First House, Pill Creek and An Oak Tree

The first house we lived in when we moved to Cornwall from Birmingham when I was six years old was this amazing place on the side of the creek. We could walk down the path on the terraced garden to the little shingle beach.

The view down Pill Creek was much like this one , taken from the other side of the creek this afternoon when I visited a very old friend and her daughter (whom I used to babysit for 50 years ago!) who are staying in a holiday let.  We had a fabulous catching-up afternoon.

Driving home along Pill Lane, I had to pull over to take this photo of a beautiful gnarled old Oak tree.

Weekly Photo Challenge: My 2012 in Pictures – A Year In Cornwall

These are the photographs that I have had made into a calendar for my family who all live away from Cornwall – in Munich, Germany; in Atlanta, Georgia; in Volcano, Hawaii; in Warsaw, Poland; in Exeter, Devon;  in North Finchley, London; in Barcelona, Spain; in Dakar, Senegal and in Chilla, Devon.

Please click on any photo to reach the enlargement and to read the full caption. I have used the rectangular gallery setting but it won’t put the photos in chronological so I’ve given you them not in a gallery as well. Which do you prefer?

Goethe’s Words, A Poem and A Painting

1   “Every day one should at least hear one little song, read one good poem, see one fine painting and speak a few sensible words” Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe.

I’ve given you the song in Meme’s blog and here’s a poem that I love followed by a fine painting . Goethe’s own words are the sensible ones for today.

2   Don’t Go Far Off by Pablo Neruda

Don’t go far off, not even for a day, because —
because — I don’t know how to say it: a day is long
and I will be waiting for you, as in an empty station
when the trains are parked off somewhere else, asleep.

Don’t leave me, even for an hour, because
then the little drops of anguish will all run together,
the smoke that roams looking for a home will drift
into me, choking my lost heart.

Oh, may your silhouette never dissolve on the beach;
may your eyelids never flutter into the empty distance.
Don’t leave me for a second, my dearest,

because in that moment you’ll have gone so far
I’ll wander mazily over all the earth, asking,
Will you come back? Will you leave me here, dying?

Loe Beach, Pill Creek and A Blazing Sky

1   As a teenager, I used to cycle the 5 miles from Truro to Loe Beach to ‘hang out’ with friends. It is a very beautiful place full of lovely memories.

2  We came to Cornwall from Birmingham when I was 6 years old. Pill Creek was my first real view of Cornwall as we were driven to our first home by an old family friend who had met us at the train station.  I’m sure you’ll understand why I fell in love with Cornwall!

3   The sky as we drove home became more and more golden and was this wonderful colour by the time  we arrived.
