Big Garden Birdwatch

This weekend is the Big Garden Birdwatch where people all over the country spend an hour watching the birds in their garden or in a nearby park over three days 26-28th January.  We then count the maximum number of each species seen at any one time. It was extremely windy today and we didn’t see as many birds as usual so I will find some time tomorrow and send the better count in. We did see  some Chaffinches sitting on the Kalette plants, one Robin ground feeding, and 11 Goldfinches all at once at the feeders!

Bird Watching, Pancake Day and Crêpes Suzettes

There has been a great deal of bird activity in the garden today though they flew away into the trees each time there was a hail shower. There were Goldfinches, Green Finches;  a Robin; Blue Tits and Great Tits; Long Tail Tits and just one Nut-hatch. The day of The Big Bird Watch there wasn’t a bird in sight!   Click on any photo to see the birds more clearly.

It’s Pancake Day and we started with Savoury Pancakes stuffed with turkey in a tasty peppery sauce. Later this evening we will have our Crêpes Suzettes which we love!

Goldfinches and White Flowers

The white flowers in the garden look their best in early and evening light. There are Cosmos, Japanese Anemones and Clematis with a flash of Fuchsia. The Goldfinches are eating the sunflower hearts rather than the Niger seeds at the moment, just two here but we have had eight or nine at once which is lovely to see.

Goldfinches, Love and Lasagne

1   More and more Goldfinches are coming to feed each morning. This photo was taken from indoors and a long way away. You may have to click and zoom to find all six if this lovely family.

Special Twins, Goldfinches and Pan Pattern

1   Our beautiful twins were born on different days 36 years ago. Here, in this link, there are two mums each with their babies born on different days, different months and different years!

2   The Goldfinches are back! The sun is shining today but we have another hoolie promised tomorrow. Let’s hope no more damage occurs to the coast. The photo was taken from indoors on a long zoom so it isn’t good but it does show some of the dozen or so that were visiting today.

Goldfinches, Gift and Rainbow Vegetables (and Cor Serenata)

1   I managed to catch a couple of Goldfinches at the feeder this morning.

2   Today I have posted off a copy of one of my Dad’s books, ‘Moonglow’, to Cor Serenata, the Welsh choir who visited us last August, as a small thank you present for such a lovely weekend. I’ve only just realised that I didn’t post about the concert! See below for a gallery.

Garden Birds, Doorway and Memories

1   The birds are back! There was an enormous crowd of Long Tailed Tits taking turns at the feeder today, in skittish mood and impossible to photograph. There were also Goldfinches and Great Tits. It’s lovely to have them all back again.

2  We went back to Penzance today, albeit briefly, and this open doorway was very inviting but we were in a hurry…..  Next time.

3    We went past a tree with a purple ribbon tied around it so I stepped over the grass to find out what it was all about. I have never before seen a plaque so worded and I found it very moving.

Memories

My Mum would have loved this blog. She had such a lovely positive attitude to everything and today, her birthday, is Bonfire Night. Mum loved that everyone celebrated her birthday with her!

Texting, Birdwatching, Knitting Toolkit and A Bonus

1   The American branch of the family, my younger brother and my sister-in-law, are staying in St Mawes and we’ve had fun today texting making arrangements to meet up tomorrow, the skies being leaden again today! I’d love to say it’s been beautiful being so quiet but the truth is it’s too quiet and I’m missing everybody so much! The house has been so full of laughter and chatter for a whole week!

2    Being so quiet and, truth to tell, not busy enough, we have had time to notice the birds and my favourites, the Long Tailed Tits, have turned up today. I love it that they live in several generational family groups and at one point we saw ten. At the same time, the Goldfinches, a Blue Tit and a Great Tit were at the feeder. Beautiful!

3   This afternoon I read on  http://agujasblog.com/ about the tools we knitters carry about with us for knitting, was inspired to carry on with my current project (hoodies for both the Grandchildren) and to take a photo of my tool kit which was my Granny’s. It gives me enormous pleasure to know that she and my Mum both used these things before me. Thank you, Veronica.

4   Bonus Beautiful thing!    The sun came out this evening and we went down to Chapelporth to blow away the cobwebs. It was so beautiful and did my spirit much good –  lots of flowers, crashing waves in a turquoise sea and the magnificent Wheal Coates engine house on the cliff.

Goldfinches, Trek to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar and The Inglehearts

1  Many goldfinches were here at the Nyger seed today. Where were they yesterday when we were counting?!

2  Lucy arrived home, tired but glowing after her trek-training on Dartmoor. They walked 15 miles along cliffs, rivers and woodland. She has another 10 days before setting off on the Trek to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar.

3  A couple, whose wedding ceremony I am conducting later this year, came to listen to The Inglehearts’ rehearsal tonight. They like us!
