Christmas Boxes, Tree and Hugs

You may have read a few days ago of the Christmas Boxes we have contributed to, to provide Christmas dinner in a box for the most impoverished families in Cornwall. Today, they have been collected from all over Cornwall and these are the words of the lovely, hardworking organisers.

“965 boxes donated – that’s something like £30,000 of food, helping around 5,000 people this Christmas.
That is awesome!
We are so proud of the people of Cornwall!!”

Isn’t that amazing? What generosity from one of the poorest areas of Europe!

The lovely Mr S put up our tree today. We’ll decorate it tomorrow.

I loved the idea of hugs being like jump start leads. Thank you so much to the makers, creatorsneverprosper.

Carn Brea Sunset, Moss and A Christmas Tree

There was a beautiful sunset this evening against which Carn Brea Castle and the Basset Monument were silhouetted.

Day Out in Bristol

What a lovely day we are having! Christmas is in full swing in the shops and the decorations are simple and lovely. The  red and green bottle brushes were very effective and the silver disc caught the light and threw it around. They hung the whole four floors of the shop.

The lights throughout the mall were also simple and very pleasing. I do like simple!

Geminids Meteor Shower, Baking and Light Tree

1   It was a beautiful clear night so just after midnight we went out into the garden, turning off the Light Tree, to look for the meteor shower. It was exciting to spot them, though only one at a time, not, for us, a shower! The lovely Mr S saw a green one but I missed it! Sorry, no photos but you can see some brilliant photos by clicking here.

2   I’ve made a couple of dozen mince-pies this afternoon while listening to the final episode of ‘The Once and Future King’ on BBC R4.

Wheal Coates, Waves and Switching on the Lights

1   It was a gloriously bright winter’s day and we took a walk up to Wheal Coates on the North Coast of Cornwall, starting from Chapel Porth. This is for Shelagh.

2    There was an off-shore wind catching the tops of the waves making long plumes of spray the length of each wave as it unfurled.

3   Our small town, Redruth, was absolutely stuffed with people this evening for the switching on of the Christmas lights, the children’s lantern parade and our singing of carols. It was so lovely to be part of community happiness.  Click on any photo for detail.

Gingerbread House, Gallery Day and Lights

1. We always try to have a Gallery Day when visiting family in London and on our way to the Royal Academy stopped for a coffee and a croissant in the Cafe Concerto where this beautiful Gingerbread house was the centrepiece of the shop window.

2. The exhibitions at the Royal Academy were so contrasting today. We started with a major retrospective of Anselm Keifer which was breathtaking. The works were huge and very disturbing in their subject matter, one from the attic series has stayed lodged in my mind. Sadly, photography was not allowed but you could look him up. The other exhibition was of the portraits of Giovanni Battista Moroni, a sixteenth century Italian artist whose paintings were incredibly beautiful. The way fabric on clothes flowed, the detail of the jewellery, the expressions on the faces were mesmerising and the way he painted hands, always holding something or marking a place in a book being read just caught my imagination. I loved especially the painting of The Widower with his hands around the shoulders of his two young daughters. there’s a story to be told there, I feel…….

3 The lights in Old Bond Street were peacocks and gorgeous. I was sorry we weren’t there late enough to see them in the dark.

For My Dad, Christmas Lights and A Simple Supper

1    A beautiful song was chosen by my sister for our Father’s funeral nine years ago. It is nine years ago today that he died in St John’s Hospice, Doncaster, where he was so incredibly well looked after for 17 days that he asked, “This is a wonderful hotel. Can I afford it?”  Today is the day that I play ‘The Ballad of Joe Hill‘ in remembrance of my much-missed and much-loved  Dad and today I have played Daisy’s choice as well, ‘Under a December Sky’ by Beth Nielson  Chapman and I give you a photo of today’s beautiful December sky to go with the lovely words and music.

Lights, Reflection and Pizza

1   We were in Truro again this evening and though I don’t put our own Christmas stuff up so early, the city was beginning to look lovely. I really like these delicate snowflakes which are in all the streets. I’ll show you more as we get closer to Christmas!

2   We went for  a meal out before going to the cinema to see Gravity. I loved the reflection of the wine glass and the red wind on the table.
