Breakfast, Bees and Lettuces

1   We met some lovely friends for breakfast this morning at Johnny’s in Hayle and thoroughly enjoyed our catch-up and our delicious meals. G had the American pancakes with mixed fruit and it looked fabulous! The Vegetarian Full English Breakfasts were also scrumptious. Click here and here for other posts about Johnny’s.

3    Our lettuces are still flourishing and I just love the depth and the contrasts of the colours of the leaves.  They taste good too!

Breakfast in Piccadilly, Royal Academy and Picnic in the Park 14th July

1. We saw the Greatest Rock and Roll Band In The World ( The Rolling Stones!) in Hyde Park yesterday, stayed overnight in a hotel in Covent Garden and had breakfast in a lovely cafe on Piccadilly as we watched the 10K run go by.

2. From there we went to see The Summer Exhibition at The Royal Academy, a real treat. I loved this ‘Enebriated Owl’.

Suffragettes, Beach Walk and Suffragette Garden

1  After a happy morning immersing ourselves in the history of Suffragettes, in particular, the March in 1913 from Cornwall up to Hyde Park and A Suffragette Diary, we enjoyed a splendid lunch, mussels for C and Asparagus in Parma ham for me!

3   My Suffragette garden, honouring my Great Grandmother and all those imprisoned in Holloway and force fed in their fight to gain the vote for women,  is looking splendid in today’s sunshine – white and purple tulips, white narcissi and purple and white pansies.

Lunch, Falmouth Docks and Spring Flowers

1   The family spent the morning at The Maritime Museum and we met them for lunch at The Gylly Cafe where it was, sadly, much too cold to go onto the beach.

2   Looking over the docks from Castle Drive was, as always, fascinating. We spotted the Dutch Brig, Mercedes with its tall masts in the distance. The photo of the ship in full sail is by David Barnicoat on 30th March.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Lunchtime, Bees and Planting

1    Beautiful warm sunshine took us outside today and our first lunch in the garden this year – a simple one of sun-warmed tomatoes and home-made guacamole with melba toasts followed by sweet clementines.

2    Bees were also enjoying the sunshine and the Spring flowers.

3    We’ve also done our first plantings – two varieties of shallots and a big Birch tree, something the lovely Mr S has hankered over for years and has at last achieved.

Birthday, ‘Gravy’ and Courtney Pine

1   Birthday breakfast for the lovely Mr S with our croissants kept warm in the beautiful Tree of Life bread-warmer.

2   Thence to Truro for some bookshop browsing and dinner at ‘Gravy’  where we had the most delicious pre-theatre dinner. We hadn’t been there before but we’ll certainly go again. It is a very welcoming place with imaginative and well cooked food, ‘deliciously uncomplicated’ as they say themselves.

Mr S started with crab cakes with a watercress salad and I had meltingly soft gnocchi tossed with spinach, and chili oil, topped with tomato concasse and parmesan shavings – both starters beautifully presented and truly scrumptious.

Mr S then had Sea Bass served on oven roasted vegetables and new potatoes with a romesco sauce which he found very tasty.    I had the Supreme of Cornish chicken which was stuffed with wild mushrooms, onion and thyme,  oven baked and served with dauphinoise potato, chantenay carrots and a red wine and shallot sauce. That, too, looked a picture and was delicious with every flavour discernible, truly a treat, which, since it was for a birthday, was most appropriate!  We had a very good bottle of Merlot with all this, were served beautifully in lovely surroundings and would highly recommend a vist to any of my readers who live in Cornwall!

3   We followed dinner with an amazing concert – Courtney Pine on the saxophone and playing a new instrument he called a Ewi – and Electronic Wind Instrument which he had just been given by the makers on his tour of Japan and  with which he was experimenting. Its range was unbelievable and the sound amazing!  I have to confess that some of the wackier pieces didn’t appeal but overall it was a very enjoyable evening. Courtney Pine is such a genuine and warm individual who really appreciates his audience.

Christmas Tree Hat, Lecture Lunch, and All Dressed Up

1   I finished, I think, the Christmas Tree hat for Grand-baby T. What do you think? Does it need more decoration, some sequins perhaps, some other coloured stitched baubles? Please advise!

Christmas Tree hat for T

2  I went with my good friend M to a lecture lunch at Trelissick today. The lunch was delicious, the lecture about Cornish customs at Christmas fascinating, and spending time with my friend just lovely.

3   Tonight I was all dressed up (best American long dress in green and black and my gold Doc Martens, the ones that gave rise to my nickname by the pupils at school of Goldenboots) and ready to go and it all went pear-shaped. The lovely Mr Smith stepped in and suggested we go out for a meal instead to take my mind off things so we did. We’ve just returned, all dressed up, and, as it turned out, we did have somewhere to go!

20th October – School Slogan, Peacocks on Pylons and Royal Dining

1. There were lots of school parties visiting Humayun’s Tomb. On the back of the polo shirts the Indian youngsters were wearing were the words ” Learn Work Play Think Live” which I think are brilliant words!

2. As we were on the five hour drive from Delhi to Agra, we went though miles and miles of similar countryside. We were delighted to see so many peacocks, many of them perching on pylons. Mr S was lucky enough to see one flying!

3. Dinner tonight was Royal Dining! There were 10 small dishes to share, (we chose the vegetarian option) each absolutely delicious – indeed, a mouth watering feast.

19th October – Warmth, Friendliness and Magic

1. The warmth of the sun as we stepped off the plane in Delhi at 8.30 local time.

2. The warmth and friendliness of the people, so many smiling and greeting us and wanting to take my photo. We think possibly they find blonde curls interesting! They were really pleased that we wanted to take their photos too.

3. A wonderful meal in the Indian restaurant in the hotel. My dish was beautifully flavoured without heat. Mr S chose something spicier but it was very hot. The lovely chef came out and took the dish away, did some magic on it and it came back perfectly spiced. The waiter gave Mr S a magic something to sip which immediately took the heat out of his mouth!
