White Horse, Poem and Kitten

We always look out for the White Horse in the hills at Westbury and today , through the mist, the sun was on it.

From time to time the London Underground publishes poems which appear along with the adverts. Today we spotted this one.

The boy who sits on bins becomes

a chough, admires the sight of his red beak

Against the wall

                            He goes nicking coins

Across the city, flies back and roosts

In the chimney stack above our house.

At dawn he climbs down and walks to school

With rooftop-torn jeans and fingerless gloves

The colour of smoke on a winter morning

In his pockets: a half pack of matches,

a lighter, a week’s worth of razor blades.

Imogen Cassels

It has been hard to get a photo of our Daughter’s beautiful kittens. Here is Boris.

Story Books, Coffee Pot and Raindrops

You may have gathered that my parents were auction aficionados – I have mentioned a number of their bargain buys before. These books came in a job lot and became mine and I just loved them. I think some of my love of Egypt came from reading these stories and some from my visits to the Truro Museum.

Our first foreign holiday with our children, teenagers all, was to Egypt and there we bought this lovely plate and coffee pot and six tiny coffee cups.

Sending Love, Pumpkin Soup and Fireworks

This ancient Sanskrit poem has been a source of strength for me through a number of very difficult times – when one of our baby twins was desperately ill and through various other family traumas that many of us have to deal with from time to time.

Look to this day
for it is life
the very life of life.
In its brief course lie all
the realities and truths of existence
the joy of growth
the splendour of action
the glory of power.
For yesterday is but a memory
And tomorrow is only a vision.
But today well lived
makes every yesterday a memory
of happiness
and every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well, therefore, to this day….

I give it to you again here in the hope that it will help anyone else out there who needs to make the most of each and every day to create those memories of happiness and to make ‘every tomorrow a vision of hope.’

Our lovely neighbour brought us half a pumpkin yesterday and today I have made a delicious Pumpkin Soup served with Spiced Pumpkin Seeds – scrumptious! Thanks, Sue.

On Saturday evening we went into Redruth to see the fire works and they were just fabulous!  Enjoy the gallery.I wish I could bring you the sounds and the smells as well!  Click on any photo to get the full effect.

Three Lovely Plates

We inherited these three beautiful plates – the pretty orange tree one, commemorating the birth of a Dutch Princess, Julianna, from a Dutch Uncle on my other half’s side of the family, the Gwennap Church one from my folks who lived in Sunny Corner near Gwennap and the Susie Cooper one from my Granny.

Brightening Up A November Day

It has been such a grey, wet and windy day here with no venturing outside so I thought it time to share the photos of the garden taken on November 1st – and there are still splashes of colour all over the garden. Click on any photo to see the beautiful detail.

Sea Spray, Swimmers and Shelter

Another glorious afternoon, warm and very windy and the sea at Gyllyngvase was rougher than we have ever seen it with waves crashing against the sea wall and glinting in the sunshine.

I love this shelter along Cliff Road in Falmouth. Click to see the detail of the anchor cut-outs on the shutters and the delightful weather vane.

Seed Heads, Bonfire Night and Treasures

The seed heads on the Fennel are lovely against the sky.

Today, Bonfire Night in Great Britain,  is my Mum’s birthday. As a little girl, she thought everyone was celebrating her birthday with bonfires and fireworks. She was born in 1914, 101 years ago.

Here I show you another section of my print tray with two more of the little brass owls, some more of my keys, a stripy piece of stone from The Grand Canyon,  a grey stone from a Cornish beach and a lump of lava from Hawaii. The dark shiny stone was collected by my Mum and Dad many, many years ago. They thought it looked like a statue of the Madonna and Child.  The little house with the words, Live the life you love, we bought in New England a couple of years ago.  Four more sections to go…….

What a lovely way to remind someone to whom you have lent a book where it needs to be returned.

Yesterday’s baking proved to be a success. We had Baked Pumpkin Cheesecake with Caramelised Pumpkin Seeds for lunch today. I had made a very small one for us to taste as well as the big one for Thanksgiving and that is now in the freezer.

Mr S planted the last of our Spring bulbs today, some Narcissi and some Tulips. We will look forward to the splashes of colour in a few months.
