Opening Poppy, Runner Beans and Four Siblings

19 May

1  We’ve been watching this poppy and today it began to open.

Early morning poppy

Early afternoon poppy

2   We planted the runner bean plants today. We have no greenhouse so have to wait to buy the little plants and then hope for the best – middle of May is usually okay but does feel a bit risky this year.

Runner beans planted, hopefully to grow up the old pan-stand

3   I love these photos of me and my siblings that our Mum and Dad always had on display.

Four siblings

Hello! 🙂 Your comment on my page, it had me wonder, ‘what are the three beautiful things for you today?’ Poppies are indeed beautiful, but I am curious, are these the kinds of poppies that make opium/heroin, and either way, how CAN a flower make something so “bad” (or perhaps it’s just our use is bad; if we used it only as a painkiller in extreme cases, it would be good). I can’t help wondering about that.

As for the photos of you and your siblings, they are gorgeous in a frame. You know, when my father took my 3 sisters and me in at my age 10 (after getting over his nervous breakdown & being institutionalised, you know, after Mum’s departure), well he took us for a family photo (which not include my eldest sister as she had run away IMMEDIATELY, being 16 and therefore legal to) – but what I’m saying is, that old black & white photo of us, together, in our best clothes – I cannot help but deny, that regardless of what happened between my father and me, he must have loved me at some stage – when I was firstborn & my beautiful Mother was holding me? when we all moved in when I was 10 & he thought things would be good? But his sickness never left, & he was just what he was, and forgot me & my welfare while it all went on.

Oh MY your beautiful things had me think today!!

It is actually lovely to come here & be reminded of three beautiful things every now and then, and to see your smiling gravatar. Thank you, and a big hug! 🙂

    N’n.

I don’t think these are opium poppies but I don’t know! When we lived in the North and we grew purple poppies in the front garden, there would come a point where all the heads would be stolen, before they were seed heads and there was sap pouring out of the stems. That did make us wonder….

That is a very interesting thought you have given me. Foxgloves give me the same thoughts – they are very poisonous but without Digitalis, derived from the foxglove, our Daniel would never have survived his first three years.

I’m sure your father must have loved you – it seems it was his sickness that became all encompassing and for some people, when that happens, it blocks out all others.

I’m delighted that my simple pleasures in beautiful things also give you some pleasure.

      Hugs to you too
      🙂

the poppy is fabulous, they never cease to give enjoyment. I haven’t planted any beans yet – I’m behind! Oh well, hopefully they will catch up 🙂

Given the warmth in your part of the country, they probably will!
Been to the boot sale and bought more plants so out into the garden now – and to see if the poppy has opened further. 🙂

Nothing like an unfolding flower. It always reminds me of the immense need to be open to life and to perceive deeply, which you so obviously are and do. Used your recipe last night, the peppers and Halloumi. It all went so well and they were absolutely delicious. Thank you.

I’m delighted to hear that you enjoyed the Peppers dish.
I’ve never quite thought of an opening flower like that but you are absolutely right, it is a metaphor for a philosophy for life! 🙂

Those poppies are such wonderful flowers. Their petals are so flimsy yet when they die off the seed pod is amazingly robust.
I love your runner beans. I’m going to miss those this year, being in Canada. They don’t grow well where we are because it is so dry. My husband won’t miss them though…… 🙂

You are so right about poppies and the seed pods are beautiful in their own right too.
We both love runner beans, fortunately. We have so little space we can only grow what we both like.:)

Watching a flower unfurl is so beautiful – I love that you appreciate these smaller things in life so much 🙂

I’ll show you when the flower is completely open – hopefully that will be today as we are promised sunshine…..
      Have a good day
      🙂
