Poppy, Salad and Night Scented Stock

There was a beautiful poppy petal on the path as I went out to the shed.

Another delicious flowery salad today of broccoli, sun-dried tomatoes, allotment-grown cucumber (a gift from a neighbouring plot today), slivered almonds and borage flowers with a balsamic dressing.

The wonderfully perfumed Night Scented Stocks are now opening in the evenings and filling the path with loveliness. My Mum always grew these and so the scent brings her here into our garden. One of our daughters often woke at about ten in the evening  and her Dad, the lovely Mr S, used to take her out into the garden in her pjs to smell the ‘night flowers’ before taking her back to bed where she fell straight back to sleep – lovely memories. .

A Treasure, Wild Garden and A Card

Sorting out things in the shed the other day, we came across a tray of bits and pieces that we inherited from Mum’s shed. There were some marbles, various small tools and a screwdriver set. I used one of the screwdriver bits this morning to put up a hook in our allotment shed and thought as I did so,’The last hands to touch this were my Mum’s.’

We went shopping this afternoon, proper shopping for the first time in 15 months! Going past Truro Cathedral we liked the colourful wild garden with its rotten wood home for creatures.

A card arrived in the post from a friend who had read my most recent letter in The Guardian. As she wrote inside, she hoped  that my feminist brain would would appreciate the irony of this card. I do and I love it.

Barry Hines, Rainbow and Spring Border

It was with great sadness that I heard of the death of Barry Hines, the author of ‘A Kestrel for a Knave”. My copy is well thumbed and well loved and I have read it many, many times with classes of fifteen year olds who loved it as much as I did. The story spoke to my teenagers in Yorkshire and their eyes, like mine, would be full of tears when Billy finds that his beloved kestrel, Kes, has been murdered by his bullying big brother. If you have never read it, then I suggest you do. It is a remarkable piece of writing and made an excellent film, Kes, too.

My treasures in the print case were lit up by rainbows from my Rainbow Maker today and I managed to catch a moment when the rainbow passed over my three wise monkeys. In the same shot you will see a heart stone. I was given this by a complete stranger when shopping in a mall in America. She came up to me saying, ‘My name is Sally and I feel a connection between us. I would like to give you this heart in remembrance of our fleeting friendship.” We chatted for a few moments and then she was gone……

Three Wise Monkeys caught in a flash of rainbow. I like how one doesn’t want to smell the colours and the next seems almost blinded by the brightness!

There is also a half-crown from the year that we were married and a little Mevagissey fisherman (one of a pair) that my Dad gave me when I was five or six and I have treasured ever since.

It has been a glorious day and the border outside our kitchen is looking lovely.

Powder Bowl, Watering Can and Wood Burner

1   The decorating is all finished , the pictures are back on the walls and now the trinkets go back. As a child I always loved my Granny’s powder bowl with loose powder and a fluffy peachy powder-puff inside. She used to puff the powder on my cheeks and laugh and laugh when I sneezed!

2   I keep little  treasures in it rather than powder. This tiny silver watering can was also my Granny’s. When it is held up to the light,  six little black and white pictures of Morecambe can be seen.

3   It is a truly unpleasant day out there today. The storm glass is high and we have lit the wood burner. A cosy evening calls.

PS   Father Christmas is on the case re my camera. This tricky to use one will suffice until then…….

Teach Peace

Teach Peace  from Hippie Peace Freaks with thanks

1  I just want to say how much I loved teaching and teaching peace is surely the most important thing we could all do…….

2   This is a delightful combination of colour, music and creativity. (Photo not mine, sent to me via Fb.)

Creating makes me happy, be it cooking a meal for family or friends, knitting or sewing clothes for little people, writings of various sorts, designing in the garden, playing music …….

3   These are the powder colours which I bought from a beautiful girl in Varanasi, India, on our way back from watching the sun rise over The Ganges. She made lovely patterns on my hand with them before we negotiated a price and she told me how she was selling things to raise money for her school books. She then walked beside me protecting me from the traffic (cows, cars, Tuktuks, scooters, coaches and cycle rickshaws) until we reached our bus. A beautiful memory.

Weekly Photo Challenge – Resolved, Snowflake and Skeletal Leaf

1   This year I have resolved to keep my wool collection in a more organised fashion and for my birthday, the lovely Mr S bought me this compartmented display box in beautiful mango wood. Today, I have sorted all my bits and balls of wool and am very pleased with the result. Each one as I put it away is full of memories of what I knitted and for whom – it’s lovely!  Have a look at this post to see some of my projects http://mybeautfulthings.com/2013/01/04/weekly-photo-challenge-my-2012-in-pictures-a-year-of-knitting/Mango wood box

2   I’ve started knitting The Snowman’s Snowdog (it’s a bit tricky) but I love the way the ball of wool turned into a snowball as soon as I took off the wrapper!

3   The Schizophragma hydrangeoides, in the front garden, has the most beautiful skeletal flowers just barely hanging on its branches.
