Sky Kiss, Beach Walk and Bonfire Party

While I was making breakfast this morning the lovely Mr S saw a sky kiss in the almost blue sky and took this photo for me.

We walked on the beach this afternoon, the beach being almost empty but dozens of surfers in the water. I asked one of them why there were so many here today, were the waves good and he beamed, saying, “The best we’ve had in weeks!”

Bonfire party night at the allotment this evening, soup and bread, a wonderful bonfire and piggybacking on the town display from our advantage point at the top of the allotment plots.

I had a Happy Anniversary message from WordPress. I started my blog 13 years ago!

Crops and Colour at the Lottie

We picked the last of our raspberries, 180g,  which pleased us greatly and they are now in the oven to become Apple and Raspberry Crisp using Nigel Slater’s recipe.

As I walked around the plots, I was delighted to see so many flowers at the end of October.

Squash, Gladiolus and Pear

It’s Tuesday, it’s Roots day. I helped to harvest squash and chillies today.

Yesterday I picked the last Gladiolus and brought it home, all in bud. Now in the warmth of the kitchen it has bloomed.

Look how pretty the slice of pear is.

Concert Success, Raspberries and Dessert

Last night’s concert was a success in so many ways. As I wrote last night, the audience loved us but perhaps even better was the generosity of everyone there. We were collecting for our two charities, ShelterBox and our local food bank, CPR.  We collected £800 though tickets and raffles!  We also asked everyone to bring a contribution for the food bank and when taken to the centre there were over two trollies full!

Thanks to Richard for the photo.

I collected 250g of Autumn fruiting raspberries from our allotment on Sunday on the same day that Nigel Slater published a delicious sounding recipe, Raspberry and Apple Crisp. It was delicious!

Chard, Begonia and Seaweed

I forgot to show you the wonderful colours of the Rainbow Chard growing at Roots yesterday.

We still have blooms in the garden. Here’s one of the Begonias.

This is Swanpool Beach where we have been today to collect bags of seaweed to put on the beds at the allotment. It has a remarkable beneficial effect, keeping the weeds down and feeding the soil over the winter months. We were pretty tired by the time we’d collected, tipped out and raked it out and I forgot to get a photo. Maybe tomorrow. .

Tiles, Yellow Harvest and Circus

Going from the car park into town today, we noticed some new artwork, a collection of lovely handmade tiles on the wall of the Ope. .

Apart from the raspberries which just keep on producing, I think we are coming to the end of our harvesting at the allotment. There were dozens of tiny golden tomatoes ( Tom Clementine) and lots of bright yellow marigolds to bring home today.

Early this evening we went to the circus, NoFit State Circus: Bamboo in the Fairmeadow car park, another in the week long Harbour Festival of International Theatre that has been playing in town.  It was absolutely magical –  funny, clever, with breath holding moments and a joy to behold here in Redruth. My photos really cannot do justice. If you are local, they are on again tomorrow. Wrap up warm and enjoy the show. .

Scary moments towards the end

Even More Sewing, Raspberries and Baking

The sewing team have been at it again and the boat is nearly full. There’s some finishing off but we’re nearly there.

The lovely Mr S harvested another big pile of raspberries today from the allotment. Some we ate at lunchtime and some I baked into a Raspberry Meringue Cake – delicious.

Onions, Shallots and A Poem

Our son left for Barcelona this morning, a three day drive for him. LiveWires 5 and 6 will be delighted to have him home again. We’ve had two delightful and very busy weeks of family visiting and now it’s very quiet here.

After putting the onions and second crop of shallots to cure, covering them each time it rained and then letting the sun, wind and daylight get to them, at last they are all  plaited and hung or the ones with short stems are gathered in the trug.

I was wondering if there were any poems about onions and then I remembered the quirky love poem, Valentine by Carol Ann Duffy that I used to read with my teenage exam classes and which went down very well.

Not a red rose or a satin heart.

I give you an onion.
It is a moon wrapped in brown paper.
It promises light
like the careful undressing of love.

Here.
It will blind you with tears
like a lover.
It will make your reflection
a wobbling photo of grief.

I am trying to be truthful.

Not a cute card or a kissogram.

I give you an onion.
Its fierce kiss will stay on your lips,
possessive and faithful
as we are,
for as long as we are.

Take it.
Its platinum loops shrink to a wedding-ring,
if you like.

Lethal.
Its scent will cling to your fingers,
cling to your knife.

Dinner and A Poem

After another morning surfing with the surf school and an afternoon resting after their exertions in a rather wild sea, the most delicious dinner was cooked for us by LiveWire 2 (15 years old) this evening – Chicken in a special secret recipe sauce with silky smooth mash and Tenderstem broccoli and using home-grown shallots from our allotment.
