Easter Bonnets, Live Music and A Miniature

Today’s market was great fun – very busy, with brilliant live music and beautifully decorated Easter bonnets at the cake stall. My coffee cake sold out quickly. 🙂

One of the many attractive stall was selling little replicas of our town’s Tinners’ Hounds. I was concerned about the artist but was reassured that he has given permission for the lovely little 3D printed versions.

If you look carefully, up the garden, you can see our Welly Dog original, as well as the delightful miniature

A Very, Very Good Day!

Today, our eldest daughter has come to spend the day with us, the first time since lockdown – and what a day we’ve had. She arrived in her best car, an Audi A8,in glorious red to celebrate our day together.

We went down to Chapel Porth, a family favourite and almost had the beach to ourselves.

We bought Cornish pasties for lunch, of course, and after lunch sat in the sunshine in the garden enjoying each other’s company.

M, like me, has a passion for making and story telling – it runs in the family. She has made some lovely 3D pieces for us and this evening has made a new button for our loo. It was lost some years ago and today, M has 3D printed us a new part. She brought her 3D printer down especially to do this job and it has been fascinating to watch the whole process.

Above is the prototype starting to be printed and the final piece is below.

The only one like this in the world!

To celebrate further, I made a new recipe, Blueberry and Cream Cheese Crostata and it was truly delicious.

Daughter No 1 is the one who 3d printed the vase. here she is going to explain the Epicyclic Gears shown below.

This epicyclic gear set (also known as planetary gears) is 3D printed in one operation as a complete moving part. The term planetary comes from the inner gears (the planets) orbiting the central sun gear. This type of gear set is often used in automatic vehicle transmissions as it can handle large amounts of torque in a very compact form. The gear teeth are V shaped meaning they lock in place along the axis of the gear, so this widget does not come apart, nor could it be assembled from its individual component parts. It can only be created using 3D printing.
It is printed using Fused Deposition Modelling (FDM), as was the vase, and is made of Polylactic Acid plastic (PLA) – a biodegradable thermoplastic derived from natural resources such as corn starch or sugar cane. The lines visible on the surface of the widget are indicative of the path the print head took as it laid down a 0.4mm wide bead of molten plastic which fused together to form the completed widget. The component parts are printed with just enough clearance between themselves and their neighbouring part that the beads of plastic of each part do not fuse with those of the other parts, resulting in a working assembly of seven individual parts all printed together.
