Moon, Narcissi and Arches

Last night’s moon, one after the full moon, was still wondrous.

Coming back from Chapel Porth on Sunday I bought some narcissi from a bucket in someone’s garden in St Agnes. They smell wonderful as they have opened.

The best thing about our visit to the Hall for Cornwall this evening, was the lovely old architecture, in particular, the repeated arches.

Goodbye, Last Sunflower and A Song

Unloading all the luggage from the truck ready to catch the train

Our last Sunflower brought in from the garden

My choir sang ‘Love Will Carry Me’ and I put it here for our  Ukrainian friends, their families, their friends and their country.

It’s very quiet at our house tonight.  Bunker Cabaret will next be performed on October 14th at The Point in Eastleigh.

P.S. I up-dated yesterday’s post with some photos.

Busy Day – Beach, Lunch and Farewell Party

more tomorrow! 🙂

A wonderful day was had by all – walking on Chapelporth Beach, cave exploring, swimming for the brave, and general rejuvenation of the spirit.

The lovely people at the Chapelporth Beach Cafe very kindly treated our Ukrainian friends to a delicious lunch of Croques Monsieur followed by the inimitable and scrumptious ice cream, Robin’s Hedgehog. If you have never had one of these wicked treats, they are made up of Cornish ice cream slathered in Cornish cream and dipped in roasted hazlenuts. You can see by their faces how much these were appreciated.

Our farewell party was full of good company, a wonderful shared feast, lots of wine and even more singing. Our Ukrainians sang for us and we for them and together we all sang ‘You Are My Sunshine’ which they had learned last week when they visited my choir. That, and the last twelve days, have filled us all with love and beautiful memories.

Berries, Lighthouse and Last Show

I hadn’t realised that Lily of the Valley has berries, bright red and beautiful but very poisonous , I discovered on googling.

Such a beautiful day today and our young friends busy so we went off to enjoy the waves at Godrevy. We have never seen the place so packed with people! I think it must have been featured in one of the many programmes about Cornwall on tv!

It was the last show tonight and it was just as wonderful. A couple of days ago I emailed Spotlight South West about Hooligan Art Community and, as a result,  they went to see the rehearsal yesterday. Sadly, the clip from the tv programme is not available tonight.

Leaf, Cutter and Pie

Beautiful Autumn leaves are falling all over town and this lovely one caught my eye.

I was reminded the other day of a very useful kitchen utensil that belonged to my Granny. When rolled over pastry it makes slightly oval circles. They are too small for tarts so I decide to use them to top a pie for this evening.

A Poem, A Feather and A Performance

It’s National Poetry Day and the theme is the environment. However, given all the news around at the moment, I wanted to share this song of hope with you all.

“I’ve Learned to Sing a Song of Hope” by Georgia Douglas Johnson

A feather landed on my purple and white petunias that with their green leaves make the colours of the Suffragettes. The raindrops made it even more special.

Tonight we went to see the performance of Bunker Cabaret, written and performed by our young Ukrainian friends, Hooligan Art Community. It was wonderful, so very moving, a kaleidoscope of dance, drama and song that touched every member of the audience. What a brilliant team they are! If you live in Southhampton, they are coming your way next week; if in Edinburgh, in a couple of weeks. If you get the chance, do see them.

Thank you to Sue for the photo.

The poem above is for Mirra. I had chosen it before the show and then tonight realised the serendipity in that choice. For you, Mirra, with love.

Horton, Hearts and A Baby Blanket

Last time we visited our lovely 103 year old friend she asked where my love of elephants had begun. I said my Daddy reading Rudyard Kipling’s story of How the Elephant Got His Trunk might well be part of it. Later that evening I remembered Horton the Elephant, a book by Dr Seuss first published in 1940  which formed an important part of story time when I was little. Not having a copy any longer, I bought a used one from Ebay and it was delivered today. I realise that some of my personal philosophy also came from Horton – to be kind, to be true to my word and, with our children and with those I taught, that I only said what I meant.

“I meant what I said
And I said what I meant….”

The low Autumn sun made a shadow on the ceiling of the glass heart that we have hanging in our front window. I made it in March to show love and support for Ukraine.

We’ve had a quiet afternoon and I finished off the baby rug for the Grandbaby of a friend, in fact the new daughter of the young couple whose wedding ceremony I performed at the beach last year.

Cookies, A Walk on the Beach and Bella Ciao

All the cookies I made last week have gone so I made another batch for our young friends this morning.

Today’s fun was on the beach at Portreath, swimming, walking and exploring caves.

After that walk and swim everyone came back to ours for a Lasagne supper.

Serendipitously, this video turned up today, from a 2014 choir session. We sang it last week at choir for our Ukrainian friends in support of their resistance.

October Blooms

I try to take photos of everything in flower at the start of the month and this I did a few days ago but we’ve been very busy with our lovely Ukrainian visitors. They have been rehearsing today so now I shall show you some of the 33 different plants in flower on October 1st.

Bill’s Attic, A Strawberry and Borscht

A visit to Bill’s Attic was our trip with our visitors this morning, a visit to the most eclectic collection of artefacts and memorabilia that used to be in his attic next door but which is  now curated in a local arts complex called Krowji. The sunlight through the coloured windows made a magical carpet from which to experience this ‘museum’ of curiosities.

We showed our friends the allotments today and we were amazed to find a strawberry. It smelt delicious and tasted even better.

Tonight we had our first experience of Ukrainian hospitality with beautifully made Borscht and vodka, gherkins, garlic and lemons accompanied by singing and laughing – another wonderful evening with these lovely young people. They start rehearsals tomorrow for the show at the end of the week.
