Amazing Swim Hats

Words and photos from our lovely neighbour:-   “Perfect morning for the inaugural outing of the Wild Swim Hats – 8.00am, calm sea, light winds, seventeen elated swimmers from the Gorran Haven Coldwater Crew, a film crew in wetsuits, ditto Steve Tanner taking photos, me and Meier Williams, clutching each other, weeping with joy, relief and grief (we both have people we would have LOVED to have shared this moment with). But mostly just gloriously happy to be standing on the edge of the shore witnessing this crazy thing…….”

Ready to swim

Kindness, Tools and Flowers

A friend who reads my blog had read of our disappointment at finding the car-boot sale closed last Sunday. We had been hoping to find tools for the allotment now that we had a shed to keep them in. H knew of a friend  who had a shed full of tool that she needed to clear and so we were, very kindly  offered them. Now we don’t need to take things down with us each time any more and we are very grateful to H for delivering them and to her friend. .

More flower power in the lottie!

Full Moon, Irises and Pink Rhubarb

Last night’s full moon was magical. We’d had cloud cover for most of the day so I was hoping against hope that there might be a break in the clouds as the moon started rising – and there was!  The photo is of the moon rising over our back hedge. It’s called the Pink Moon around the time of April, when the moss pink, or wild ground phlox, is in blossom. The name was used by the Algonquin tribe, as well as by colonial Americans.

I had always thought allotments were for the growing of vegetables and fruit. I hadn’t realised how many flowers there would be all over the place. We have flowers planned for our patch too.

We picked rhubarb today, some from the main plant and some from the forcer which is such a pretty pink. It’s all in the dish here ready for the topping to become Different Every Time Pudding.

Purple, White and Green

Tulips everywhere! This is our Suffragette pot of purple, white and green in a container we rather like.

More tulips! White ones in the wall border.

The trees along the route to Truro are greening up beautifully.

Contrast, Bee and Blossom

We are loving how the tulips are now taking over from the Tete a Tete in the wall border outside the kitchen window.

It’s good to hear the buzzing of bees in the garden.

The evening sun lights up the blossom on our new Amanagowa cherry tree.

Thrift, Wine and Shadows

We set off to the car-boot sale today in the hope of finding duplicate tools for us to keep in our new shed at the allotment. Sadly, despite having checked, they were not open. We were near to Godrevy so walked a different way today to try to find the Thrift that flowers there in profusion. We were a bit early but here is a little of the lovely pink stuff.

For the first time, it was warm enough in the early evening to have a glass of wine in the garden.

The sun threw delicate shadows from the grass onto the slate area where we were sitting.

Allotments, Shed and Hamnet

Our allotments are a delight. There are Forget-me-nots everywhere (and I hope they self seed into our plot for next year) and people are both practical and quirky. I love these beach huts that are just the fronts against the hedge.

The hooley continues. We have secured our little shed which was blown over and the chimney pot, inherited from my Mum, where we stash the bamboo canes.

I wrote about Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell in an earlier post, to be found here, and spent a very happy hour a couple of evenings ago, listening to the author talking about her work and answering readers’ questions in The Guardian Book Club event for April. If you haven’t read this amazing book yet, it is now in paperback and really is one of the best novels I have ever read. .

Sign, Sea and My Mum

We loved the sign at the beach where we went after collecting lots of little plants from Kehelland Horticultural Centre.

The colours of the water were just beautiful, all the lovely shades of blue.

Looking up in a book about herbs today some papers fell out – in my Mum’s handwriting. What a delight and one of ‘those’ moments.  Mum died in 1994 and yet seeing her handwriting can bring her right back into the room where her advice on growing and using herbs is all I need.

Earth Day, A Film and A Mural

Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EarthDay.com including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries.  How better to mark the day than by planting a tree and by tending the earth to raise food for the future?

Meet Me At The Edge is a beautiful film for you. It was to have been a live event on the cliffs at Botallack in Cornwall this time last year but, of course, had to be cancelled. The WildWorks team have put it all together as a film so find yourself an hour and watch this beautiful and moving piece. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d78PwHXQbQI

There’s a lovely new mural in town. Here is the first bit.

Tulip, Raindrops and Supper

The timing has gone somewhat awry for our Suffragette garden – the white tulips have just finished and the gorgeous purple ones have only just opened.

I covered our Broad beans with a mesh after the Jackdaws stole some of them. When we watered this evening the water gathered at each corner and looked very pretty.

A quick, easy and tasty supper this evening – pretty too.

Thai Green Curry with Prawns, Peas, Corn and Sprouting Broccoli (from the garden)
