Gwennap Church Lych Gate, Sign and Rose

1   My brother and I started our family history pilgrimage today and went to Gwennap Church and Churchyard where the Martin stone that inspired Dad’s first novel, can be found.  The Lychgate is mentioned in the book, Jeremy Visick. The cross stitched kneelers in the Church were very beautiful and I give you a few here to enjoy.  Click on any photo for detail.

2   On the path as we left the Churchyard was this tiny shiny bit of evidence of a wedding at the weekend.

Congratulations!

Congratulations!

3   The next part of our journey was to find the first house we lived in when we first came to live in Cornwall when I was 6 and M, my brother, was 11. This beautiful rose was growing nearby. More of the houses in another post.

Knitting, Nao Roz Kites and Kneelers

1   I have done my first 100 cms piece for the 7 miles of knitting being done by supporters of Wool Against Weapons (See this post)  Now to sew all the ends in. I haven’t decided whether to do stripes in the next piece….

2   We joined a bunch of like-minded people today on the beach by St Michael’s Mount for a very special event, Fly Kites Not Drones, in honour of Nowruz, Afghanistan’s New Year.  There were kites of all shapes and sizes flown by children and adults of all ages. Voices for Creative Non-Violence UK is holding a weekend of solidarity with Afghans who will be facing uncertainty and the possibly of an escalation in conflict during the renegotiation of the international presence within Afghanistan. Our kite flying on the beach was a part of this. Here’s a gallery of photos to give you a flavour of the event. Click on any one for the detail.  I’d like to wish my readers in Afghanistan, and there are a few, a Happy New Year.

3   After the kite flying, we strolled about Marazion for a while and as the Church had a notice inviting anyone in during daylight hours (rare these days – many Churches, sadly, are locked when not in use) we had a look around and were both struck by the colourful beauty of the kneelers. Click on the photo to see the amazing stitch-work..

Bird Table, Peace Poem and Embroidered Bees

1   We’ve been looking for a new bird table for some time and yesterday found one we both liked. It has already attracted a couple of small visitors.

2   Amy Witting / Joan Levick wrote this evocative poem, Peace. I was delighted to learn that  this Australian writer chose the surname ‘Witting’ because of a promise she made to herself to never be ‘unwitting’, to always remain conscious of everything in her life – which is what I try to do here in my blog. I can’t put the whole poem here because of copyright but here’s the link so that you can read all ten lovely lines.

Peace

At the ship’s bow. It was my eye that drew
the perfect circle of blue meeting blue.
……………
……………….Stillness all around.
Only the perfect circle and the mast.
That moment knew no future and no past.

3   L gave me this beautiful embroidered little container but neither of us could think how I might use it. Then I thought – a jam jar of water and a bunch of Cornish daffodils so here they are!

Baby Footprints, St Andrew’s Church and Singing

1    L and Grand-baby B went home today after their all-too-short but beautiful visit.Grand-baby B left her footprints behind on the slate mantlepiece where she was standing to laugh at the baby in the mirror. You’ll have to look carefully! There are the toes from one foot and the heel from the other.

2   The Ingleheart Singers had our weekly rehearsal, not in the usual place but at St Andrew’s Church in Redruth this evening in preparation for our concert there with Cor Serenata, a visiting Welsh choir, on Saturday evening. (If you are local you can get tickets from me or from the Health Food Shop on Bond Street! It’ll be a cracking night!) The altar cloth is a delight with the Ark and the animals depicted in embroidery and collage and the acoustics are amazing.

3   It was just wonderful to be singing with The Inglehearts again after a month of summer holiday. I so miss singing when we have a break. This weekend is going to be full of happiness with singing from Friday to Sunday! Joy!

Clock, Three Wise Monkeys and Hungry Caterpillar

1   When I was doing the aforementioned Spring cleaning yesterday, I polished up this very old and lovely clock of my Granny’s. It just sits on the shelf in the kitchen stuck at 7.20. But, a beautiful thing happened yesterday. I tried winding it and reset the hands and it is working again!    It’s been going for 24 hours and is still ticking!

2   The miniature daffodils in my Wise Monkey planter are blooming even though crows and sparrows alike are stealing the coconut liner material for their nests!

Daffodils, Trapunto and A Simple Supper

1   The daffodils that I bought the other day are all open and very beautiful.

2   When we were in America  about 30 years ago, I bought some fabric to make into Trapunto panels. I still haven’t used them!  However, the technique has  stayed with me and I decided to use it on the baby blanket that I am making. I’ve been working on it all day, using stem stitch and chain stitch so that each segment of The Very Hungry Caterpillar is now padded and raised and looks brilliant! I am really pleased with it.

3    Embroidering all day called for a very simple supper! Chicken risotto with leeks and mushrooms with a spinach salad with balsamic dressing – delicious!

Tangerine Bird Treats, More Raindrops and Elf Coats – and My Staircase of Books

1   Inspired by something I read on a blog this morning http://enjoyingcreating.wordpress.com/ I got some half-dead fruit out of the compost and made these bird food treats to hang on our Christmas tree – which will be ‘planted’ outside as soon as it stops raining! I also made a pastry bird-seed cake in the hope  of both nourishing the birds and luring them closer to my camera!

3    These Avalon Elf Coats are the most beautiful bits of clothing I’ve ever come across!

4    And, at last, I have my book list for the staircase of books (but as my big brother said, it could be a different list tomorrow!)  I agree with Valerie that really I need the staircase in a lighthouse!

‘Under Milk Wood’  Dylan Thomas

Poems of Pablo Neruda

‘Othello’ Shakespeare (How can I choose just one play? Perhaps I should have ‘The Complete Works’ )

‘The Book Thief’  Marcus Zusak

‘Far From The Madding Crowd’  Thomas Hardy

‘Jeremy Visick’  David Wiseman  (my Dad!)

‘Kes’  Barry Hines

‘Sophie’s Choice’  William Stryron

‘Winnie-the-Pooh’  A A Milne

‘To Kill a Mockingbird’  Harper Lee

‘Rebecca’  Daphne Du Maurier

Do let me know what your choices would be and thank you to those who already have.

And to all my Australian readers – I hope you and yours are safe as we hear the news of the terrible fires sweeping across your country.

Sewing Box, Christmas Tree Hat and Dramatic Clouds

1   Yesterday’s post about Granny’s tablecloth brought some interesting comments, particularly telling me that it wasn’t tatting around the edge but Filet Crochet. This took me to Granny’s beautiful old sewing box to look more closely at the very fine metal crochet hooks which I think may have been used for this delicate work. I don’t know what each item in the box is used for so if you do, please tell me!

3    It’s been a dramatic weather day with squalls of hailstones followed by sunshine. I love the drama of this sky behind our house.
