The Lost Gardens of Heligan – Changing, Poppy Field and Giant

We visited the Lost Gardens of Heligan this morning.  The changing room for babies caught my eye!

Last year, in the gardens, there was a wonderfully moving commemoration of the start of World War 1. You can read about it here.  Thousands of poppies were planted for the event but, as is the way with poppies, they chose their own time to bloom and there were few around last year. This year they have bloomed in their thousands and make for a most moving spectacle. Click your way through the gallery and enjoy them as much as we did.

3   The Giant is always one of our favourites and the Live-Wires all love him. Wish they had been with us today. Here he is for them!

Coffee Cup, Feather and Magpie

1   Having my cup of coffee this morning  I realised that our kitchen light was reflected beautifully in the black coffee. I had to let it cool down before I could take the photo as it kept steaming up!

2   I took so many photos of Redruth this morning for another “My Neighbourhood” post to be done tomorrow. On my way back up the hill I spotted this tiny feather being blown back and forth in the breeze.

3    We’ve had the Long-tail Tits here again today but they don’t hang around to have their pictures taken – neither do the Magpies. They are very skittish and leave if there is any movement in the house. I stayed put in the kitchen, used maximum zoom and managed to get this shot.

This last is for Liz, as promised. I am trying to entice her to visit Heligan!

St Uny Engine House, The Heligan Giant and The Mud Maid

We have had the most beautiful day today! First we had a walk along the Flat Lode Trail to find a tin mine for Jake and this afternoon we went off to The Lost Gardens of Heligan to find the Giant and the Mud Maid.

I’m going to tell it through photos – enjoy! Click on the first one and then click the arrows on the right to get the whole story.

And now they’ve gone home and the house feels very quiet and empty!

First Bluebells, Coloured Pencils and A Baby Naming Ceremony

1  On the lane we take to walk into town, I saw the season’s first bluebells – such a rich colour, ‘like a piece of sky’ as the inspiration for my blog,  http://threebeautifulthings.blogspot.co.uk/ once said.    We also saw some beautifully veined leaves but I have yet to find out what they are.

2    We went into town to find small presents to take to Senegal for Ndeye Marie, the 3 year old daughter of our son’s fiancee – so our soon-to-be  Granddaughter!  We found some bright and chunky coloured pencils and some paper for her and lots of biros for the other children. We know from our Voluntouring in South Africa that such pens are much treasured by the local children.

We have also bought Ndeye Marie  some picture story books, one of which is about The Heligan Giant. See my previous post to see this delightful mud sculpture:  https://mybeautfulthings.wordpress.com/2012/03/28/sally-boots-the-heligan-giant-and-swish/

3   I’ve visited a delightful family in St Erth this evening to talk about their son’s Baby Naming Ceremony. It’s already sounding charming and we’ve hardly started.

Sally-Boots, The Heligan Giant and Swish

1   I finished the Sally-boots for Dan’s new daughter just as he finished our fence. We all feel pleased.

2   Lucy has been working in the Lost Gardens of Heligan helping to restore The Heligan Giant with the sculptors, Sue Hill and her brother, Pete.

3   Went to the Swish at Krowji with Lucy this evening and we both found things we can wear in Senegal. A Swish, for those who don’t know is a clothes swap.
