaza as part of the I Remember the Children campaign, here in Granollers. Photos to follow as per all of the last week as WordPress on iPad does not allow me to post photos.

A Day Out in Granollers

Grannyairs is how to pronounce the name of this town where D&A live. We had an easy day, wandering the streets, listening to street musicians,  people watching – always one of my favourite occupations – and shopping for books and creative bits and pieces for Grandbaby N when she comes to live here. D took us to a Catalonian restaurant, Cala Sila, for lunch and we discovered the most delicious dessert, Crema Catalana – again, photos to follow.

There was a fabulous thunderstorm and I managed to get some lightning shots- look for them next week too! Supper was a delightful surprise as D brought a good friend, Larrick Ebanks,  home and we had a most enjoyable evening. Larick is in the music business and had some brilliant stories to tell. His label  Distinctive Rhythms & Under Ground Sounds is taking off!
