Mothers’ Day, Shears and A Castle

It was Mothers’ Day in America yesterday and my kid sister, who lives in Hawaii, posted a photo of our beautiful Mum who died in 1993 but is, of course, still much missed.

I started making masks today and the instructions suggested that I use pinking shears. Mine got taken for craft work many years ago but Mum’s are still in her sewing box where I am always finding haberdashery treasures. They look a bit rusty but they cut perfectly.

Our walk took us under Carn Brea today and I took this photo for the LiveWires who love going up there and scrambling on the rocks. In fact, the castle never was a ‘castle’ but a folly and later a hunting lodge.See here for the history.

Thank you, Dandelion Clocks and Ghost Town

A dear choir friend does a top-up shop for us each week and today we picked a purple, white and green posy from our garden for her to say Thank you. As well as getting the shopping items, just seeing this friendly smile and having a chat, two meters apart, of course, is such a tonic.

For our walk today, we chose to go through the park into town, thinking that we wouldn’t meet many people here on a Sunday. There were so many dandelion clocks in the park, I wished we had some little people with us to play with them.

Redruth was like a ghost town! Look carefully and you might spot the Welly Dogs, the very special art installation by David Kemp, in our town.

Dinner Out, Nemesia and Clematis

We went out for dinner tonight! We ordered from our local pub earlier in the week, collected from a totally safe table outside and enjoyed a wonderful dinner at home with the table beautifully set and us, dressed for dinner! The drive through the lush Cornish lanes was such a treat. We haven’t been down that lane for more than ten weeks.

I collected Nemesia and put them in a beautiful little Nicky pot to decorate the dining table. There are always flowers on the tables in the pub when we really do eat out.

The evening sunshine, where we sat out with a glass of wine, lit up the Nelly Moser Clematis.

Foxglove, An Engine House and Echium

Our walk today was late as we waited for. the rain to stop but the light was good. We often think of our LiveWires when we do this walk as they have enjoyed it with us many times when on holiday here. We have been watching the Foxgloves growing and today saw one just beginning to bloom.

The following photo is for J who, as mentioned, has enjoyed this walk with us and whom we hope will be on The Great Flat Lode with us again before too long. Can you see what’s in the distance, J?

It is Echium season and there are some wonderful examples in neighbours’ gardens. The bees, who love these blooms, can be heard before one even sees the plant.

Over a neighbour’s fence, 10-12feet tall!

Savoury Muffins, Iris and Nasturtium

I was asked by a friend if I knew any recipes that used up courgette as their on-line shop had given them two enormous ones. I remembered a recipe I made some time ago and had here on my blog so passed on the details. I was then inspired to make these tasty morsels again for us and here is today’s offering.

The irises we planted last year are opening. They are spectacular.

These nasturtiums have seeded themselves from last year’s plants.

Singing, Sharing and Horses

06 May

Zoom singing was fun again this morning. In the afternoon, a group of us shared Cakey Tea across another zoom. I made a tray of scones Dear J brought to us this morning and some homemade Blackberry and Apple Jam. Four more scrub caps started this afternoon and I am pooped!

Yesterday we followed a couple of horses up the lane.

A Birthday, A Bluebell and Finishing Touches

This time last year we were celebrating a 100th birthday on the beach. This year has been a quieter affair for Ti as we are all held at home and the weather has been very wet. We sent along some highly scented flowers and were happy to know that they were very well received by our Dear and precious friend.

There has been a downpour all night and most of the day. Catching raindrops in photos is one of my favourite things.

I have put the finishing touches to the scrub caps and they have been collected today. A lovely neighbour brought some Weleda hand cream sachets to go in with the caps this morning and last night I sewed in the ‘Homemade with love’ labels.

Three Trunk Tree, Hedgerow Flowers and Scrub Caps

We love this moss covered tree with its three trunks as we go up the lane to the Flat Lode Trail.

Cornish hedgerows are so lovely in Springtime.

I’ve sewn 24 buttons onto the scrub caps (for the wearers to attach their masks and so avoid the soreness that elastic can cause behind the ears) and they are now ready for collection.

Another Lane, Bluebells and Yeast Buns

We often walk along Church lane and love the big Oak Tree at the start of the lane.

Further along, just before we turn up to The Great Flat Lode, we noticed the blue in the fields below Carn Brea and realised that the farmer has mown very carefully around an enormous patch of Bluebells.

A lovely friend from choir does some top-up shopping for us and today turned up with our shopping and some delicious yeast buns that she had made this morning. We exchanged that for some Blueberry Streusel Cake that I had baked knowing that J would be here in the afternoon.

Another Lane, Bird Song and Sewing

We walked early today and it was absolutely delightful, flower filled lanes and sunshine and almost silent except for the beautiful bird song.

For a couple of hours this afternoon I sat in the sunshine, pinning and tacking the next six scrub caps. Machine sewing tomorrow and they’ll be almost ready for collection.
