A Book, An Excerpt and A Cake

Our trains were delayed both going to and returning from London last week so I had many peaceful hours in which to read. This book really caught my imagination and the hours, more than five each way, went by unnoticed as I was completely immersed in Elsa’s story of the dust bowl in Texas and her journey to California.

A very good read!

You may remember a couple of weeks ago I posted about a new recipe which used Pangrattato. It delighted me to read the following description of how to make it as Elsa learned how to do just that.

Excerpt from The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah

We’ll be going to Roots tomorrow and it’s Valentine’s Day this week so I’ve made a cake in the shape of a heart.

Bunting, Donation and Pie

I met a friend for coffee at the lovely cafe at Krowji Creative Hub today and spotted this unusual bunting in the corridor as we left.

Last week I told you about my choir’s donation to ShelterBox. This week we gave a cheque for £1,000 to our local food bank, CPR Foodbank.  Each gig we do, we have out our collection buckets and over the last 12 months, our wonderful audiences have been very generous.

I made a Turkey and Leek pie for tonight, Christmas leftovers that went in the freezer and leeks pulled today from the allotment.

Chocolate Cake and Christmas Crinkle Cookies

Another busy baking day – first a Chocolate Cake with LiveWire No 1 while the smaller ones were at Heartlands’ play park and then making the Crinkle cookies with LiveWires 5 and 6 – a feast tomorrow when friends are coming round for coffee and cake and to meet the family.

Hoolies and Cooking Up a Storm

The weather has been wild, the trees bending to the ground, the lashing rain almost horizontal but we’ve spent the day in the kitchen cooking up a storm, ready for next week when we will be 15 for meals on one day, 12 on three other days and 7 for the rest of the week. In the freezer now are a vegetarian Chilli, a Beef and Chestnut Casserole,  two Sweet Potato and Chestnut Nut Roasts, a Chocolate Torte and a Lime and Ginger Cheesecake. All the makings for a Chicken and Sweetcorn Lasagne are there too and people start arriving on Friday. Happy days – family all together for the first time in four and a half years!

Mixture of chestnuts, cashew and sun-dried tomatoes just before the fried onions and garlic are added to be followed by mashed sweet potato. It’s a scrumptious nut roast!

Fire and A Feast

It was the Christmas get-together at the allotment this evening with a wonderful fire (which will result in biochar for us all to use as a soil enricher ) and a delightful selection of mince pies and mulled wine – a lovely warm evening in every way.

My contribution, Galette Jalousie filled with mincemeat

Sprinkle, Supper and Zimtsterne

On our walk today, there was a bright green sprinkle among the brown leaves. The photo doesn’t show the green except right at the edge so you’ll have to use your imagination.

We planned on making Halloumi Peppers for tea tonight but there was no halloumi. We improvised with cheddar mixed with breadcrumbs, mustard and garlic pepper and it was pleasingly tasty.

I made some delicious meringue topped Cinnamon Stars, Zimtsterne, this afternoon and they are truly delicious. The recipe by Jurgen Krauss was one of the 20 Best Recipes in the Observer  a couple of weeks ago.

Sunlight, Cake Tin and Cake

The sunlight on wet leaves in the front garden lit up so much through the front door that I thought the neighbours had put Christmas fairy lights in their trees already.

I bought a Christmas cake tin many years ago. This is the first time I’ve used it to make a cake for tomorrow’s extra market at the Redruth Switch On Christmas Lights Ceremony.

Angel, Cake and A Letter

I’ve made my first angel of the season and I’m feeling good!

Tonight I’ve made a gluten free Ginger Spiced Honey Cake for the volunteers tomorrow.

I’ve had another brief letter published in The Guardian. Simple pleasures delight me!

Raspberries, Gladiolus and Chocolate Crackle

We are still picking raspberries!

I was also surprised by there being a single white Gladiolus at the allotment.

Blown over but still gorgeous

More chocolate crackle needed tonight after more hours of decorating. Made in minutes , it takes longer to cool than to cook!

Cooling and ready to slice
