I’m lining up creative things to do for my recovery time after my next hip op next week. I have new wool and a whole bunch of pretty ribbons as well as some colourful star shaped buttons for one of my projects.

Truro Cathedral is always beautiful, even in the constant downpour that we have had today.

I grew up in and around Truro and thought I knew the city quite well. True, I knew all the lanes, alleys and short cuts having spent hours roaming or cycling around as a child but today I saw and learned so much more! We went on a guided tour, Truro Now and Then and discovered more than I can possibly tell you about. I will give you a gallery with captions and wish I could remember all the fascinating stories we heard! 1 Truro was lovely on this rather warm December day (11C/50F). We did some shopping, had hot chocolates at Oscar’s, visited the Cathedral and brought pasties home for lunch. Click on any photo for the caption and detail.
2 Arriving home, I discovered one of our lovely friends had called in to bring Christmas wishes as we had had to miss their Winter Solstice party and G also brought me a super collection of DVDs for my recovery time after my operation on 29th December. Such love and kindness are much appreciated. 3 This afternoon, after waving goodbye to four of our family, L and Grand-baby B Skyped and that was just a delight, listening to so many new words. This age of language learning is such magic.

2 We love visiting the Cathedral in Truro for its architecture and the sense of quietude and peace that one feels in such a beautifully simple building. Here is some detail of the front door.

3 I love the simple philosophy of one of our favourite shops in Truro.

1 Today we placed flowers outside Truro Cathedral for two little girls, aged 3 and 4, killed in Gaza a month ago. Oh for peace in that region.
2 I was pleased to see that we can still buy nails by weight and not everything has to be pre-packaged. Two nails, a dozen or a hundred – no problem – just weigh them!

3 In my second favourite shop (my first being any yarn/fabric emporium!) I saw these fabulous individual dinosaur cakes and knew immediately the little people for whom I want to bake them! Not surprisingly, they have sold out but my moulds are on order and as the children have now gone home that’s okay. I can bake them for their next visit.

1 We still had six family people here for Birthday Breakfast which was so lovely – haven’t had offspring here for my birthday for many years.

3 We spent the rest of the day in Truro, visiting the Cathedral, seeing the Peace Tree and reading the stars, watching the ice-skaters behind the Cathedral and shopping. D&A are now cooking up a Senegalese feast for dinner and later we are going back to Truro to hear the Cathedral bells ring in the New Year and to see the fireworks.

In the bookshop, I saw a One Direction calendar – discovered just the other day that an ex-pupil of mine, Louis Tomlinson, is one of the crew! He was a lovely boy then!

1 Whenever we go on holiday, I buy a new angel for the Christmas tree. This one was bought in Kennebunkport, Maine in the Fall.

2 All three of Claire’s choirs joined forces tonight for our Christmas concert in Truro Cathedral. It was fabulous singing in that beautiful space – the sound just rises to the rafters and is so lovely to be a part of.

3 This little girl was rapt. She didn’t move but watched and listened to us all so closely. The lovely Mr S took these photographs of a few beautiful moments.

1 As the aeroplane flew towards the dawn we caught just one shot through the tiny window.

2 That was followed by seeing the most beautiful full moon.

3 And now we are home after our brilliant adventures around New England! Seeing Truro Cathedral from the train always meant that I was almost home and my Mum and Dad would always be at the station ready to take me, not home but to the sea, usually at Perranporth so that we could walk on the sands together, hear the waves and catch up on each other’s lives over the last term… Lovely memories!

I grew up in Truro, Cornwall, and always loved the Cathedral. It seems to grow out of the centre of the city and dominates the skyline. On my birthday, New Year’s Eve, as quite a little girl, I was allowed to stay up to hear the Cathedral bells to ring in the New Year and we used to stand on the doorstep in the dark and listen to the chimes. I just loved this – so much so that when I was exiled in Yorkshire and after all our children had left home, we came to Truro for several New Year holidays just so that I could hear the bells. And now, happily, we have moved back home to Cornwall….. Click on any photo to see more detail.
This is not your usual view of Truro Cathedral but one which caught my eye yesterday. I like the way the trees partly obscure the building and how the light stone of the Cathedral is both caught in the sunlight and framed by the shadowy buildings of the narrow alleyway.
