A Poem, An Angel and Peace

What Would You Take? by Serhiy Zhadan

Read by Olha Lemesheva in Truro Cathedral 19 December 2023

People, like snails, wait for the evening
Sleeping so soundly, so deeply in stations
Women who left clean bedsheets back home
Children who cling to their mother’s hand.

What will you take, little snail, from your burning home?
First of all, faith that you will return.
Remember the way the furniture stood;
Hide the keys in your pocket like a dried flower.

This is your road – walked by the voiceless.
Overnight stays between silence and rain.
Be brave, snails, know your worth on this journey.
You’re denied a home – never a heart.

The work of ShelterBox was highlighted throughout the concert and a comment made that  we had all experienced, for a short time, how things can change in a moment. Yes, we went out into the cold – but we could return to the Cathedral after the fire alarm and then to our own homes.

I’ve been sent a photo of one of my recently sold Angels. It’s always good to see them in their new homes.

The need for peace is in all our hearts.

Above All, Be Kind

It’s World Kindness day and don’t we need it everywhere at the moment?

“If you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view, until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.”

Beauty, Snowdrops and Three Wise Monkeys

I was lending some books to a friend yesterday when a marker fell out and I was reminded of a paragraph that I liked very much. Here it is.

Excerpt from Still Life by Sarah Winman

There is beauty in our garden at the moment, lovely Snowdrops, more and more appearing……..

and more Iris Reticulata, this time  in our Three Wise Monkeys planter, made many years ago for me by a local artist,Jeremy  Beswick.

The Writers’ Block Arrives in Redruth

The Writers’ Block has moved to Redruth and is in the old Library, the building now known as The Ladder.  Today was their opening day and lived up to expectations. It really is “an inspirational space with events and activities for all ages and abilities cultivating writing confidence, creativity and enjoyment.”

Allotment – Flowers and Fun

We had a shared lunch at the allotment today – lots of courgettes in evidence! My muffins (recipe to come as soon as I can) were joined by Courgette Fritters and more muffins and some delicious Cinnamon rolls.  I took some photos of a couple of flowers around the plot.

Chatting together we talked about travelling and learning languages and I remembered learning some IsiZulu for our volunteering in Mapoch, near Pretoria when we first retired. I made flash cards to learn with and afterwards wrote a diary of our experiences. Here is the opening paragraph of my diary and some of my flash cards.

Marigolds, Mum and A Poppy

After singing at the eco park this afternoon, this lovely bunch of marigolds in a blue painted trough caught my eye.

My lovely Mum died in 1994 and these words of Tennyson  ring true. She was the gardener who inspired me.

Another gloriously orange flower, one of the Californa Poppies.

Post Box, New Word and Stardust

Knitters and crocheters around Britain make post box toppers to mark all sorts of occasions. I really love this one photographed in Cornwall (not by me) showing the care of Cornwall for Ukraine. .

A new word came my way. I think it’s very descriptive, a word that is ‘ripe for revival!’.

I am enchanted by the thought that each of us is 93% stardust!.
