Seed Pods and Lollipops

There are seed pods all over the garden and they are all very beautiful in very different ways.

I read about Banana Lollipops recently and am making a supply for the arrival of the Lives Wires at the weekend.

New Baby, Cornish Cream Tea and Truro’s Flowers

We have a baby foal in the back field. We think he must have been born last night or even this morning while we were out as he is still a bit wobbly. Just look at his long legs and his beautiful perky ears. His Mum is staying very close whenever he takes a step away from her.DSCN4086 (1)

I loved the knitted strawberries on this cream tea display in a bakery in Truro.

The hanging flower baskets in Truro are fabulous again this year. Every corner turned shows more beautiful planting. These are in front of the Cathedral. A big thank you to the people who plant and look after these gorgeous displays.

Sign, Front Door and Front Garden

Cornish pasties for lunch are a treat especially from Bray’s and Kay’s in Redruth where we saw this sign.

What a grand front entrance this is. I love the brick arch and the decorated pillars.DSCN4058Someone knows how to make the best of a small space with bright Sunflowers and an Apple tree full of fruit. Delightful.DSCN4059

Baby Bird, Kindness and Romance

Only a short walk today and only a quick view of this little bird which we think is a Robin as he had a bright breast that we saw only briefly as he hopped off under the hedge.DSCN4049

These words came my way the other day. Kindness must be the most important quality of any human being. When I first told my parents that I had fallen in love, their first question was, “Is he kind?” Ah, kindness

For those of you  with romance in your hearts and those of you who have been following my posts about the marvellous Man Engine, the following is a true story.  The instigator of the whole fantastical adventure with a mission to tell everyone of the history of Cornish mining chose the end of last event to propose to his girlfriend and the Man Engine went down on one knee! Isn’t that just perfect?! This photo was taken by Mike Newman.

Moth, A Rally and Dogs

As we were going out this afternoon, this little moth, as yet unidentified, was on our doormat.

Well, that was a rousing and inspiring rally with Jeremy Corbyn! There were six excellent speakers before him and then he said all that we needed to hear.

There were some beautiful Spaniels near us and a Poodle enjoying the water as we left Heartlands with hope in our hearts.

Penzance, Soap Box Derby and The Man Engine

It was Man Engine Day in Penzance today so off we went by train. The morning kicked off with a fabulous Miners’ Cart Soap Box Derby which was enormous fun. We had Tartiflette for lunch from one of the street food stalls (delicious!) and then a walk around Penzance enjoying music and dance along the way before returning to Market Jew Street to watch the Man Engine Ceremony, this time along with 18,000 other people! Click on any photo in the Gallery for detail.

Penryn, Flowers and Glass

I was in Penryn today for a haircut and on my walk along I saw this delightful little ‘planter’ on the back of a car! What a quirky and brilliant idea!DSCN3765

Just outside the hairdresser’s is this stone planter, full of colour.DSCN3767

Just up the road is a glass shop where there are always the most beautiful creations that I covet. Today there was a sale! I bought a gorgeous little vase in plain and purple glass and have filled it with Marguerites and Nigella from the garden. The artist is Rosie Sutcliffe who is the daughter of Malcolm Sutcliffe whose gallery it is.DSCN3773

Mural, Poppy and Rose

As we were leaving Falmouth last night after our friend Sue’s Book Launch of her ‘Walks in the Footsteps of Winston Graham’s Poldark’, I tried to take a photo of a mural and loved the somewhat surreal result.

DSCN3756

We are looking forward to doing these walks around Cornwall.

Sue's book

We love our frilly poppies.

There is a single rose today, long after the first flush. They smell gorgeous too.DSCN3761

The Man Engine in Redruth

What an exhilarating spectacle to witness! The Man Engine, on his journey through Cornwall, called in at Redruth today and was greeted by singers and an enormous crowd despite the Cornish mist, which actually seemed quite appropriate.  Here he is at full height, 10.5 meters. Even at rest he is the size of a double decker bus. The slide show below will give you a sense of his rising above the crowd. He can still be seen at various sites as he works his way West through the mining areas of Cornwall. Check out his journey by clicking here.

CORNISH MINING

Our mining culture shaped your world…

Kernow: the horn-shaped granite kingdom of Cornwall thrusts itself out into the Atlantic Ocean. We are a tiny 0.02% of the planet’s surface yet beneath our rocky shores can be found samples of more than 90% of all mineral species ever identified! Millions of years in the making, the geology of Cornwall is unique. This unbelievable geological treasure (Copper, Tin, Arsenic, Lead, Zinc, Silver, etc) has powered the Cornish people’s endeavour through over 4000 years of mining history: innovation, triumph and heartbreak.

In July 2006 the Cornish mining landscape was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This recognition puts our engine houses, miners’ cottages, grand gardens and miles of labyrinthine underground tunnels on a par with international treasures like Machu Picchu, the Taj Mahal and the Great Wall of China.

The Man Engine project celebrates the ‘Tinth’ anniversary of our World Heritage status as well as the successes and the struggles of the real people whose lives shaped the Cornish Mining Story.
