Barley, Raindrops and A Horse

A different route for our walk today took us past a beautiful golden field of ripe barley.

We’d been dodging showers while working in the garden before our walk and had no rain while walking but the evidence of showers was held in a spider’s web, lovely sparkly diamonds.

This horse came straight over to the gate as we went by so we stopped for a chat. We wondered about the ankle boots – any of you Dear Readers know what they are and what for?

And for a treat, Sting with Fields of Gold. I love this and hope you do too.

And our women have just won UEFA Women’s Euro 2022!

Door Frame, Mincer and Bee

On our walk into town today we were amused to see how the door frame has been so carefully shaped to fit the old stone wall.

In the vintage store, Daisy Rain Vintage, where all sorts of treasures can be found, was this old mincer, enamelled and really rather lovely. The one we had at home was just a grey metal and I remember well making mince using it.  Any readers remember same?

The bees love our sunflowers on the allotment where I harvested enough beans for dinner, another courgette and a cucumber and all the shallots which I will plait up for storage tomorrow.

Church, Bottle Opener and Border

A lovely church tower in Breage.

I spotted this amusing  bottle opener on a van we parked next to today.

I’m loving our flower border at the allotment – lovely Night Scented stock that is particularly lovely when we go down in the evening to water. There are also Sunflowers which turn their faces to the sun throughout the day and Cosmos, Sweet peas and Verbena Lollipop.

Gladiolus, New Patch and Produce

We love our Gladioli.

The lovely Mr S has been working on this patch of garden for some time, first taking down the Pitisporum hedge that had outgrown us and our trimming abilities, replaced it with a curved picket fence, sowed new grass and planted some climbers to go along the fence and today, uncovered our sculpture and re-oiled it. You might just make out the sweetcorn plants behind the fence in the one of the raised beds, just to the left of the carved sculpture. So pleased with it all!

Homegrown leeks and purple beans stir fried to go with our locally made sausages this evening.

Bees, Twins and Crochet

We spent all morning at the allotment – harvesting onions, picking beans, planting some more squash and weeding, weeding and weeding! All the time, the bees were buzzing about and were about all we could hear.

We have twin Cosmos and twin onions! When going for breakfast the other day, I spotted a delightful post box topper on a roundabout in Truro but couldn’t get a good photo. M, who lives near the box, took this photo for me. I really love the wacky seagulls and octopus. Thanks, M.

Community Roots, Poly Tunnel and Harvesting

We visited Community Roots today, described as  “Community Supported Agriculture 🌱 Nature Friendly market garden. Food and friendships within our community” and it was all those things and more.

We expected just to be shown around to to see what was going on but it turned out to be the day for putting up a new poly tunnel and it seemed that extra hands would be useful so we stayed and helped. What a wonderful sense of satisfaction and camaraderie.

It was the day for harvesting the onions and some volunteers, aged  from 3 to 75,  were laying them all out to dry off in the sun.

Cucumber, Bees and A Spider

Our neighbours and friends are enjoying the cucumbers we are growing on the allotment, as are we!

The bees are loving the aliums.

Our golden rose, with pink tinges, is home to a pretty white spider.

Wheal Uny, Flower and Moth

Our walk around the back today dodging the showers was a purply/ pink one – lots of heather and Fireweed near Wheal Uny engine house, pink flowers on the brambles (blackberries to pick soon) and pink thistle flowers on one of which was a beautiful black and red moth, a day flying Burnet moth.

Redruth Pride, Fruit and Vegetables

Redruth Pride, Fruit and Vegetables

Our town was buzzing today for the Pride Parade, full of colour, live music  and happy vibes. The Flag roll-out was wonderful, all the way up Fore Street.

The fruit display for the parade at our fabulous greengrocery, GrowBox, was beautiful.

This afternoon I harvested dinner from the lottie – sweetheart cabbage, fine beans, purple teepee beans and yet more courgettes (enough now for another batch of soup). I’ll use the rhubarb tomorrow for Different Every Time Pud.

Street Draw 24 Redruth

Another fabulous bit of fun in our town, today joining Cobweb Tours as they led us around Redruth telling stories of the town’s history while people sketched whatever took their fancy on the tour. It was all part of Street Draw 24, raising awareness of of homelessness through a 24 hour drawing event from the streets of our town.

Here’s a gallery of some of the features of our town that might be missed if you aren’t looking. I did do a sketch though I am no artist.
