Weekly Photo Challenge: My 2012 in Pictures – A Year In Cornwall

These are the photographs that I have had made into a calendar for my family who all live away from Cornwall – in Munich, Germany; in Atlanta, Georgia; in Volcano, Hawaii; in Warsaw, Poland; in Exeter, Devon; in North Finchley, London; in Barcelona, Spain; in Dakar, Senegal and in Chilla, Devon.

July 2012 – From St Mawes looking over the water to the St Anthony Lighthouse. The annual regatta was in full sail.

August 2012- Looking out to Restronguet Creek from the pontoon of The Pandora Inn.

September 2012 – Kynance Cove, a favourite place for the family for many years.

October – Coming back into Cornwall over the Brunel Bridge over the Tamar, after our holiday in India and Nepal

November 2012 – Looking towards St Ives from Hayle Towans

December 2012 Pill Creek , where we first lived when we moved to Cornwall from Birmingham when I was 6 years old. Is it any wonder I fell in love with the County?

Senegal 10th April – Certificate of No Impediment, Goree Island and Senegalese Art and Presents from Pap

1 We all went by taxi into noisy, crowded and hectic Dakar to the British Consulate for Daniel to pick up his ‘Certificate of No Impediment’ so that he and Ami can have their Civil Wedding on Wednesday. It wasn’t ready! Ten minutes later, the Consulate called to say that it now was!!

2 We met Ami’s lovely parents in town for a ferry trip to Ile la Goree, a beautiful place with a shocking and disturbing history, it being a transit point for slaves to Europe in the 1800’s. It’s a Unesco World Heritage Site and a museum of tremendous importance. The baobab trees had lovely art work for sale attached to them.

3. Pap came into supper with his arms full of traditional outfits for us all and asked that we wear them at dinner that night. Pap, so lovely and thoughtful, also bought presents for KJ and M, our other daughters who couldn’t be with us in Senegal.

Senegal 5th April – Pikine Apartment, Pikine Market and Meeting our Senegalese family

1 Our apartment in Pikine is very close to Ami’s family home, has rooms all opening onto a central courtyard which is smothered in palm trees, huge cacti and beautiful bougainvillea in pinks and reds.

2 Took a yellow taxi to Pikine market – bursting with bustle, noise, colour and smells – to buy fabric for me to have made up into a traditional boubou for the Wedding on Sunday. The most colourful bus took us to the tailor’s where I was measured up and chose a beautiful blue thread to go with the emerald green fabric. It will be ready tomorrow!

3 Met Ami’s lovely family at her home – her parents, her beautiful daughter, Ndeye Marie and some of her aunts and children. We managed to understand each other pretty well with some shared language (French), lots of body language and Daniel on hand to translate from Wolof when necessary. The family has known Daniel for 15 years and spoke of him with pride and warmth and welcomed us into their family. We were able to say how pleased and proud we are to welcome Ami into our family too.

Senegal 4th April – To Dakar, Moving Walkways and Meeting Ami

1 Beautiful balmy breeze met us at almost midnight as we arrived in Dakar, Senegal.

2 I love walking along the moving walkways in the airports especially when the lovely Mr S makes me laugh by walking alongside, apparently at ease, but keeping up all the way.

3 Meeting Ami in person at last, taller and even more beautiful than Skype has allowed us to see. What a handsome and happy pair she and Daniel make. Hugs, kisses and tears (of happiness) all round.

Piano Lesson, Muscari Grandifolium and Speaking Wolof

1 Today’s piano lesson was hard but by the end my confidence was back and I know what to do for next week. My teacher is a star!

2 Just look at this beautiful Muscari Grandifolium flowering today in the wall.

3 We love Skype! Tonight we Skyped with KJ and the children. Jake was telling us about ‘Flat Stanley’, a story our children loved too and Tabitha said her first word, “Hiya!”, while waving at us. Later, we Skyped with Daniel in Barcelona and Ami in Dakar, Senegal, speaking both French and Wolof and talking about the wedding which is only two weeks away. Fabulous evening!
