Lovers’ Lane, Hedge and Planting

One of our routes to and from town can be along this lovely Lovers’ Lane.

Hedges all around are covered in Foxgloves, Pink Campions, Cow Parsley and something yellow!

We have had no luck with our squash this year, hardly any even germinated and those few that did were eaten by slugs. Happily, another allotmenteer has very kindly given us some beautiful plants which we have planted out today.

Kindness and Bird Watching

Our lovely friends turned up this afternoon with a beautiful bouquet of garden flowers and a delicious casserole for our dinner tonight which we have just enjoyed.

I’ve spent much of the afternoon sitting and watching the birds as they have hoovered up the crumbs of a couple of scones that were left over from last week’s cream tea. First there were the Jackdaws who filled up and flew off followed closely by a couple of Magpies.

Then there was a bit of a stand-off…..

And lastly the Pigeon made sure of some crumbs, lots of crumbs in fact!

The little birds didn’t get a look in but they were very busy at the feeders.

Snoopy, Iris and Squirrel

There’s another very clever postbox topper along our street. Snoopy has survived rain and gales and is clearly very well secured.

An Iris has sown itself among our Wallflowers and this year has several blooms. Irises collect the rain drops particularly well.

The lovely Mr S has hung one of the bird feeders on a long wire in order to outwit our visiting squirrel. It hasn’t worked though it did for about a week while the very intelligent creature worked out how to win. We always let it have some seeds and then open the door noisily to encourage it to leave.

I’m sorry I haven’t posted for a few days. Life and medical stuff took over but we are back, finding beautiful things every day. More of Tuscany to follow.

Road Sign, Lambs and A Poem

We were stopped at traffic lights on our way to Truro yesterday and I managed to get a photo of the very pleasing addition to the road sign before the lights changed. (I wasn’t driving!) I hope others have felt better after reading this too.

There were lambs in a field in the distance on the far side of Truro. There are no sheep in the field behind us this year so I am missing all the bouncy lambs..

It feels like the right day to give you this poem again. It speaks to me very clearly. I hope it does the same for you.

Mothers’ Day

A day for all mothers, all those who care with love for others.

I have been truly spoiled today! Daughter no 1 came for the day and we went out for lunch and had a lovely walk on the beach at Porthtowan.

A beautifully presented bouquet arrived from Daughter no 2 before I had showered this morning, delivered with a lovely message and all in purple, white and green, a reminder, if any of us need it, of our pride in our treasured history, my Great Granny being a suffragette.

Thanks KJ

And in a card that I opened at breakfast, some stunning earrings, in the same precious colours, that Daughter no 3 had had specially made for me!

Beautifully handmade by Tina

What perfectly lovely people our daughters are.

International Women’s Day

The following are from my post for International Women’s Day 2021 with notes from today.

I have today as on each March 8th taken a little posy to our friend next door for her wedding anniversary and in memory of her lovely husband.

Toady, the Guardian has devoted their letters page to all women correspondents. This was my letter in 2021.

And, as ever, a call out to all the women in my life, to my daughters and LiveWires, to my friends both in person and my blogging pals and to those who help to make my life better – love to you all.

ShelterBox, Swans and Alan Brownjohn

A representative from ShelterBox came to choir today to collect the money we raised from our gigs over 2023. It is always moving to be brought up to date with their activities. They are working with MAP to get help into Gaza. Thanks to Mandy for the photo.
The tide was in this morning as we were rehearsing and the swans are back. I loved the contrast of the white swan and the colourful reflections in the water.
The poet, novelist and humanist,  Alan Brownjohn, died last week so I thought I would share one of his poems,
The Director,  with you.  The format of the poem is four line stanzas but for some, irritating, reason, WordPress chooses to squash them all together. I hope this doesn’t spoil your enjoyment of this poem.
We get bored, we get restless. We feel there is more
Than merely existing – eating and drinking and dying,
The daily, the trivial round. We feel we must matter,
That somehow or other our presence in the world must count.
And then there are those with this urgent need for self-
Expression, the wish to put something out into the world,
To put down, for the record, what it was like to be them,
To be this self and no other and alive at this time.
Some find a medium, a skill with words, paint or stone,
(Though often enough they seem to mistake their need
To make for a gift to make something) while others remain
Frustrated, and find destructive ways of expression.
These are the difficult ones, the ones who can’t see
A possible pattern to things, order in all the disorder,
The sense of a journey, with somewhere, perhaps, to arrive,
The end, or the goal, which might justify it all.
So what can be done? It is tempting to preach and advise,
And point to the ways that others have found and followed,
The patterns which worked for them, the things which helped them through,
But that, of course, is exactly what they want to avoid.
So there really is nothing for it but kindness and patience.
Hoping, as always, that time will work its wonders,
That growing older may bring a kind of peace,
A slow-dawning recognition that things happen and pass.
He will be sorely missed.  But we will always have his poetry.
And an extra one for you today, February 29th, a new word, courtesy of my SIL Bissextile

Roasted Rainbow and Another Good Read

One of our favourite meals tonight, a rainbow of roasted vegetables with halloumi cheese – scrumptious!

Red Pepper, Sweet potato, Carrots, Yellow pepper, Broccoli, Red onion

My lovely book buddy, H,  brought me up another good read yesterday and I have just spent two days reading! I thought I would just read a page or two and then get back to the various things waiting for me but I haven’t been able to put it down!

If you haven’t read this, then I suggest you do. The story is quite remarkable, very moving and  is just chock-full of human kindness.

Daffodils, Cakes and AGM

When we arrived in Redruth in 2008, our lovely neighbour turned up with a jam jar full of local daffodils and joined us on the floor (furniture arriving the next day) to share our Chinese takeaway. Every year since, on the anniversary of our arrival, she has come round with daffodils. Just the best neighbour!

The cherries didn’t sink in the cake and the Victoria sponge was a huge success. As well as being my favourite, it is clearly loved by many.

It was the AGM of Community Roots this evening, a fascinating account of what is being achieved and what  hopes and plans there are for the future of the project. I share three of the slides here with you, apologies for the slight fuzziness.
