Veggie Bags and Veggies

I did all my volunteering at home last week and for another hour today, sewing two more of the bags that Roots uses rather than bags for the weekly veggie deliveries.

When I arrived today, I was amazed at the growth of the vegetables (and the flowers) since I was last there. My job today was sowing two trays of Spring Onions. Enjoy the gallery.

Guest Blogger back again!

I am back! This is my first full day in Cornwall as we got back yesterday at 10 pm! In the morning we went to visit the allotment to replant a tiny tomato plant, protect the growing vegetables and scatter some seeds to create a flower bed!

We found some beautiful flowers in other people’s allotments. Their colours made it finally feel like spring – I missed those bursts of colour and patterns so it was great to see some dancing in the sun!

Later on, we had some delicious, classic, fish and chips. I noticed the gorgeously artistic napkin holders made out of different coloured beads which is something I hadn’t seen before but I thought it was really cool and now I think I’m going to have to find some of my own. Although I think they’re one of a kind!

Love, Working and Dessert

It’s Valentine’s Day and I send all my readers love.

We’ve been up at Community Roots again, pricking out and mulching. Enjoy the gallery.

We had a lovely Valentine’s dinner tonight and Pears Poached in Red Wine with Star Anise and Cinnamon were our scrumptious dessert.

Sage, Tie Dye and Sunset

At Community Roots today we prepared Willow whips for planting and then I worked with P and G to take cuttings from the rather tired sage plant while the lovely Mr S worked on other jobs.

In November we put elastic bands on the veg bags so that they could be tie dyed. Today we undid them and this is the one I worked on.

We caught the sunset, the new moon and Venus in one shot this evening.

Planting, Pizzas and Angel Wings

Fabulous day today as the volunteers at Community Roots planted trees and shrubs as windbreaks to protect the site from salty winds and later shared a delicious pizza lunch. Do click through the photos to see the captions. Some of the photos were taken by other volunteers and are here with permission.

Later in the afternoon, I cut wings for ten more Angels for Ukraine, tomorrow  I  will file all the rough edges and foil later in the week.

Fungus, Lunch and Harvest

Loved this very delicate fungus growing at Community Roots on Volunteer Tuesday. I have tried to identify it but had no luck. https://www.wildfooduk.com/mushroom-guide/.

Lunch was a delicious spread of salads all picked from the gardens.

The squash harvest is wonderful! This is just half of it.

Wise Words, Special Fabric and Cake

I read this yesterday and it seemed so perfect to me in these strange and unsettling times.

“My grandmother once gave me a tip:
In difficult times, you move forward in small steps.
Do what you have to do, but little by little.
Don’t think about the future, or what may happen tomorrow.
Wash the dishes.
Remove the dust.
Write a letter.
Make a soup.
You see?
You are advancing step by step.
Take a step and stop.
Rest a little.
Praise yourself.
Take another step.
Then another.
You won’t notice, but your steps will grow more and more.
And the time will come when you can think about the future without crying.” ~          Elena Mikhalkova

Cornwall Scrubs delivered some new Seasalt fabric for me yesterday. Seasalt, a Cornish company,  have been amazing in donating metres of beautiful fabric for making bags and scrub caps. Today it has been washed and is drying on the Victorian pulley rack that I inherited from my Mum and tomorrow I can start my next pieces. Our Chocolate Crunch treat is helping us through the days. This is the third trayful I have made since we started self-isolating 8 weeks ago……….

Tulip, Leaf and Sewing

I’ve had a very quiet day today, buoyed up by the love of friends and family. Here is a tulip, photo taken late afternoon and glowing.

The Corkscrew Hazel we planted to mark our friend’s 100th birthday almost a year ago is coming into leaf.

I was featured on the Cornwall Scrubs page!
“One of our volunteers explained why she was sewing for Cornwall Scrubs. Sally gave a clear reminder as to the sacrifice the NHS staff are making for us.
💙
“I have a young friend who is a Nurse. She and her husband, also a Nurse, have taken the huge decision to take their two boys to live with their grandparents so that they don’t bring an infection home”
💙
So while I know we will miss our families and friends over Easter please remember that “we will be together again.”

Sunflower, Weeds and A Romanesco

I was singing with friends this morning and as we left J pointed out the serendipitous Sunflower that has been planted by the birds next to a tree that has died.

It’ll be Redruth’s Monthly Market Day tomorrow so I went along to do my bit in weeding the courtyard. There were lots of laughs to be had as we cleared away the weeds from the cobbles. I took a Before photo of a small patch but was so exhausted by the end of the hour that I forgot to take the after photo!

On the way home, I bought a Romanesco to have with our Moussaka tonight.

Cornwall Rising – A Million Stories of Sanctuary

What an incredibly moving, informative and inspiring day we have had, hearing from ‘ordinary’ Cornish people who are doing extraordinary work both here and abroad to ease the plight of those who have had to leave their homes in Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia and other places where life is unimaginably hard.

Our own St Piran was a refugee made welcome here and we, those who live in this beautiful county, want to help and are helping in Lesvos, in Calais and in Cornwall, each in her own way and all volunteers.  Here follows a gallery of the day, photos taken from the back of the hall of the projection on the wall.
