0ne Hundred and Ten Years On

A hundred and ten years ago, seven women from Cornwall started their walk to Hyde Park in support of getting the vote for women. Ten years ago, some of us walked a little of the way to support their memory and today, another group, again led by Claire Ingleheart and Dreadnaught Southwest, walked from Lands End to St Just to commemorate the day.
In the Plen an Gwarry in St Just the walkers met with another hundred people who had come along to sing to honour those women and the thousands that joined them in a rally in Hyde Park. We all sang Oxygen and it was extremely moving as the seven names of those women were remembered.  I was so involved I didn’t get many photos but here is a taster and one of me taken by a friend as we were leaving after the most uplifting community event.

Here is a recording of the Ingleheart Singers singing the wonderful rousing song, Oxygen,  in Truro Cathedral some time ago. I had just had my hip replaced and was in the audience able to record though I couldn’t sing on that occasion.

Fathers’ Day

Father’s Day started with cards and flowers and breakfast in the garden accompanied by birdsong, the wren being the star of the show.

Over the last few months an historian has been in touch as he puts together a history of the school in Doncaster, Oswin Avenue Secondary School, where my Dad was Headteacher for four years before returning to Cornwall. I have sent him the following photos of my lovely Dad. The first two are photos Dad sent home to Mum while he was away in WW11, with his writing on the back.
The strangest coincidence came to light in our conversation yesterday as we discussed the final draft for the exhibition which will be in Doncaster Museum in the autumn. It turns out that the house we lived in, in Rectory Gardens, was also the home of said historian for 15 years !.

Craftivism, Festival and A Sky Kiss

I love my town! There are always interesting things to be joining in with! Today I went back to Kresen Kernow where my choirs sang Songs of Rebellion as part of the Rebellious Sounds event being organised by Dreadnaught South West. Today we were making badges to celebrate women. Of course, I chose to honour my Great Granny, the Suffragette. My badge isn’t quite finished but you can see the beginnings in the photo of the table where we were working. I’ll show you when I’ve found time to finish it.

As  we finished I went off to meet the lovely Mr S just up the road in St Rumon Gardens, as one of our favourite local and very lively bands, The Devil’s Hatband, was about to play as part of the town’s Murdoch Day Festival.   The town was buzzing!

I stepped to the front of the audience to catch the photos.

Later, I was  called out into our garden to see the sky kiss.

Mirror Glass and A Georgian Ball

I worked again with S today, patching a chin and a nose on one of the faces.

I’ll show you the finished faces next week.

Later, S came round to show us her costume for the Georgian Ball happening tonight in St Rumon’s Gardens. Doesn’t she look fabulous?! And then, the lovely Mr S gave her a lift into town.

Songs of Rebellion and Glass Work

Yesterday  my choirs performed in Redruth at Kresen Kernow, a beautiful building that used to be the old brewery and is now a library of all Cornish archives. We were there to celebrate .an exhibition of stories about women in the South West and to sing our songs of rebellion and those about Cornish women. It was brilliant! The audience loved us and gave us a standing ovation!

This afternoon I have been helping our lovely artist neighbour with a project she and her brother are making for a festival in Glasgow, huge mirror ball faces and I’ve been helping to cut the glass and fill in some repairs on the old heads.

Brilliant Day at Community Roots

What a lot of fun we had today with the team and the volunteers at Community Roots. It really is the best community for us both to be involved in.

Cookies for Ukraine

The recipe I used today to make biscuits for tomorrow’s coffee time at Roots suggested that a small toy could be pressed into each uncooked cookie to make them look more interesting.  I don’t have any small toys so used the badge we were given by M,  one of our lovely Ukrainian friends. The biscuits therefore celebrate Ukraine’s fightback and our Dear friends from the Hooligan Art Community.  We hope they will visit again before too long.

More Bags, New Tool and Crinodendron

A cloudy day today so it has been perfect for spending the day sewing. I’ve made two more veggie bags for Roots and made a small modification which I’m very pleased with. The really bright fabric on the left hand side is fabric from Senegal and I love it. .

The lovely Mr S has been working on replacing our bird feeder station which had rusted away. He called me to see his new magnetic spirit level in action.

Our Crinodendron, otherwise known as Lantern Tree,  is magnificent this year. The wind has blown lots of blooms down so I thought you should have a photo while it is still lovely. One of my blogging friends, Hey Jude,  posted a fascinating piece about her tree which I have saved for today to share with you. Do visit. Her photos are brilliant.

Crops, Marigold and New Potatoes

Our allotment is suddenly showing growth – onions, leeks, shallots, potatoes, mostly coming on well though our red onions are being rather slow.

I love the brightness of marigolds and we have the first in our pollination border.

We’ve had more of our new potatoes tonight with butter and mint – delicious!
