The Nutcracker and My Dad

Today Daughter no 2 and her daughter, LiveWire no 3 went to see The Nutcracker at The Royal Ballet and Opera House in London and this evening we have been to see the livestream of the same performance. It was wonderful and I love the idea that, despite being hundreds of miles apart, we have just shared the ballet experience together.

Today too, I remember my wonderful Dad who died on this day in 2004 after a very hard nine months and his final, even harder ,17 days in St John’s Hospice in Doncaster. where he, and I, were extremely well looked after with love and understanding.

Shoreline, Bows, Thirsty Dog and Bedruthan Steps

Today we watched our choirs singing – in the productions on Sennen and at Kynance next week, I will be a part of it all.

Leaving the beach and the choir having their picnics before the second performance, I spotted a new use for a sand spade.

After that very emotional performance, I felt the need for some sea and space so we went a few miles up the coast to Bedruthan Steps where we were blown about by the wind on the cliff tops.

Daffodils, Rooster and Choux Hearts

1 Yesterday, friends delivered a lovely bunch of Daffodils in the bud from my beautiful choir leader, Claire. Today they are open and very lovely. Thank you so much, Claire!

2 Last night we went to see Ballet Rambert performing one of our favourite ballets, Rooster, to the music of the Rolling Stones. It was brilliant as was the rest of the show.

3 It being Valentine’s Day, we have had a special meal tonight, the dessert being Choux pastry Hearts filled with Vanilla cream and topped with a chocolate ganache. They went down well!

The Extra Mile, Red Docs and Ballet Boyz

1 I took a very large envelope to the Post Office today, sending some of the Christmas Clings that Marilyn very kindly sent to me, to our Grandchildren. I asked if they had a ‘Please do not bend’ label but they didn’t. The woman behind the counter suggested that I add a piece of card to strengthen it all and so I said I would take it home, do that and come back tomorrow. ‘Just a minute,’ she said and disappeared into the back. She then spent the next 5 minutes or so undoing my package, fixing it up with a piece of card and resealing it! What a star!

2 I am so excited! I now have my red Doc Martens! Some of you will know I have been eyeing these for some time and today, there were some new ones in, in red leather rather than the patent and so I have some at last. I wore them out of the shop which reminded me of being little when we always took our old shoes home in the box and wore our new shoes home with such pride!

3 Tonight we went to The Hall for Cornwall to see The Ballet Boyz, an all male modern dance group. THe first dance was incredibly lovely showing off the beautiful male bodies; the second dance full of stylised violence and suppressed aggression and quite exhilarating.

Strawberry Jam, Visitors and Dance in the Gardens

1 I finished off the strawberry jam today – delicious!

2 We had some lovely visitors today! L and Choir-baby T are back in Cornwall for a week and spent a happy couple of hours with us this morning. T now has quite a lot of words and was able to ask for milk and to tell us what he was doing in the garden. He also says, “Cheese!” as soon as he sees the camera pointed in his direction!

3 This evening we went, with friends, to Trebah Gardens to watch The Venus Flower, a dance event performed all the way through the gardens down to the beach. It was a very beautiful production, full of energy and joy. Click on any photo in the gallery for an enlargement.
