Welcome, Dawn and A Jackdaw

Our young guests have been working on their production, Bunker Cabaret, today and have given me permission to use their photo of our welcome dinner on Wednesday evening. The show will be in Redruth next week, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Welcome dinner at ours

The red/pink dawn presaged the very wet and windy day “Red sky in the morning, mariner’s warning.” The lovely Mr Smith took this photo for me on his way to bring me a cup of tea.

I made Blueberry Pancakes for breakfast but realised when the first batch were in that I had forgotten the bicarbonate of soda as they were flat and heavy. The second batch were lovely after I added the bicarb and it interacted with the buttermilk to make the fluffiest pancakes ever. The Jackdaws were not bothered and had finished them off in no time!

Rest and Recuperation

Our new friends came to choir with me today. We sang our Ukrainian song, Nohyalita, for them and they sang for us. It was just brilliant and everyone was moved.

Afterwards we took them to the sea at Gyllyngvase, had lunch at the Gylly Cafe and  they walked on the beach to enjoy the peace and the sounds and smells of the sea. One of them went for a swim! They all had fun.

Leaves, Ukraine Flag and Sunflowers

Lovely Autumn leaves in the carpark when we went shopping today

We met our Ukrainian guests at the station with a flag which we then put in the dining room ready for their welcome dinner.

Sue-next-door who is hosting two of the six, came round, having cooked the veg to go with the welcome dinner, and brought some sunflowers round for the table, beautiful.

A Poem

Some time ago I found this poem, “First Day of War” by Ludmila Khersonsky, that was published  in The New Yorker,   and it has come back into my head as we prepare to welcome some young Ukrainians into our home.  They are part of a theatre group who will be performing in Redruth at the end of next week. They are from Kyiv and need some rest and recuperation before they get into rehearsals and performances so we are going to show them some of the beauty of Cornwall and of our everyday lives.

Sunflower and A Pot

The fierce wind in the night blew down one of our beautiful Sunflowers so here it is in a Jane Hamlyn pot, one of my favourites for its quirkiness.

Flowers, Micro Space and A Poster

We made a lovely bunch of white flowers from the garden for our visit to our Dear friend,T. She loved them.

One of the lovely independent shops in Redruth, Make A Mends, has a little box outside that is a Micro Space for very small exhibitions of local makers. When I called in yesterday to offer some fabric I no longer need, they invited me to put some of my glass in there. There is a Like O Meter on the box and passersby who like what they see can turn a little handle to register their like!..

Inside the shop there is a poster/ statement of intent – not sure what to call it…… It pleased me.

Japanese Anemone, Cerinthe and Apples

I love having lots of white in the garden in the autumn as it picks up the evening light so well. Somehow, among our white Japanese Anemones, a small clump of pink have arrived.

The self seeded Cerinthe major are flowering. You really have to hunt to find the flowers hiding under the leaves.

We were given some delicious home grown Russet apples by our lovely friend,M, who knows they are my favourite.

Autumn Equinox, Creature and A Sky Kiss

It’s the Autumn Equinox today and I have kindly been given permission to use this beautifully golden leafed  photograph taken by Kris Meaden in Penlee Park in Penzance.

We still have a couple of baby brassicas in the poly tunnel at the allotment and today we had a little visitor. Do any of you lovely readers know what it is? I left it alone so I’m hoping its favourite food isn’t young Kale!

While at the allotment, the sky showed us this delight full trail pattern.

National Elephant Appreciation Day

NATIONAL ELEPHANT APPRECIATION DAY – September 22

I have loved elephants for as long as I can remember and  have a large collection of carved elephants. We’ve seen herds of beautiful  live ones on our many visits to South Africa.  I shared this love with my Dear Friend Angie who died last year just before her birthday, a day we also shared.   I really miss her.

My tiniest elephant, carved into a glass cube

My biggest elephant, bought at an antiques fair many years ago. He is as tall as my knees.

My Elephant family, representing me and the lovely Mr S, our eldest daughter, our second daughter and our twins, a son and a daughter. The tiny one is the little person we never met but who will always be one of us.

And I wear the ring that Angie left me every day.

International Day of Peace and Peggy Seeger

September 21st is the United Nations Day of Peace. You can read more about its origins and this year’s theme here.

End racism

One of Peggy Seeger’s songs that I love is, “How I long for Peace.”  I sing it loudly in the car and feel every word deeply.

I wish for peace for all of you and those you love, my Dear Readers.
