Friends, Garden and A Foal

My brother and I have known P since he was about eight years old and his wife, A, for many, many years too and today they came for lunch and it was yet another happy catching up session.  It has been another beautiful day so we have been in the garden enjoying the warmth, the flowers and the horses in the back field. We have just spotted a gangly white foal with them that we didn’t notice yesterday. Click on any photo in the gallery for detail.

Cliffs, Thistle and Rocks

Our eldest daughter who lives in Exeter is with us this weekend to see M and they have all spent all day catching up. We went off to Chapelporth for high tide this evening in the Cornish mist and had a good walk up to Wheal Coates. Sadly the cloud cover is too great for us to see tonight’s super moon.  Click on any photo in the gallery for detail of the rocks that I found built into the wall of Wheal Coates or the sea.

Newlyn, Mousehole, Lamorna and Porthcurno

Come with us as we take my brother around this fascinating part of Cornwall. Click on any photo for detail. Mousehole, by the way, is pronounced Mowzle!
Here is the Newlyn gallery.

Mousehole was completely parked up so this one was taken from the moving car!

Lamorna Valley is one of my favourite places, just breathtakingly beautiful and the water in the cove so clear and lovely.

Porthcurno must be the most beautiful beach in Cornwall, completely unspoilt by anything commercial, soft golden sand and the clearest of aquamarine seas – and to cap it all, the beautiful Minack Theatre built into the cliffs.

3   We went up to Carn Brea Castle this afternoon. Both the South Coast and the North coast seas can be seen from here on a clear day. I love how the building has great big rocks as part of it.

Jellyfish, Swans and Engine Houses

1   We spent the morning photographing the places we had lived in and around Perranporth this morning and also had a lovely time on the beach.  There were dozens of pretty jellyfish in the sands and in the little pools left by the outgoing tide. I’m not sure that they would be fun to meet in the water but I would love to know their names.

2   On the beach near Chapel Rock and in the freshwater stream that runs from the hills into the sea we came across two adult swans with seven cygnets.  I love how the wind blew the feathers on one of the parents and, less obviously, on the cygnets.

3   We spent the afternoon photographing! This time we went in search of our industrial heritage, the relics of tin mining that are all over Cornwall, the wonderful structures that housed the beam engines that pumped the water out of the tin and copper mines. I will do a whole post devoted to them but here is the most beautiful and elegant of them all, Killifreth, Hawke’s Shaft Pumping Engine House.

Nostalgia, Weather Vane and Garden

1   Today, M and I have been to all the houses we lived in in Truro – four. That’s five of our homes photographed so far – four more to do around Perranporth tomorrow. Look for the post later when all our homes will be featured!  What a happy time we are having sharing memories  – and how different some of those memories are!

2    Behind one of them I spotted a delightful weather vane of a cat and a mouse.

3   Our garden was looking particularly pleasing from the new terrace, an angle we have not been able to appreciate before.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Contrast 2

I love the contrast here of the little vase of flowers in the huge brick arch. I wonder who though to put the flowers there…..

I took this photo in January 2009. Sadly, I have no record of exactly where we were though we visited London and Brighton that week. If anyone can help, I would be delighted.

Gwennap Church Lych Gate, Sign and Rose

1   My brother and I started our family history pilgrimage today and went to Gwennap Church and Churchyard where the Martin stone that inspired Dad’s first novel, can be found.  The Lychgate is mentioned in the book, Jeremy Visick. The cross stitched kneelers in the Church were very beautiful and I give you a few here to enjoy.  Click on any photo for detail.

2   On the path as we left the Churchyard was this tiny shiny bit of evidence of a wedding at the weekend.

Congratulations!

3   The next part of our journey was to find the first house we lived in when we first came to live in Cornwall when I was 6 and M, my brother, was 11. This beautiful rose was growing nearby. More of the houses in another post.

Rock Pool, Stone Cairn and Thrift

1   We’ve spent the evening at Chapelporth and found something delicately beautiful and purple floating in a rock pool.

2   Someone had built a little cairn out of lovely beach pebbles. This photo was taken from ground level with the lovely Mr S and my brother as tiny figures far away behind the stones.

3   Walking up to Wheal Coates, the thrift flowers have faded but their seed heads looked gorgeous against the evening sun and with the blue/white waves crashing below.

Knitting, Lavender and A Blue House

1   In Penzance this morning, it amused me to see the Ice-cream seller knitting quite a complicated pattern while waiting for customers.

2   We were on a fascinating Guided walk with Anna through Penzance and it wasn’t easy to stop for photos. This little lavender container caught my eye at one of our stops.

3   Another eye catcher was the beautiful blue of a house up what used to be the main thoroughfare of Penzance.
