A Poem, Weeding and Raspberries

A friend of our son’s. Deasy Bamford,  shared a poem she wrote yesterday and she has given me permission to share it with you. It touched me deeply.

by Deasy Bamford

We have volunteered a few times at The Ladder in town, painting the inside, helping with the planting of the garden at the back and today the volunteer force were called in again. There has been scaffolding up for a long, long time as the roof has been being repaired and weeds have had a field day! A whole bunch of people turned up and tidied everything up. I did one small patch and here are the before and after photos.

We picked the last raspberries from our allotment this afternoon.

Flag, Detail and A Poem

Collecting our bread order from our local bakery, I noticed that they are ready for Redruth’s International  Mining  and Pasty Festival this weekend, daffodils wrapped in the Cornish flag..

As we left the car park, I noticed  a bit of architectural detail I haven’t noticed before. It looks like two little houses up on the edge of the building.

The Irish poet Derek Mahon, once described as ‘a source of optimism and replenishment’, wrote this poem which I like very much. I tell myself, “Everything is going to be alright.”

Hanging Basket, Sweet Corn and Passion Flowers

I went into town for the first time in seven weeks this afternoon and loved the colour in the lamp-post baskets. I was there for the 4pm Redruth Resists Silent Vigil for Palestine and was heartened by how many drivers honked their horns and waved.

We have eaten our first crop of sweet corn this evening and it was absolutely delicious with a little salt and lots of butter.

There are still blooms on our Passion Flower and today I noticed we have a fruit! I don’t suppose it will ripen now the nights are drawing in but it’s pleasing anyway.

Family, Circus and Singing

Another lovely family day with Daughter no 3 joining us, and the family already with us, for the day. Lunch in the garden, a trip to the circus, my second to see the brilliant No Fit State Circus, and a breathtaking  time was had by all nine of us. Dinner was cooked for us by our son-in-law and then I went off to sing shanties with my choirs joined by LiveWire3 who has sung with the Suitcase Singers on each holiday here since she was five years old. It’s always a special joy to have T in the choir with me. The rest of the family came along to join the audience.

I’ve said it already but if you are local, don’t miss this treat on our doorstep. The circus is here until the end of the month and locals can get tickets for only £10! I wrote about my first visit here.

No Fit State Circus

I’m just home from a night at the circus seeing the show “Sabotage’ and what a spectacular  night! It was fabulous – like being at Cirque du Soleil but in a big top in Redruth. Audacious and exciting, touching and awe inspiring with a brilliant live band and the audience loved it. At times it was so exciting, I almost forgot to breathe!
If you live in Cornwall there’s a special discount and if you live in Redruth, an even bigger discount so get yourselves along you locals for an absolute treat of an evening. There will be more photos to follow as I’m being given some official ones but here’s the Big Top to entice you in. Here’s a link to their website..

Daughters, Sleeper and Supper

Last week our eldest Daughter came to look after us which was really lovely and this morning Daughter no 2 came in on the sleeper train and will be helping out this week.

Pride, Patches and A Challenge

After days and days of sunshine, today was properly damp which was brilliant for the garden but sad for Market Day and the Pride Party in the Park.  We did our usual Saturday foray into town for fruit, veg, coffee in our favourite coffee shop and a laugh with Make A Mends.

Pride bunting in the wind and rain. On a sunny day this courtyard is buzzing.

I donated a pretty top that I no longer wear to Make A Mends and they, in their inimitable fashion, have made it even prettier.

We met a lovely couple in HomeGround coffee shop, Heidi and Pete, who were at the start of their Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle ride. Should they read this, we wish them all the best on this adventure.

The lovely couple we met today at the start of their amazing cycle ride.

International Knit in Public Day

As it is Knit in Public Day, I took my latest piece into town and knitted in our regular and favourite coffee shop in town.

The Craft Collective had planned to knit outside but as you see from their sign, we had some heavy showers today so they retreated indoors.

I found this on an Fb page I follow – and send solidarity to all those out on protest today, knitting or not. I hope you have all been safe.

National Knit in Public Day falls on June 14th. Consider knitting at a local NO KINGS DAY RALLY! Nothing says pacifist like a group of knitters, knitting in public.

Murdoch Day in Redruth and A Cream Tea

Join me for Murdoch Day, a celebration honouring the legacy of William Murdoch, the pioneer behind the use of coal gas in lighting.    This year, we are ‘Celebrating 200 Years of the Railway’ as our Murdoch Day Festival theme.  This theme acknowledges Redruth’s rich industrial history and celebrates William Murdoch’s contribution to a bicentenary of innovation. I love seeing the parade and all the children’s art and creations.,

We shared a Cornish Cream Tea, jam first!

Carve – An Exhibition at 89 Redruth

Yesterday we went to another exhibition at the lovely small gallery in Redruth, 89. Last week I showed you a painted wooden snail, one of the teasers in the window before the exhibition opened.

The carvings were very beautiful but they were only part of the show. There were also paintings and quirky found objects so that the room was full of colour, of charm, of humour and ingenuity – a real pleasure to spend time there and to chat to the owner of the gallery. Here are a few photos but, if you are local, it’s really worth popping in. You’ll leave with a smile on your face. – such a variety of talent from the one anonymous artist.
