Women, March Mindfulness and Two Posies

It’s International Women’s Day today and in honour of all women, everywhere, let’s celebrate friendships.A bit of history for you: 1917
“On the last Sunday of February, Russian women began a strike for “bread and peace” in response to the death of over 2 million Russian soldiers in World War 1. Opposed by political leaders, the women continued to strike until four days later the Czar was forced to abdicate and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote. The date the women’s strike commenced was Sunday February 23 on the Julian calendar then in use in Russia. This day on the Gregorian calendar in use elsewhere was March 8.”
To strong women everywhere and as a friend put it today, “to the stoic women of Ukraine who are suffering the ravages of war, those brave women in Russia who protest at Putin’s barbaric behaviour, and  the women of bordering Europe, the UK and the world who have risen up to assist Ukraine. ”

Today is also a special one for our dear neighbour and I have taken a small posy round for her.Somehow I didn’t pass on the Happiness calendar on March 1st. Here it is now!

And while I was picking the primroses and rosemary for S, she was down at the allotment picking some purply stocks for me for International Women’s Day. I’ve put the in my green glass with some white flowers to show the suffragette and I.W.D. colours of purple, white and green.

Flashmob, Birthday Card and A Flower

A call out went out last week:

I was unable to be there but my neighbour made the following short recording which I can share with you: The scratch orchestra in Truro this afternoon playing Mussorgsky’s Great Gate of Kiev and the Ukrainian National Anthem in tribute and solidarity with the Ukrainian people. Thank you, S.

What a delightful birthday card came for the lovely Mr S.

Welsh Cakes, St David’s Day and Street Art

It’s St David’s Day and to celebrate my heritage, I made Welsh Cakes as my Mum used to do. I still have the griddle that I inherited, that Mum used to use on the Aga but, sadly,  it cannot be used on an induction hob.

Sunflowers, Posters and A Song

Sunflowers  are the National Flowers of Ukraine.

This story is being told now in Ukraine and around the world.
. . . Since Russia first unleashed undeserved war on Ukraine this week, remarkably brave elderly Ukrainian women have been watching for invading soldiers on foot in their villages  and are offering each of these (mostly young) Russian soldiers handfuls of Sunflower Seeds ~ saying,
“Here Russian Soldier! Put these sunflower seeds in your pockets so that when you die here in our invaded land more of our beautiful sunflowers will grow where you lie.”
Our town is brightening up all the time and in preparation for St Piran’s Day next week these posters have filled up a wall.
Gary Brooker of Procol Harum died last week. A Whiter Shade of Pale  is an anthem of our time and was written in 1967 the year the lovely Mr S and I were married, just 10 months after meeting. We wanted the piece played for us to walk out after the ceremony but the organist refused!

Peace, Mince pies and Id Needed

by Lisa ?

At last I could make mince pies with the mincemeat I made over a week ago. They were delicious but the pastry was so short that they crumbled as they came out of the pan. Here they are raw.

In my clearing out I have found this little item which we can’t identify. It is only 2″ in length and has KLM impressed on the base. It’s copper on the top and brass underneath. The lovely Mr S had an uncle who worked for the airline so that might explain its provenance. Any thoughts?

Sweet Peas, Seed Pod and Peace Poem

I am delighted with the wall of sweet peas we have grown to hide the shed and potting shelves. The mix  of Sweet Peas, Verbena Bonariensis and Love-in-a-Mist has been delightful, both colourful and scented.

I love how the Crinodendron keeps producing flowers even though there are seeds aplenty all over.

My friend Kim Ridgeon has penned the following beautiful poem. Read it aloud to feel how the carefully crafted words slow you down so that the meaning of the poem is enhanced and peace settles all around you.

Poppies, Peace and A Postcard

These are the words of our Mayor, Deborah Reeve -“Probably one of the most surreal experiences of the last 3 years. On Redruth Station at 5.00am to lay a wreath on the Poppy Train during a pandemic.”     How lovely that GWR are collecting poppies from lots of stations in Cornwall  to take up to London for Armistice Day.

Here’s a Poppy from our garden and a white Poppy for Peace to mark the day.

A beautiful card arrived today from a very lovely and dear friend, expressing her concern about my ankles – a typically kind and lovely thing to do. Thank you, T.

International Peace Day

Usually I would be part of a choir singing as one of many in Truro to mark International Peace Day. Today the peace is to be in my heart and in my wishes for everyone to find peace in these strange and difficult times.  Love to all my Dear Readers.

A Bench, A Bouquet and Peace

For years we have wondered about having somewhere to commemorate my Mum and Dad and have thought that a bench near Gwennap Church where Dad found his inspiration for his best seller, “Jeremy Visick” would be just perfect. The stream that runs by is mentioned in the story too and the place really is special to all the family. Today, with the blessing of the Vicar, we met the Church warden to discuss how this can happen and where to site the bench – just to the right of the one that is there already.  So delighted that this project is finally going to happen. I’ll keep you informed as things progress.

A friend sent a message today to say that in her clearing out she has found some single earrings and can I use them in my glass projects? Yes, I can! I’ve left a little bunch of sweet peas on the doorstep in exchange.

The following words seem right in these strange and discombobulating times. I have posted them before, some four years ago.

Peace

Joyful June, Dragonflies and The Forest

Here is this month’s chart from Action for Happiness. If you’d like a bigger copy here is the link

We spent a lovely, peaceful couple of hours with dear friends this morning by the pond which they have very recently made. The wildlife which has turned up so quickly is remarkable, Water Beetles, Water Boatmen, Dragonflies (who have mated and laid eggs!) and Swallows diving to get a quick drink – so regenerative of lockdown spirits.

Regular readers may remember that just before lockdown we were among a crowd who turned up to help plant 800 young trees. Here is the forest we planted then and the one we helped to plant about 6 years ago.
